McKercher on a wing, Sanders in the guts. Reid you could plonk as easily at half back as you could sit him in the goal square for a game.

It would be a long time before all three would be in the same line up anyway.
I give it 6 months, Filthy. From now.

taking 3 more midfielders would be ******* list suicide. I don't care if our midfield isn't the finished product, our spine isn't even a blueprint yet.

Best available with early picks. Always.

And I think our midfield is so far from "set and forget" it's not funny. We had games we were brutalised in there despite our supposed star studded cast.

Let's see our best talented mids actually get on the park for 15+ games a year and the unproven ones step up a level before we consider the midfield a finished product.

These are real concerns. The spine is a way bigger one. Out of the 5 or 6 talls you want to have in a side, we have one A+ lock in Larkey, one very good player in Logue, and a whole lot of doubts. At a certain point you have to spend some draft capital on these positions, since we picked Ben McKay in 2015 the only talls we've taken in the open draft are Xerri who is about as far from a sure thing in his position as a player his age can be, and Comben who I've got high hopes for but needs to prove he can play a full season. I don't know how the club can justify spending that much more draft capital to guarantee that a premium onballer rots on a flank or can't get senior game time at all while 28 year old VFL player Kallan Dawson is essentially guaranteed a game because he's the only key defender on the list. It's just no way to build a team.

From the great and powerful PMBangers:

Re Curtin

I think playing as a 3rd tall in the backline is probably going to be where Curtin finds his feet best, and will likely be one of the main distributors out of the defensive half given his kicking ability. In general I think he's a superb prospect, there's really not much he doesn't do to a high level when given a defined role.

McKercher is a high level accumulator with a damaging kick and good defensive work rate around the ground. He doesn't test super well athletically but seems to have the footy knowledge to use what he does have to his advantage and hurt opposition around stoppages and with his run and carry around the ground, likely starts his career as a winger but shouldn't have any issue moving into centre bounces when he bulks up a bit.

That would have been hard for Bangers too, he’s desperate for McKercher at GWS.

There is not a chance we're going to take Reid, McKercher and Sanders unless we're planning on trading out existing mids (i.e. Thomas, Phillips, Powell) for positions of need. Which is basically to say, not gonna happen.
IMO Reid will not be a mid at AFL level, maybe the occasional burst but that’s it. He’s too good deep forward and behind the ball.

A key defender with a booming left foot again caught the eye during a Coates Talent League quarter-final on the weekend.

Tasmanian Devils defender Arie Schoenmaker was a standout for his side as the minor premiers proved too good for an inaccurate Gippsland Power on Saturday.

A 194cm tall, Schoenmaker racked up 32 disposals, seven marks, three intercept marks, five spoils and four tackles for a total of 205 SuperCoach ranking points.

He took most of the kick-outs for the Devils and also floated forward to boot a long-range goal from outside 50m during the third quarter.

Schoenmaker has been invited to next month’s national draft combine, as one of the top 61 prospects in the country.

He missed 10 weeks at the start of the year due to a suspension for an off-field indiscretion, but returned to feature in two matches for the Allies in the under-18 national championships.

Schoenmaker’s form has also been strong for the Devils since his first game of the year in round 8.

Meanwhile, top-10 draft prospect Ryley Sanders starred for Sandringham Dragons in their quarter-final win over the Northern Knights on Sunday.

Sanders collected 29 disposals, eight clearances, seven marks, 10 score involvements and laid 10 tackles to finish as the game’s No. 1 ranked player with 184 SuperCoach points.

Sanders has been a consistent performer across all of his football programs this year and won the Larke Medal as the best player of the under-18 national championships after starring across his four games for the Allies.

Both Coates Talent League preliminary finals will be played in Bendigo on Sunday, with Tasmania set to face Eastern Ranges and Sandringham Dragons to face off with Geelong Falcons.

We can fit that many mids...

FB: Corr - Phillips/Logue - Archer
HB: Reid - Tomlinson - Sheezel
C: Scott - LDU - McKercher
HF: Simpkin - Comben - Thomas
FF: Zurhaar - Larkey - Curtis
Foll: Xerri - Wardlaw - Phillips
Int: Sanders, Ford, Stephens, Goater
I quite like that hypothetical side. Simpkin hasn’t played that many games where he isn’t on ball so not sure if he’d be productive enough to rotate 50/50 mid/hf.

In your scenario, I’d like to see George in Simpkin’s spot and Simpkin in Phillips. Then it would be out of Powell, Phillips, and Sanders for the ‘last’ midfielder role.

Looks like we might get Fisher so he or Shiels could take Stephens spot as well.

I hope we aren't throwing that Port pick away like it's some insignificant trash just to move up 1 measly spot.
1. Port pick may be eaten by requiring a bid on Sanders.
2. Port pick will end up being around 20 or early 20s. A player around that mark can be great but is just as likely to be a dud.
3. Pick 2 doesn't get you the 2nd best player. Almost every draft board is Reid at 1 and Walter at 2. There isn't a clear consensus on who the 3rd best player is.
4. Reid is the best prospect to come through in a while. He is Victorian. He is a marquee name far bigger than JHF.
5. Just go to the WC board and read how livid they would be if they trade away pick 1, especially for pick 2 and ports pick. The talk was it would require 3 or 4 first rounders to get Reid. If we walk away with pick 1, only having to give up 2 and ports pick, we're laughing.

It's not just moving up 1 measly spot.

Where was Daniel Pratt about 18 years ago ?

The question is why are WC trading it.
1. They want to guarantee they get Curtin as we said we don’t want him or he won’t come to us.. or 2. They can’t pick Reid as he won’t go there..

Can’t we just sit on our hand?

Yeah, George could come in for Phillips and rotate. Or Fisher to HBF and release Sheezel to play forward, then Simpkin in Phillips spot.

They’re trading it because Reid does not want to leave Victoria.

We need to pay a bit for them to trade with us.

They may think that the next few after Reid are pretty close and just be happy with two (or even three) of them and not have the drama of trying to convince Reid to come across and then stay. The Eagles don't lose many but perhaps, given the shitty year they've just had, they don't want to have to deal with JHF 2.0 in 2024.

Maybe AFL has said, look Reid doesn’t want to go to WC but we can’t have another JHF in one or two years, if you offer a fair trade for pick 1 we will let you pre list sanders ect

Any idea what the trade is mate?

Good God! 🎉
No idea.

Great source. Reassured me whole way about clarko.

Bit out of touch and this info was 1 or 2 weeks ago, only saw him today.

Would 💯 explain why we tried to win tho, I'd suggest the sanders bidding came about to stop us from tanking.

I'd imagine it'd be that Port pick and 2. Hence sanders bidding would still be eroded if we had 1. Purely speculation on my behalf but it all adds up.
