Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

I think us not taking Curtain is negligent, there is an elite ready to go key defender sitting there with the exact pick we traded out McKay with.

I like Zane he is a gun, as is Mcarch take one of them but don’t leave an elite key defender slip by when we are giving list spots to SANFL players to fill key defensive gaps.

Surely they wouldn’t. Realise there are some options later in the draft as well and we should take one of them as well.

I can remember the Blues laughing at us for getting Jarrod Waite and look how that turned out. I wouldn't mind having him as another large body forward to help out Larkey especially if the Eagles share his contract.
I might be on the outer with our fanbase but l would've tried like hell to entice Hurn on a 2 yr + coaching to come over and out of retirement (ala Shiels) just for his defensive positioning and leadership knowledge..such a great leader and very underrated as a captain, should have been captain of AA in 2018 and 2019!!

Curtin and Duursma would be perfect, really.

We get a player whose major strength (apart from kicking bags of goals) is contested marking.

We also get a highly footysmart flanker soon-to-be CHB who delivers bullets out of the back half for fun. AND he can run on a wing, go inside or even push forward.

These two help unlock other players to play their natural positions while both being highly versatile.

For those who have seen a lot more footage than I have, giantroo , Souup , roos_fanatic08 , Sphynx etc, given our dearth of small forwards, if we don't go Watson at 2 or 3, what are your thoughts on Jack Delean at one of the picks in the teens?

Looks classy, has the speed, can take hangers, can kick some special goals. Was apparently in the frame as a possible number one pick a few years back and talked about as a potential Isaac Heaney type? Seems to have all the tools to be a dangerous small forward. Not sure on his crumbling ability as the highlights seem to show him more on the lead.

What are yours or anyone's thoughts on him as a possible pick for us? Haven't seen him mentioned too much in this thread so apologies if he has already been talked about.

I think Duursma could potentially play fwd mid or back.

There will be caveats from both sides if we deal 2 and teens pic(s)

ie , “If you take McKercher we will take Curtin” sorta vibes.
Yep and Simpson is good friends with Rawlings, worked under Clarko and is a club legend. I don’t think any party would undermine the other.

Flux capacitor issues could be a concern…

More seriously, he does sound like a good prospect and could come into play if we keep our later first round picks. Personally I’d like us to pick up a ruckman with 17 or 18 (if we still have them).

Not sure I see Curtain as key position (traditional KP type), more of a Lizard, Lukosius type.

Given the impact both of those blokes have on the ground, would be happy to see one of the 2 or 3 pick used to get that.

Not as a direct replacement for McKay though, where someone like Pink seems like a more appropriate fit.

Except if we have to bid on Luke McDonald

I like gothard more than delean, both should be available in our 'need' late first round picks.

ed: Interestingly I think Gothard may be available very late - no one has him on draft boards. Potentially because he moved to footy late, as he was a very good cricketer.

North will offer for pick 1 again. Gut feel is 2 or 3 and 15. I think highest price maybe 2 or 3 and 2 of 15, 17 and 18. Eagles would seriously look at both option.
I still doubt North will enter draft with 5 first rounders.
If 2, 15, 17. I want 23 back.

1, 23 > 2, 15, 17.

NM take 1, 3, 18, 23 in the draft.
WC take 2, 15, 17.

Wasn't Hurn very suseptible to hamstring issues which cause him to retire and was he not playing more than he was playing towards the end of his career?

I like Delean but I don’t think he’ll be a viable option for us. He doesn’t play as a traditional crumbing forward, he is more of a third tall type that relies heavily on his marking to make an impact. Bit too similar to what we already have in my opinion.

I hate the fact that north offered 4 late first round picks for pick one. It indicates to me they are close to doing something stupid. This draft hand could set us up for our next dynasty. Don’t * it up.
All it indicates is that we made an offer, Brady said on Gettable it was a “throw at the stumps”. We are in a very powerful position we have the best draft hand out of all 18 clubs if absolutely nothing happens between now and draft night we pick 5 of the best 18 kids in the draft. We aren‘t desperate to get Reid we know who we’ll take with 2 & 3 if West Coast do want to trade we have the upper hand, we certainly won’t do anything stupid.
