Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

Demattia has stacks of natural talent but he is a little bit like Shaun Atley, sometimes he doesn’t know what to do with his speed. While he is a capable of hitting low bullets he is also prone to torching the footy. He is one that I find really hard to rank.
Curly hair. Pass.

Some say draft the best talent available, whilst l agree with his logic l think for our current list hole, it would negligent of us not to pick top 10 players who are actually in areas that we need to fill.

2. Curtin - Been crying to pick a KPP and now a KPD and here he is, the best KPD in the draft. Flight risk - as much as H.Reid.
3. Watson - Been crying out for a proper small forward/forward pocket player for almost 5 years. Issues over his size is what drives this player.[Note] Would be content if Sanders is picked due to the promises we gave him.
15. Roberts - Modern attacking HB which allow Sheez to move back to his natural posi, Goater can be allowed to develop more than just a HB.
17. M.Edwards - Kid can ruck well, knows how to drop into holes in deep def and can kick goals, will be the understudy to X.
18. A.Reid - Is CCJ the answer to Fwd/Ruck - whatever the case this is a 204cm KPF is athletic, has a dip and can play backup to Chom or CCJ as he develops.

With a midfielder heavy 2024 draft, finishing 17-15 means we still be in the pick 2-4 range the Draper's, Smille's, J.Smith's, O'Sullivans will be on offer. And with Greenwood and Shiels likely to retire plus evidence if Phillips and Powell can cement themselves in the 23, next year's pick for a midfielder is more critical than this year (IMO).
The issue with this approach is, what if Pink is good and Comben going back works. Then RHJ works out. Or we add an experienced player next trade period. Suddenly it would feel stupid to prioritise those spots.

Meanwhile, we're watching Duursma and McKercher dominate.

Needs change so quickly. We shouldn't draft a player for the next 15 years based on the current list.

Just a thought …………..

Its been a loooong year we

  • Lost our coach for 12 weeks
  • Lost our first number 1 draft pick
  • Lost 19 games in a row
  • Lost a game via an interchange infringement
  • Lost to Essendon 2 x under 10 points
  • Lost Chom with another long term injury
  • Lost the number 1 draft pick after losing 19 games in a row
There is more but I reckon you get the point.

After all of this the little reward as supporters we get is to come on here with likeminded supporters are talk shi*t about who we can take at the draft and get a little bit excited about something.

Why everytime I jump on this thread do I have to read these WCE weirdos essays about why we shouldn’t try and trade for Harley, or if we do what we need to pay, or why they don’t want to trade as he is the next G. Ablett.

IT IS TALKING AWAY THE ENJOYMENT OF THE DRAFT BUILD UP!

Please can I request we have a NM only draft thread so we can enjoy our own echo chamber. I cannot take much more and do not want the whole draft period to be about Harley Reid.

Now to bring me some joy I am going to watch some You Tube highlights of the kid who has kicked 76 goals in 30 games at the highest junior level and will almost certainly be wearing blue and white next year.

I wouldn’t worry to much about west coast supporters, they got beaten by 170 points this year and think a kid from country Victoria is going to some how turn the football club around.
Give it twelve months and if they’re copping the same hidings, he’s gone.
Won’t be for some kings ransom either. He’ll pick Geelong or something similar and it’ll be two picks in the teens.

I am not worried they are weirdos and breaking my nerves.

Thats a lot of what if's? Hope that the experiment of a Comben going back is going to somehow work? Hope that an ex-swan/ex-sanfl player is going to hold down KPD when there is a top 5 prospect all year in for the taking? Hope that a mid-season draftee is going to solve the small forward position when there is a top 5 prospect all year in for the taking?

Meanwhile, while we fuddle around experimenting and trying to fit in McKercher and Duursma in a list already stocked at MED/FWD and MID whilst we see 2 top 5 prospects dominate in positions we've cried out for to fill.

The what if works both ways but where did next 15 years come from - who draft's a player looking ahead 15 years? Only Brad ' Kingy said I'm only a visitor here' Scott does, well 9-10 years before he gets the chop.

It sounds like he’s never had any real emotional attachment to North.

It's probably hard to do so considering we shut up shop on our NGA academy when covid hit.

We're still a couple of years away from having a balanced list.

This means we don't need to be in a rush to solve all the holes this draft / trade period.

Drafting for needs today will make us better next year and this may be important to getting positive development from across the group next and even help us sell trading in some new blokes from other teams.

However, if we draft in best available we may end up with a higher ceiling / more talented playing list - especially noting that in the coming years we won't have as much access to the top end.

When you look at GWS their high end draft picks have meant that not only do they get great players on the list to build towards success but when players get shifted out opposition teams are paying more than a third rounder for them. I think this will allow us to trade for players and draft for players in the coming years with more flexibility than we have previously had.

Is Duursma an equal or better forward than Reid?
Is McKercher an equal or better mid than Reid?

Close enough. Better to take our current picks to the draft.

Different types of players. But Duursma’s output as a forward far exceeds Reid. Reid gets thrown around a lot though. Duursma better lead/leap/overhead mark, Reid more contested/physical.

McKercher’s output as a mid far exceeds that of Reid. Again though Reid never really plays as a full time mid. McKercher’s balance between inside/outside game, ability to accumulate and his speed are his biggest points of difference to Reid.
