AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
As Swans supporters we can empathise with a team trying to carve out a community of supporters in an AFL desert, digging in and just hanging on through many lean years. I recall the pride the people of Sydney took in the Swans when they won in 2005. I'd love to see GWS enjoy similar success in a GF.Jumping on the GWS bandwagon, go Giants!

We get how hard it is to attract and hold onto young players, when southern clubs poach talent. They pull on the go-home strings or offer plenty of post-football opportunities to supplement player earnings, with their corporate backers and media interests. The AFL itself gives little while expecting Sydney and GWS to carve out a very lucrative niche for them in a very competitive sporting market.
We feel the resentment of Southern clubs, who bristle at any perceived advantage. So those self-same southern clubs want their own academies - despite the main role of the academies is to build the game in NSW, to every club's advantage. So they get their own academies, despite them already taking their pick of players from Melbourne's private schools and boosting their draft hands with a stream of father-son picks.
We get why a much higher cost of living in Sydney means a footy player's salary buys much less here than in Melbourne or Adelaide. Other jobs cater for large regional variations in costs of livings, why not the AFL?
Following the old adage "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", it's not altogether surprising to see squillions of fans who despise Collingwood clambering aboard the Giant's train. Many of us Swans fans are happy to cheer GWS along their way and even lend our shoulders to the bandwagon.
The only rivalry between GWS and Swans is on the field when we're playing each other. In these prelims, GWS are representing all of NSW and fans from all over the country.
Giants are gonna need a bigger bandwagon

It's a bloody disgrace.Like a 6-day turn around for gws and 8 days for the blooooz
It's a bloody disgrace.
Never said it was a plot, just stupid. Its the 6th time a team has had a 6 day break in the last 8 finals series since the AFL moved away from playing finals on Sundays in 2016, before that 6 days breaks could not be helped from happening.
Most notable incident since was when Collingwood had to play Richmond in a Prelim back in 2018 off a 6 day break because Richmond finished 1st and wanted to play the Friday Night.
We had to play off against Geelong in both 2016 and 2017 off 6 day breaks as Geelong opted for the Friday Night as the higher ranked side both times.
The AFL has been consistent in how the approach this and they have always favored the preference of the higher ranked team.
The only time they weren't consistent we were the team to benefit. In 2012 the Hawks wanted to play the Friday Night Prelim as the higher ranked team but the AFL gave us the slot because Stadium Australia was unavailable on the Saturday due to NRL Finals. That forced Collingwood into a 6 day break as a result and gave us an extra day going into the Grand Final that we didn't earn by ladder position.
So I don't get the fuss at all when its happened before and the AFL is sticking to its normal procedure. As history shows we have been screwed on this and so has Collingwood so its not as if its some plot against GWS, they got unlucky.
Never said it was a plot, just stupid.
In my humble opinion, it would make far more sense to ensure all teams had a minimum 7 day break.
Wouldn't even be bothered if they did. I want to see a Carlton v collingwood granny.Watch the VFL do all they can for a Calton vs Magpies grandfinal.

Can you imagine the knock to their pride if they got knocked off by the blues in a granny... They would retreat to a cave for a long time to come
Why I'm glad we have recruited Edwards 197 and Arnold 194 to go with Melican 194. Have/had hopes to get O'Sullivan 198 or Schoenmaker 194 or ZZ 196. Gould at 192 . Not much use height alone without agility and the other defensive attributes but yeah....As we search for a defender of height to play key position, I just noticed the Giants defence are literally made up of all KPD size players!
Sam Taylor - 198cm
Himmelberg - 195cm
Buckley - 195cm
Idun - 193cm
Ash - 188cm
Cumming - 188cm
We really need to recruit some more height (with speed) in our defence.
Wonder if the smaller quicker forwards for the Pies will get off the leash tonight, eg - Bobby Hill.
Yep we really need to use a high draft pick for a key defender at the draft and develop them. Don’t remember the last time we have actually used a decent draft pick on a KPD. We have turned forwards or even midfielders into defenders. Why I'm glad we have recruited Edwards 197 and Arnold 194 to go with Melican 194. As long as they take Eddie with them. Can you imagine the knock to their pride if they got knocked off by the blues in a granny... They would retreat to a cave for a long time to come
We need height plus the physical skills to develop. Players like Rampe and Phil Davis and even Barrass who play well above their height are super rare. Melican has some of the attributes but not others. Taylor is not a big body but is very skillful to go with his height. I hadn't realised that Idun was that tall.Yep we really need to use a high draft pick for a key defender at the draft and develop them. I'm torn re the height debate. Maybe our current mix is conducive to being able to rebound as well as we do. And it's not like we've struggled defensively. Quite the opposite actually, have held up quite well despite the amount of inside 50s we concede. We need height plus the physical skills to develop. I was hopeful that we would get McKay for next year and could have he and McCartin as pillars with Melican or Francis or Arnold as third tall to allow Blakey to run off. I think having all of Lloyd and Cunningham and Rampe and Fox places a burden on our defence and limits our options. Each of them has significant value but together they are too small. I would keep Cunningham and Rampe and bring in the best of the others.
McCartin, Melican, Francis, Blakey, Rampe, Cunningham then probably Arnold but pretty sure Horse would use Lloyd.
The 4 best defences conceded in the 1600's for the season. We conceded 1863. We scored 2050 which gave us our %. Your point about rebound is good as a lot of our scoring started from defence. I think there's a job there for the coaches to improve one without weakening the other.I'm torn re the height debate. Maybe our current mix is conducive to being able to rebound as well as we do.
