Doing solo laps like he always does. How did Fagan look during training? Did he participate in the running drills?
C’mon, he’s got the Ron Grant shuffle down pat.He is more of a walker.
If this is the case it is quite bizarre after the smashing we took in contested ball this year. Footy's changed a lot but it hasn't changed that much. Also our tackling last year (sans K Coleman and D Robertson) was mostly very poor and I can't see this aiding us on that front. One thing I think I have noticed, is that a most of the boys appear to have leaned out a bit, dropped some of the muscle.
This makes sense but the game is still built on the contest. This is a bit like building a house and making sure the walls are solid. If the foundation is rubbish it won't matter how sound the walls are.Probably in response to the "team defence" that we will be focusing on this season. Increased endurance, increased running means they probably need to drop some muscle so as to not fatigue earlier.
This is so good. Thanks heaps for the detail. Definitely need to work on team defence so hopefully a step in the right directionBoys put in a sold session for the last one of the year, at least 2.5hrs on the track. Most ran around the 12k mark (was standing close to the fella keeping an eye on their running) doing mostly drills rather than just running as such.
Towards the end of the session they did a fantastic drill with 3 groups of 12 designed specifically for defensive running and defensive transition.
It was a full ground drill where 2 of the groups (one with the ball and one without would move the ball from kick in towards the other goal. If the ball went out of bounds or the ball was turned over the defending team would sit out and the attacking team would then have to transition into defense, the team who sat out that first drill would already be set up for a kickin on the other side of the field and would start their attacking chain, it was all designed for the other team to have to gut run to the other side of the ground to stop or slow down their ball movement.
It was a great drill that they just ran over and over. They ran 3 sets where it was run continually over about an 6-8 minute period for each set with a couple of minutes spell in between each set.
It was a drill I had never seen before but I thought it was a great little drill.
All of the boys look magnificent, and as briztoon said last week they all appear to have slimmed down significantly with defensive running font of mind in that respect.
Both Zorko and Rich are 2 that appear to have leaned out the most, Zorko in particular is looking in the best shape I have seen him since probably the 2019 season.
Daniher, McCarthy, Answerth, Rich, Lyons, Brain and Oscar were doing mostly running drills along the side line. Rich is running really well for him.
Gardiner, Berry, Michael did very little with some work off the ground on the bikes.
Lachie Neale didn’t appear to be there at all.
Dev did nothing after a solid hit from Oscar on Wednesday, he has a decent set of stitches above his left eye and some decent swelling on that side of his face, hope he heals ok or my daughter will be devastated
Shadeau Brain appears to be a bit of a natural in front of goal.
Jack Gunston just doesn’t miss.
Glad I went along because it was a really good hard session before the break and they were heading to the gym afterwards.
If anyone has any question I will try my best to answer.
Anyone else loving how much we’re being underrated again despite being a prelim team with one of the best off seasons in recent memory?
I’m not complaining just to be clear, I’d love to be flying under the radar. But it’s pretty funny still
The way I see it is that they just want to see a clear shift in workrate when we don’t have the ball, which was specifically what that drill was designed for. We've always been an on-ball pressure team moreso than a defensive structure team. All of the above represents a clear shift in that balance. While it's true the balance needed to shift, whether it's gone too far remains to be seen. Over-balance on pressure and you get opened up on the counter like we did in 2022, but over-balance on defensive structure and all of a sudden you can't move the ball when you get it. While I never saw any of their games live in person this felt like a problem Ross Lyon's and Nathan Buckley's teams always had.
Are we? I don’t think we’re being underrated at all. Everything I’ve seen has us as either premiership favourite or close to.
I only follow the Vic media during footy season but I have sneaky suspicion that Carlton are very much going to be the darling child that they will be falling all over themselves to hype up. Thats just my gut feel and it already feels nauseating thinking about.Of all the Herald Sun ‘crystal ball’ experts only one (from memory) had us playing in the GF (against Melbourne IIRC). A couple had Carlton playing in the GF (would very much surprise me), a few had Sydney (can see them falling well short next year), and Collingwood were in there 2 or 3 times.
I like it that the "media experts" dont rate us...it allows us to get on with the job without any unnecessary/additional white noise from the media grubs.Of all the Herald Sun ‘crystal ball’ experts only one (from memory) had us playing in the GF (against Melbourne IIRC). I think it's quite hard to rate us coming into next season. We have a great squad, with 30+ players best 22 capable. I think we're pretty strong across all lines. We've traded and drafted superbly to put ourselves in the best possible position to take a flag. Expectations are more than warranted.I like it that the "media experts" dont rate us...it allows us to get on with the job without any unnecessary/additional white noise from the media grubs.
I agree with everything you mention above however, in my opinion, there is no club to ever win a grand final without some good luck. The old saying of "you make your own luck" isn't totally accurate when it comes to injury. Adding Dunkley and Ashcroft (in my opinion) have been the missing pieces in our puzzle that has really let us down when we needed. BIG TICK.I think it's quite hard to rate us coming into next season. However we do have some vulnerabilities. Firstly, our team defense needs to improve greatly. I think we took some steps towards that in the finals. Dev made a difference replacing Lyons. A full preseason working on it will pay dividends. Players have always been all in on continued improvement so I can't see that area not stepping up.
How Daniher, Berry recover from shoulder surgery, Lyons from groin surgery and Adams from concussion is important to the season. We need these blokes fit, pain free and with full mobility. There's probably others I've missed that have had off-season surgeries that need to recover positively as well.
I also think we're vulnerable to injury in a cpl of areas. Tall defenders is one. If Adams keeps having concussion problems and we get injuries to Andrews and Payne or Gardiner we're in a bit of strife. Tall fwds is the other area. We saw when we lost Hippy, then Mcstay in the finals a cpl of yrs ago. Fullerton came in, Payne went fwd but got injured early in the game he played, we were left wanting. Sure we have Fort now n can play an extra ruck, but a quality genuine goal kicking Tall fwd we don't have waiting in the wings.
I am very bullish on our season tho. I think we will improve our team defense greatly. Good recovery and another excellent year from our medical and strengthening staff will put us up there again. I expect us to be one of the top 3 teams of the season, and strong performers in the finals. Anything can happen. Can't wait for it to start.
Just want to say that even though I (and others) at times don't agree with everything you post, I very much appreciate the insight you give us from behind closed doors and look forward to it continuing in 2023. Cheers!I agree with everything you mention above however, in my opinion, there is no club to ever win a grand final without some good luck. There's been a lot of noise about team defense here and in the media. I can assure you that team defense and several other weakness's are a focus and we will be better in a lot of areas of our game come round 1. (as will other clubs with their weakness's)
Our team balance has never been better. Payne has the versatility to go forward or back along with Fullerton if needed. Gunston easily plays a key forward role & like you say, Fort can slot into a forward position as well. Losing a key forward or back is a problem for all clubs not just ours so that comes down to a little good luck with injury but in saying that I believe we have replacements should that occur. Berry will be cherry ripe come round 1 and so will Joey & Dizzy. Marcus is still work in progress but everything is being done to get him right for 2023. McKenna is a great get along with Jaspa who might take a bit of time but his upside is exciting. That and the natural incremental improvement from our young and already established players will make us pretty strong.
In my small involvement with the club, I have never seen this club so up and about for a season. The vibe from everyone (Admin, Management, Coach's, Players) is different to any other time and I believe we are in a window of real opportunity for the next 2-3 years. Very Exciting.
Funnily enough I was talking to someone who just happens to be a family member of Lyons.
Was told his OP wasn’t great at all but the lions kept playing him when he clearly wasn’t fit & ran him into the ground.
Got to the point where Lyons old man was pretty angry about it & told Lyons he needed to stand up to the club/Medical staff & tell them enough was enough. Sounds like they where not that stoked about the mis-management by the club.
Had this posted to me today.
Watching Lyons in the VFL semi final, and I really had to question what was the point of him being out there, and who decided he could play.Spoke to a player sponsor at the prelim who mentioned that Lyons said to him he didn’t know how much longer he could play on as his OP was that bad.
This was said to him after a Melbourne game around mid season.
