Training 2023 Pre-season thread

I was listening to an interview Dayne Zorko did last week, (IIRC on SEN) he was saying he is currently weighing in at 73kg as compared to last seasons playing weight of 80kg. Said he feels physically as good as he has in his whole career... he is aiming to be back to around 77-78kg when the season proper kicks off.

Zorks at his best is an elite player of the competition, fingers crossed his body holds up right through to the last Saturday in September.

irel I think this is all the VFL boys who took part...

48 - Tahj Abberley
49 - Bruce Reville
52 - Kyle Dunkley
53 - Riley Greene
54 - Wilson Barry
55 - Jackson Hille
56 - Zack Derksen
57 - Locky Rayner
59 - Wylie Buzza
60 - Harry Arnold

I guessed 53 must be Riley without knowing. There was a clip in instagram or facebook where 53 followed Charlie towards a pack and takes off for a spoil. Got a strong leap on him, that kid.

Is this based on direct discussions with said coaches or your own opinions of their thoughts? My opinion is that Dev is a valuable asset.

Yes I agree he is a valuable asset and I would be surprised if the club didn’t have a similar view. I think the club would have him high on the list of out of contract players to re sign, but won’t sell the farm to keep him.

Maybe not the whole farm but I would certainly sell off the back 100 acres to keep him.

Will be interested to see if Dev Robertson resigns with the Lions.
He only played 7 games in 2022 plus 1 as an unused sub. That is less than half the games he played in 2021.
We have added Dunkley and Ashcroft both will move in front of him. Also, a fit Lyons is also in front of him.
I would like to find a spot for him but barring injuries it will be a hard task.
I see wing as a possibility, but they are playing him pure midfield so far in the match sims.
His manager will talk to Dev about what he wants and maybe put out some feelers to other clubs.
The problem with Dev is he probably won't find a club willing to pay him much more than what the Lions would offer.
This could change if he gets to play 16 + games again as in 2021.

Same base wage, but with a full season of match payments would be a nice boost.

Pretty sure West Coast would still be interested for a third round pick.

I reckon we'll go through a bit of churn in the 3-4 year player group. Except for Zorko and Rich, rest of the spots have players who can be there medium to long term. We have a surplus of small defenders in Starcevich, Coleman, Wilmot, McKenna, Answerth, Madden some of whom could be moved to roles playing further up the field. It might mean we'll lose Dev, Sharp and so on.

Depth is likely to come from Prior, Lohmann, Fletcher, Tunstill, Ah Chee and Lyons possibly.

I’d rather lose Answerth and Madden, than lose Dev.

Obviously not having any ideas of potential trade targets at the end of the season, I’m hoping for minimal list turnover this year, as we still have a lot of young talent yet to reach their potential.

Plus our current draft hand is pants.

My opinion of the situation, my previous comment about Voss, first games he didn’t set the world on fire but the coaches could see what he would be. With Dev I thought he would be a star and would have played him every game. The coaches have a different view, hopefully they see a different path to his full development.

Robertson I think would already have offers from a few clubs for 2024.He’s the perfect poach. We might lose a couple of players at the end of this season we’d rather keep but just can’t fit in.

Not a big fan of Answerth but from a depth player perspective he'll be a good fit similar to how Mathieson has been going for last couple of years for us. Same with Madden, he has the tools and just needs a consistent run in my view. The way our list changes and player retention pans out means Madden could get more opportunity. We could retain both of them without much fuss.

Mature bodies, know our game plan and can do a job when needed. Perfect depth for our premiership window.

With regards Dev, the coaches view him differently than me, I think he will be a star, the coaches aren’t so sure
agree, and cannot blame him if he leaves at the end of this season. Thought he might have requested a trade last year but i was wrong. Doing the right thing and seeing out his contract with the Lions. I hope he gets a run at it this year, but I suppose if Lyons is fit then coaches probably rate him higher.

Yes and out of those three Answerth is capable of playing in more positions, he may just be the replacement allrounder Lester has been for us.
