Thinking Gunston might be one of the underrated pickups of the season. Still has plenty to give and will change the way our forward line moves for the better imo. Almost felt like he was a replacement for McStay but he’s a pretty clear upgrade.

He is just a smart footballer with a real footy brain.

Lights on

2:00 scrappy start to the quarter but after a rushed snap by McKenna goes into the pocket, Sharp is there to handball to Ashcroft in the goal square 88-100. Gunston roving his own dropped contested mark a feature of the build up.
4:00 Gunston marks a short Wilmot kick on 50. Handballs to Rich who nails it from 50 on the run. 94-100
6:00 Prior running between centre and the wing finds Gunston inside 50. He nails his set shot from 35. The longer this goes the better Jack looks. 100-100
7:00 Tunstill gives away a high tackle free kick inside 50. Red 48 misses badly to the left from 40 but red lead 100-101
8:30 tackle of the day from Joe. Had one arm pinned but not the ball, didn't drive him into the ground; no need. Clear holding the ball free kick. Everybody else take note. Too far out to score by the way
10:00 after a slow build up Neale spots McKenna in a ****teenth of space. He marks and shapes to shoot but it's the old look away kick to Gunston who marks 30 out directly in front. Kicks truly again 106-101. Smart by McKenna - in a real game that's another 30 seconds off the clock as well
13:00 thrilling build up after a throw in deep in red's forward pocket. All the forwards get involved across midfield before Ashcroft marks in space 40 out. Proves he's human tho by dragging it left 107-101
18:00ish Big O outmarks Andrews on the behind line. Put around on the impossible angle he nails it. 107-107 but the game has officially reached "cue in the rack" territory. So much so that the time clock is now showing sponsors instead of the time
22:00ish Ashcroft wins a free kick for what I think was high contact. From 40 out in the pocket he goes the right foot snap and slots it. Missed the easy one, kicks the hard one. 113-107
23:00ish just noticed Gunston has been moved into defence with maroon hanging onto a slender lead. Maroon now content to play a bit of kick-mark between wing and half back. Gunston has assumed the quarterback role.
25:00ish brilliant snapped goal from Ashcroft from 45 under considerable pressure as the buzzer sounds 119-107

I'm hopeless at giving votes but I'll do my best

3 Gunston. I'd probably give him the 2 and the 1 if I could
2 Hipwood. Was good early
1 Ashcroft. That last goal gets him the 1. Quite brilliant

McCarthy probly 4th. Others will probably have very different votes and I'd trust their thoughts over mine!

Seems McKenna got involved in quite a few scoring chains. Would you say he is looking likely to be best 22 at this stage?

Both he and Wilmot both looked very good for the A team.
So did Rayner actually, although Rayners ball use wasn’t the best.

Equatorial heat and humidity for the Match Sim today. Up there with anything I have felt in Vietnam,PNG or SriLanka. I felt for the players. A good hit out which was a bit scrappy at times but kudos for playing in those conditions. Rich fell hard on his right leg in Q1 and limped to the bench. My fear of a season ending injury was misplaced as he came back after 10 mins and played out the game.

Best in my opinion
Neale,Ashcroft,Dunkley,Bailey,Gunston,Starc,Hippy. Special mentions Tunners,Sharpie,DarcyW,Mckenna Linc.
For possibles.
Fullarton ,AhChee,Darcy Fort. Cam Rayners bro,54

A good hit out with most players doing well. Joey and Charlie a bit starved but had highlights as did Harris but Fullarton bested him a few times. Good improvement evident with him. Overall the highlight for me was Ashcroft. The kid is something special. Finds the ball, thinks two moves ahead of most can take a hit has excellent skills and is going to be a joy to watch for years to come. Walk up start best 22. At least the equal of Carltons Walsh.

Gunston will be your most impacted pick up I believe. He still has so much in the tank and with the midfield you have and the tall forwards next to him, I expect him to have a huge year. If he stays healthy it would not surprise me to see him being in the running for the Coleman.

Good luck this year, your list management has done a tremendous job.
Hoping you guys win it all for Fages

Been trying to think of our top 10 most important players

1. Neale - contested ball beast, good user
2. Kiddy - creativity and skill, sets up more goals than anyone else
3. McCluggage - great last kick inside 50
4. Andrews - shutdown/interceptor
5. Daniher - straighten us up
6. Dunkley - contested ball beast, defensive pressure
7. Starcevich - always gets big roles
8. Cameron - drags defenders, strong 1 on 1
9. Hipwood - linking up the play
10. Bailey - creativity and finishing under pressure

Not sure if it is the influence of Jack Gunston in the forward line but there seems to be a real focus on shorter kicks into the forward line to a leading player.
Could also be that they are playing a VFL team with a lot of top ups

Ideally it’s something they’ve focussed on. I felt a large part of our iffy f50 entries last year were down to forwards not leading. We’d mark the ball down the wing, the player would look up to move it on quick - but forwards never led with initiative; causing the play to slow down and the opposition to set up.

Yeah kind of. I saw it a little differently I must admit, attending every game and where possible trying to sit up high behind the goals.

To me the major flaws of our forwards were (a) they would lead too soon, ie before the ball carrier had been able to get far enough back behind the man on the mark, or worse, while he still has his back turned.

The other thing (b) was that our forwards, all of them, generally only ever led for themselves. Charlie was quiet today but I loved seeing today in the 2nd quarter, he led up towards the ball carrier who was just behind the wing. It was pointless for him to receive the ball where he was, but the thing was he dragged a man with him and opened up space behind him for I think Eric to lead and mark.

So I really liked that from Charlie; he knew he wouldn't get the ball where he was leading to but recognised that wasn't the point of his lead. Good, mature play, and can't help that perhaps Gunston has helped play a small part in that shift in attitude.

Perhaps also though (b) comes back to your point, in that if they didn't think they were going to get the ball, they wouldn't lead at all, which is not the attitude we want. The very least a lead does, even a bad one, is it challenges one or more defenders to make a decision. And it only takes one wrong decision to create a bit of chaos, and that's how you create scoring opportunities.
