As the sheet said, injuries to best 22 players.

I don’t believe Dev would be counted as a best 22 player.

Hippy, Daniher, Coleman, Lyons all should have been.

I don’t know who they would have counted as our second winger. Probably Mitch Robertson, and my guess is they would not have counted games missed by players being dropped or rested.
Yes, pretty obvious in the heading.
I have made a couple of errors today.
Can't even blame the grog as i don't drink.

Seeing we are talking about injuries i found this article quite interesting.
....................................

If injury payments still go beyond the rebate, the list manager must then negotiate with a player or players’ agent to defer some of their wage into the following season’s salary cap – and continue the financial headache. Typically, the contract variation will involve a footballer on significant fixed money.

This scenario is one of the reasons why back-ended contracts have become so prevalent in the AFL.

Key points

The AFL’s injury allowance has gone from an average of $563,000 to $250,000 this year.

Clubs spending close to the salary cap limit could come under pressure if they suffer mass injuries.

List managers send a total player payments estimation to league headquarters before each season.

I post about this every year so here we go, this is a Lions 25 and under side, all these players if good enough and barring major injury concerns should still be playing at the end of the decade. - The future looks bright.

Noah Answerth, Darragh Joyce, Brandon Starcevich.
Darcy Wilmot, Jack Payne, Keidean Coleman.

Henry Smith, Will Ashcroft, Jarrod Berry.
Hugh McCluggage, Dev Robertson, James Tunstill.

Cam Rayner, Tom Fullarton, Kai Lohmann.
Zac Bailey, Eric Hipwood, Callum Ah Chee.

Jaspa Fletcher, Blake Coleman, Harry Sharp, Kalin Lane, Carter Michael, Jaxon Prior, James Madden.

Great post Jason. The list management & recruiting team probably have a far more complex job than we imagine.

On one hand it's all about the now. What do we need to do to get the silverware. On the other hand, they look at that list & say, what holes do we need to plug in 5 to 7 years. Key forwards & backs are hard to trade in so no guarantees you will be able to.

Was lucky enough to attend a thank you hosted by the Lions last night at Springfield for volunteers at local footy clubs. The players who were at the Community Camp that afternoon came up for an hour to have a chat with us. First up let me say that as supporters we should be enormously proud of the players for the humble way they go about things and the way they engaged with everyone. No one was on their phone scrolling through their socials or reading texts etc. First guy into the room was Cam and he just made a bee line to the table where my mate and I were and if he isn't one of the happiest people alive then I am a poor judge. He stayed and chatted with us for about 20 minutes - excited about the year ahead and I said to him that he looked in fantastic nick- said it was the first proper pre-season post the ACL. Chatted a bit about playing in the back line in the intra-club.
Next chat was with Shadeau Brain and for a guy who has only just lobbed at an AFL club he was great to talk to - mentioned to him that we had been to a pre-season meet the players at Brendale possibly in Fage's second year and that the first question that Fages asked us was "how were the players - were they respectful". He said that Fages still asks that question just about every time they get together - are you staying grounded. On to Will next - I actually worked with his grandfather on his mums side at Westpac years ago - had a chat about that. Said he is enjoying living in Brisbane - never lived here before only the Gold Coast. No problem with the commute (in fact that was the message from all the players I spoke to) just sticks on a podcast and develops his brain a bit more. Says he is loving playing in the midfield group with Lachie and Josh. Caught up with Hugh, my goodness what an impressive guy. We spoke about his trip to Nepal, the season ahead and how genuinely excited he is about Will and Jack Gunston. Had a laugh at the photo of Hippy on Instagram when he was a young fella - mentioned that the club had tried everything to get size into him but that just looks to be his genetic disposition. One thing that he did say that no one really likes playing on him because he is so mobile and all arms and legs and if you try to play him close you are liable to cop a stray elbow.
Caught up then with Carter Michael - again just a really impressive guy who is under no illusions about hard he is going to have to work to get a run but he is certainly up for it. Quick chat to Lachie as it was getting towards the end of the night. Steely determination there to go the extra couple of steps and is excited about what he sees in Will.
Next up was Dizzy - didn't realise he is so tall! At that stage of his career where he says the pre-season is a bit of a grind but he thinks the payoff will be worth it - again just a really down to earth person.
Last person I got to was Oscar - what a legend! Spoke about the midfield group and his smile was like a split watermelon "mate I am now spoiled for choices for the centre square bounces and around the ground hit outs.
Big thanks to all of them for making themselves available - would have been a long day for them but they all had a smile on their face and more than willing to have a chat to anyone that came up to them,
Thanks for that SH. Great to hear.

I feel like our off season additions are going to push us over the edge in terms of talent and propel us from a very good team to a great one.

Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, Andrews, Cameron, Daniher, Gunston, Starcevich, Bailey, Hipwood, Coleman. That’s a group of 11 players who are either AA or have the potential and strong likelihood of being AA in my opinion. Not to mention we still have Zorko and Rich on the list as well.

On top of this Ashcroft looks like a prodigy, we have a strong ruck in McInerney, Berry, Rayner and McCarthy can all be match winners on their day(Berry’s semi final against Demons, Rayner v Saints at Marvel last year, McCarthy on several occasions since joining the club). We will likely see McKenna or Wilmot settle into our back 6 as well and add pace and x-factor to the side.

The depth of guys like Lyons, Ah Chee, Answerth, Mathieson, Fullarton, Lester and Cockatoo who can all come in any given week and play their role effectively is a major plus as well. We also have young players with major potential such as Payne, Dev, Lohmann, Tunstill, Prior and Fletcher all either best 22 or on the brink.

Fagan and Co. have been building strong foundations at this club on and off field since 2017 and I feel we are now in the prime position to take full advantage. We simply have to make the grand final this year and I believe we are as good a shot as any to win the flag.

I think a forward line consisting of Daniher, Hipwood, Gunston, Cameron, Bailey and Rayner could score 150+ points against a team this year and assert a dominance akin to great teams of the past like the Lions in 2003 or Cats in 2007. Particularly with a midfield of Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage and Ashcroft getting it to them.

Below article also mentions Payne and Lyons
  • while Jack Payne has also missed time after having his tonsils removed.
  • Jarrod Lyons to play on Friday

The number of names in there at this stage of the year are concerning, especially given what we understand these days about the correlation between how much of preseason you miss and how much that affects your in-season performance.

But to me this simply emphasises the view I think commonly shared on here that we should be pretty liberal with our resting of non-fully-fit players right the way through the season (at least until finals). Almost to the point of adopting a revolving door policy at selection. With the 3rd oldest list in the comp now, regular niggles etc are to be expected, unfortunately.

Looking on the positive side, we may need to throw a young bloke in the deep end in a preliminary final. But if he's played the role in the AFL team at some stage during the season that could make all the difference.

dont think ive seen anyone place lyons in their b22 in the thread we have on here

will be interesting to see what the coaches think if lyons is fully fit and available come round 1

If 100% fit he will add value to the team but if not and if he is still labouring we can’t afford to play him, simples. Because ultimately you only need one to be off the pace and your team defence falls down.
Mighty Lions has said on many occasions that he think Lyons will be in the team.

Reading between the lines from that article.

Payne must have picked up some sort of problem after his tonsils were removed.
It was mentioned he needs to put on some weight and regain strength before playing the Swans.

Ainswerth back against the Cats. We usually name close to our best 22 for that only official game.
Could mean he is still in front Wilmot and McKenna or they just need to give him a game.

I believe those Pre-season games they allow you to go in with an extended bench so it may not mean much at all really.
But we know that Fages loves him and I would think that he is still more in line for a wing position rather than at half back or he may rotate between the 2.
So either McKenna or Wilmot or both will likely still play in that game

In my best 22/23 i named Dev Robertson.
However, on all occasions i had a proviso that if Lyons is fully fit he replaces Dev.
Mighty Lions also had him in and possibly some others.
The jury is still out on Lyons until we see what he can produce in the next month.
Jarrod was one of the better midfielders in the competition in 2021 and playing well until his injury in 2022.

The Swans game but not the Cats game. EDIT: Looked at last years team v Dogs and their were 7 on the bench. Wrong again
Everyone will have the TS so that will be used in an official preseason game.
One proviso is the heat rule, but our Cats game is at night.

The first half of 2021, particularly when Lachie was out with injury he was well up there as one of the best mids in the comp.

Me too, got our free tickets, going to get the train there, have to train it into town then grab another train out to Springfield, it'll be a late night by the time we get back home.

With Zorkos hamstrings gone I can't see him offering much. Skills were shocking for a lot of last year. Hopefully he can cover the ground a bit better

I think we'll be hiding him for most of the year again with short bursts in the midfield

Zorks has had a couple of little Hamstring niggles over the last couple of years, but they have never really kept him out for long.
As long as he is over the calf and Achilles issues then I can’t see why he can’t have his most productive season since 2019.
If most of us on here had our way though, he would likely be rested on occasions this year. And maybe play a maximum of 20-22 games throughout the year including the finals.

I think not training/playing was the issue with his form early last season. As well as being played out of position. Had a terrible feel for the game

Unfortunately without speed or skills he doesn't offer much

Training/fitness has not been an issue for him so far this pre-season.
Lighter duties for 2 weeks is not likely to do much damage to his chances for a solid season.
If he continues to have little set backs then it will become a problem.

Its really up to the other players in the group to demand selection ahead of him and also command the captaincy to my mind. I presume this is happening organically but if it isnt I dont see why knock Zorks, current Captains been managed nothing more to it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there is no parking in the club car parks.
No. 1 and 2 carparks likely closed like it was for the AFLW GF.
The big carpark No. 3 should be open as it is also used for Park & Ride people at present.
Not many use it but the sign was still their the last time i visited.
