According to Fages' presser before the game he's at a wedding today.

Acceptable excuse

Thanks for the writeup. Interesting that JL is in the twos, also interesting that we got smashed at stoppages. Do you have any idea why that might be based on what you saw?

Also how did Ashcroft go in the middle?

Ashcroft was good, particularly early. Probably best on ground for say the first quarter and a half. Maybe faded a bit towards the end.

I just think our midfield gets forward of the ball too often and too quickly. I've been saying this since mid 2021 but everyone shouts me down because criticism of our Brownlow medallist is completely off limits. But our defence will be the foundation of any success we have and it has to start at the coal face.

Today looked just like pretty much any game you want to look at last year, where we'd spend large portions of the game groaning about how we were playing, even when we got the result.

Also I'd suggest we went with one tall too many, which I acknowledge is a change in my perspective since 2021, when I thought we should load up with tall guys. 3 key forwards and 2 ruckmen. I now concede that is at least one too many and possibly even two too many.

Great stuff with the match sim reports Grasshopper17 , interested in who you think was more impressive today McKenna or Wilmot?
Probably McKenna on balance. They looked to both be playing in more wing-style roles than off half back. Rayner played in defence again and was solid without being spectacular, but also without the glaring skill errors that plagued his game last week.

You’re not the only one who’s been saying it.

In the few games I went to last season, it was very noticeable.

I can only imagine that it’s a coaching instruction, even though I’m sure I’ve heard Fagan talk about it being an issue he wanted to address.

Who here doesn’t think our midfield doesn’t run hard enough defensively?

You get some slack when you win 20 contested possessions and 10 clearances a game

Only other thing I'd add from a coaching perspective is that, once again, I still don't think we have brought anything new to the table with regards to style of play, either with or without the ball.

Every year (basically) the team that wins the premiership does so by doing something no other club is doing or knows how to combat. We still look to be playing copycat footy, with no real innovation outside of trying players in different positions.

This means we are essentially gambling on the talent on our list to get us over the line, which in this era of draft and salary cap is fraught with danger.

See, no. If our footy team is a house it's the 3 story mansion with the Porsche, the tennis court and the infinity pool on the roof. It looks fantastic in the photos. But it's built on a fault line and the foundations are rotten.

No use getting 20 contested possessions and 10 clearances if your man is getting even more or being more damaging because we won't give him any attention.

Just home from the game. Stayed a little longer to suss out some other parking options for the Cats game.
I was told by a Lions staff member that the Cats game is sold out. However, they may release more tickets.

Fagan was at the game.
I took some photos, so as usual i can't comment objectively on how certain players went overall.
A few things i noticed.
Fullarton finally played the whole game in defense but for the twos. Went okay but they got thrashed.
Joyce was in the ones but not sure if he stayed there all day.
Willmot wing for the 2nd half in the ones.
Ah Chee also mover to wing for the 2nd half.

Andrews kept mopping up all day except once in front of me on the boundary.
He actually said to the crowd "anyone got some glue".

It was not a hard hit out by any means but importantly no injuries that i noticed.
A good crowd but don't want to have a guess at numbers.
The big number 3 carpark was full.
When i left at 7pm i noticed a few cars still parked right up the hill leading to the freeway.
Game time 4 x 24 minutes or thereabouts.

I will post some photos of the whiteboard with players positions later, assuming they are readable.
Right now, it's time for dinner.

Joyce was in the ones all day. I swore he switched coming out of the huddles at half time but when I looked again he was still in the ones 🤷

I knew it, Willmot was on the wing today while Wilmot was still defence as well, wonder where Wilmont was playing today in the 2s though

No doubt we have the talent. And some of our players know it.

This is the year when we find out whether we can put it all together and be a great team not just a good team with lots of great players.

I don't read much into practice matches but many of your comments have been insightful.

We have a lot of choices now in several positions up the flanks and around the wings. Interested to see who we settle on.

The ones whiteboard for 1st quarter
It was swinging a fair bit in his hand so that's the best shot i got.
That should give you an idea of how they started the game.
Unable to get the two whiteboard at this stage.
Looks like Wilmott was wing relief (yellow) in the 1st quarter also.
I only noticed him wing the 2nd half but as i mentioned i don't take in all that is happening.

I like that midfield set up, Dunkley, Neale and Dev as the main extractors. McCluggage, Ashcroft and Bailey as the receivers when they’re in there.

My pick is Wilmot. Speed about the same but disposal way better. He was playing higher up than McKenna though, not really the same position

Nice to say hello to Sam Mayes at Springfield today

Pretty good actually. Even laid the odd tackle. Maybe the Davis influence 😉
Thanks.

Not writing off he has another level after a few years of injuries

Kinda gets pigeon holed as in Joe is always Joe

Is this true though ?

Huge talent
