Handful of piccies from Monday morning here. I'll post some from last night's session 'ron, if I can manage it.

Cockatoo looks ripped. How did he look running, doing drills etc?

Brisbane football boss Danny Daly has revealed the Lions are set to face grand finalists Geelong and Sydney as part of their pre-season fixture ahead of the 2023 AFL season.

The AFL is yet to confirm the final details of the 2023 AAMI Community Series, which is expected to see just nine games played.

One weekend of action is expected to commence from March 2-5, with the one round of games to be played after the AFL added a further round to the regular season with the implementation of Gather Round.

Clubs will also be able to play practice matches prior to the AFL-organised schedule, which comes two weeks out from Round 1 of the home and away season.

Daly has disclosed that the Lions will face Sydney in late February in New South Wales before hosting Geelong at their new Springfield venue the following week in what will be their official pre-season bout.

"Next week we'll start some intraclub (games) and they'll start with two (halves) by 10s (quarter length in minutes) and work up to four by 20s," Daly told TAB Radio.

"There'll be four or five weeks of that.

A likely return timeline for the pair is yet to be known, while Marcus Adams' name wasn't raised by Daly following the defender's 2022 season being cut short due to concussion concerns.

Brisbane are touted to be among the strongest sides in the AFL this season after a promising off-season of recruitment, where they secured Western Bulldogsmidfielder Josh Dunkley, premiership Hawthorn forward Jack Gunston, former Bomber Conor McKenna and father-son draft pair Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher.

The Lions begin their 2023 campaign with a trip to Adelaide Oval to face Port Adelaide on Saturday, March 18 before returning to the Gabba to host Melbourne the following Friday night.

Adams not being mentioned is pretty telling at this point.

Has he been sighted training at all?

I know a lot of us have maybe mentally moved on from Zorko to some extent, but it’s promising to see him mixing it with that Sharp, Clug, Wilmott running pack. It’s hard to gauge how far they’ve traveled, but they don’t look ‘first 250m fresh’.

He’s never been my favourite player, but if he’s able to throw off that Achilles he’s been carrying for 2 years, he could be an unexpected surprise packet.

He does indeed based off that photo.

I know it’s unlikely, but it would be fantastic to see him cement a spot in the 22 given what he can do when fit.
Looks like he is doing everything he can to be in the best possible shape physically in order to give himself a chance of breaking back into the senior team and earning a new contract. Great to see and I would love to see him back in the best 22.

Gee Rayner is a lump of a lad.

Maybe with the press focusing on Ashcroft this year he can quietly get on with that breakout he has in him.
lets hope so. If he does, will be mostly as a forward with time spent in the middle, IMO Cam (at this stage)is not a fulltime midfielder, and based on the hype, Ashcroft probably cements a permanent spot in the next 12 to 18 months as a midfielder and then there is Dev who I believe should be getting more games. Not to mention Neal, Dunkley, Lyons (if he is 100% fit), Clug, Zac etc etc

As a few have mentioned Cam could come under some pressure this year to maintain a permanent spot, first four weeks are tough games so will be interesting...had enough of the cricket time for footy.

The cricket's been a bit boring this year , can't wait for the footy to start. Fwiiw I can't see Cam's spot being in any jeopardy unless he really stinks it up. We stuck with him for some time when he was just learning and sometimes not all that good . Last year was the first year where I thought at times he showed signs of becoming a very influential player. You'd think with natural progression and his second season post the ACL he could really go on with it and be consistently good.

Hoping this is a breakout year for him.

Also seems a bit odd no return date for Berry or Gardiner. Should have had surgery end of september, so more than 3 months ago, i would have thought would be getting close to contact of some sort?

I think he has taken reasonably big steps fwd each year, not huge, but big enough to notice and keep his spot. Cruelled for a year obviously with injury. Last year I think he came back wonderfully, showed great strength then pace inside on occasions, also kicked 4 and turned a game. He knows he can do it, just needs to make it more consistent.

It's gotta be so hard, in a team now full of big performers, to have a starring breakout year. For any player really, even young Ashcroft. If Rayner has 4 or 5 games next season at his best from last year, instead of in patches like last year, I'd say he's coming on pretty well, lol.

Set a level, then make it consistent, that sets another level then make that consistent. That's the best of improvement we can get from any player.

Does that make sense, I've had a few?

Has been training with the defensive group all this week.

I think that is a fantastic idea for his development. Wouldn't play in the backline during the season, but training half back/backline is a great method of development. Did wonders for Acker.
