There's a difference between shepherding and holding/dragging a player down. There are no rules for Shepherding on the goal line if it’s your team going for goal.

Watched the replay and purely looking analytically, there's certainly a few things we would want to tidy up if we find ourselves less than a goal up with a few minutes to play in a final.
Some pretty big errors in the last 2 minutes:
- Newman panic kicks off his right up the corridor straight to Salem who has an open shot from 50m
- Fisher penalised for insufficient intent
- Acres skying a kick into the corridor
- Curnow let's his man side step him and run through the corridor to set up the Pettacca shot at goal
- Curnow holding the footy which happens, but if he didn't get pinged Acres would have for deliberate cause he tapped the ball straight out
- Acres clearing kick pinged for insufficient intent, although this might actually be part of the game plan to keep the ball boundary side and flood the D50
I'd actually prefer we left 1 or 2 more players forward, so they can contest the clearing kick instead of Melbourne having open players to kick it back inside 50 under no pressure.
Are you thinking about the 'block' by Pickett on Acres (I think?)There are no rules for Shepherding on the goal line if it’s your team going for goal.

Everyone else above is talking about how Marchbank's arm was pulled down when trying to jump for the ball.

Yep, was sceptical late last year and early this year, but the uptick in his ferocity has been incredibly pleasing. It’s only something small but I noticed several times against Gawn, Tom punching Gawns arms off of him when Gawn tried to engage at a ruck contest.
Tom is still a nearly player, but he has improved so many parts of his game this year, that I feel it’s only a matter of time.
This. How are these laser like goal assist passes that Charlie has been kicking in the last couple of weeks. Two against the saints and another against the dees. Must be going about 55 metres and getting there so quickly.
Matt Owies one of the main beneficiaries. Can't think of anyone else in the comp that could make those kicks.
That should be a given…I might sound like an Under 11's coach but would have thought we could have orchestrated a player literally sitting in the Melbourne goal-square for the last two minutes.
When Petracca takes the kick you have 3-4 Carlton player's (with their Melbourne opponent) players desperately running back to the goal line.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't I suppose. If the free Melbourne player was spotted up for a winning kick at goal we'd be lamenting that as well I suppose.
Sure.No luck.
Touched.
Agree, infuriating! No I’m saying that umpires dont pay free kicks against forwards infringing against defenders when the ball is going for goal.
All games, all teams, for several years now.
It’s a joke
Technically Marchbank could be considered as well to be going for the mark as the ball was dropping before the goal line and not over. He lept, had tried to get both arms up with one arm dragged down... regardless if he's not forward facing the ball, being held down is impeding his attempt at attempt for the mark as well. There's a difference between shepherding and holding/dragging a player down.
As bad as Acres was in a couple of moments late in the game, just want to mention his effort to dive across Petracca’s boot trying to smother that last kick for goal.
His effort probably impacted Petracca’s kick to give Marchbank a chance to touch it as he often carries that distance easily !!
Should of been a free kick to Marchbank but why & how was Petracca on his own at that stage of the game.

Had to quickly make up for none last weekDoes heaps of good things throughout every match, has been a very good edition, took only 5 minutes to get his customary out on the full against the Demons.
Apparently during his weekly chat with the sports psych he stated "I beat my old mob, but something still felt incomplete". Read his lips after his OOB against Melbourne... "that's what it was!".Had to quickly make up for none last week
Those heart stopping last 2 minutes ...

Does anyone else think we and The Dees arr building towards a spicy rivalry in the next few years (esp if/when meet in finals)
I get the impression both our players and theirs really don't like each other much, which is strong ingredient in any strong rivalry !
