Team is in …

NO. CHANGES.

Sam Docherty will play his 150th game in the Navy Blue guernsey - the jumper he grew up wearing as a supporter - as Carlton looks to continue its strong run of form from recent months.

Last weekend’s sub, Ed Curnow is the sole omission from the Round 22 team: he has been named as one of four emergencies alongside Jordan Boyd (now available after suspension), Sam Durdin and Josh Honey. One of those four will be named as sub an hour before the bounce.

Caleb Marchbank is an outstanding footballer, just ask his team mates how they rate him.

Lacks continuity and match practice, just like a chap called Charlie Curnow did when he was pretty vanilla in late 2021.

He’ll come good, lock it in.

Calling him “VFL standard” is beyond comical .
Totally agree... sadly, when he does start showing the quality of footballer he is, the injury God's strike.
Hoping for some luck for the fella..his best makes us a better side.

IMHO, Cripps, Hewett, Walsh, Kennedy, Cerra are all locks
That last spot up for grabs, with one of Kennedy, Hewett and Dow to play (reckon that's the current pecking order but can change).

Have enough players in the 22 that can rotate through that we don't need 5 dedicated mids. Doc, Fog, Cuners can all roll through.

Agree Fisher and Dow are depth
I think Fish will be fighting Boyd for a backline role moving forward.

I've watched that 2nd half two more times since the game.

Fishers ball use coming out of there was terrific.

Reminds me of how the doggies use Caleb Daniel back there.

Good options to have. Boyd is also a fantastic user.

Fish is probably more creative and has the ability to find the ball more.

Boyd more aggressive and quick. But more of a lockdown option who can kick well.

We're starting to get genuine options all over the park

Yes, agreed.

But Boyd averages 12 disposals a game.... Fisher got a few more...small dataset in that role granted.

But Boyd a harder nut by some margin.

Interesting decision coming up.
Agree, Boyd looks like the better 'defender' and 1-on-1 option however Fish certainly the more attacking, engineers more of the football and perhaps ensures more accountability from opponent.

Reckon match committee have their favourites and suspect Fish might lose out to Boyd being available.

With Melbourne's depth of small/medium forward talent...as the El Paso Taco girl says...why not try both on Saturday night.

Kennedy's strong marking, and his bullocking, are his key points of difference.

And he ain't slow despite what most think....
Agree, when we have Hewett playing well though I don’t think he will come straight in after such a long time out. He probably won’t get the opportunity to get back in as a starting mid this season if all midfielders are fit.

If Paddy strings a couple more good games together (+25 possies, 4 tackles, 7 clearance and a goal per game and all active actions) is Kennedy and auto in?
It's not Kennedy that will put him out. When cerra and Walsh return based on how they are previously rated then Paddy is back the sub role.

Gets another chance to change that perception this week.

Unpopular opinion probably … but Ed as a late sub worked

11 minutes game time
4 disposals
1 goal assist
3 score involvements

Got the handball out in the acres goal , and kicked to set up another.

Didn’t mind it at all
I'd still prefer this week pending on injury status to have Boyd/Fisher/Dow ahead as a potential sub.

Huge opportunity this weekend to cause havoc and fear in the top 4 teams' heads. Oliver might be back but has had a long layoff and might be nervous. Dees will need him to get up, which could play into our favour.

If we can outwork and/or stop Gawn, Trac and smack around Oliver, we're a big shout. Just need to maintain the same pressure, intensity and process that is behind our success.

If Boyd is fit, I'd definitely bring him back in but gee it's a tough one.

With Gov still out, I'd be nervous taking Marchy out for him as it'd only leave Weiters and Kemp to take on their talls. However, they only played one genuine tall forward last week in JVR so I reckon this is the week to do it.

Fish was a revelation down back so I'd find it hard to drop him, whereas Marchy was rusty (again). Only thing that could change this is if Kemp isn't right. In which case, he survives.

Keep it simple, I reckon. Back in the boys to do it again - they've got the belief and it'd be nice to not have so many forced changes for once.

IN: Boyd | OUT: Marchbank (or Kemp if injured), Ed (sub again)

North Melbourne smacked this mob for a half of football. Oliver back or not, we can beat them.

8 in a row, boys. Let's **** go.

Will be interesting which way we go with the defensive mix. Cincotta, Boyd, Saad and Fisher. Watched Cincotta closely at the ground, and he got lost numerous times, making the wrong decision to sag off and being hurt on the overlap. Been in pretty good form but he might be the one to go. Spots are tight down back.

Fisher in puts less pressure on Saad to attack. Saad hasn't really excelled in that role this season for whatever reason. Definitely an option to have Saad play more of a lockdown / intercept role. Fisher plays like he does and teams will need to put time into him, potentially freeing up Saad to some extent.

If it's Boyd in for Fisher, teams will go back to locking down on Saad, as neither Boyd or Cincotta are a consistent attacking threat at present.

Love our balance of offensive and defensive smalls at the moment.
All can lock down (bar Fisher) and all can attack given the opportunity, some better than others.

Boyd plays this week for me purely for his ruthless defensive intent and speed, not sure who comes out.

Bolded bit probably the key difference for me.

First job is to be able to defend as required and Boyd is better at it so thinking Fish will make way.

I just wish/ hope for one of our outs to be back.
Our system is working, but playing top level teams, the more talent each role player has, the better.
Mind you, Dees are still faffing around trying to find the right positioning for their own system.
Hopeful but not expectant.

I will put my tip in early this week.
Demons by 34 points.
I don't think we can win contested ball and clearance with Oliver and Petracca, which will put the Blues on the back foot and deny us our one wood.
Don't worry, all is not lost, we will meet them in the last 2 weeks of the finals and with our players back, it will be a different story. The winner of this game is almost premiership favourite
If Trac plays in the centre - who are they going to kick it to in the forward line, with Petty going down it’s slim pickings up forward. I’ll guess he’ll play 70% forward, 30% centre. They’ll have Midfield ascendency due to the outs, we’ll have ascendency in defence and it’ll be wether our forward line functions or May & Lever mark everything going in as to wether we win or lose

I don't personally have him in our best 22 but he's incredible for the depth chart with his versatility. Genuinely hope he stays.

Expect many other clubs would be interested in him. Would likely kick more goals in forward lines that don't have two dominant targets.
It's absurd talking about the best 22 when we have injuries constantly and they will continue considering the rules around concussion...... We will always find a place for Jack as far as I'm concerned given his versatility

Re our FWD line, we've seen a distinct move away from the long bomb (to interceptors), rather - sharp targeted entries into FWD 50.

I think we will take May & Lever out of the play, to the same degree we did Moore & Murphy.

I am big on Marchy but he is so far off the pace right now it’s not funny.
No denying his talent and the hard work it’s taken to get back into the side, but that doesn’t undo some of those costly turnovers. Killed our momentum multiple times. Hopefully this is the week he begins to settle. It was always going to take some time and I suspect if we didn’t have so many injuries they would’ve let him dominate in the VFL for a month.

The closer we get to this game, the more confident I feel.

Our backline is the best in the comp for the past 8 weeks.

Our forward line is 3rd best in the comp for the past 8 weeks.

Our mids are top 2 best clearance & goals scored from clearance, in the comp.

This with the potential for a few quality IN's - possible Walsh & SOS...(will Boyd take up his roll again)?

Our team is full of confidence & buying into a beautifully balanced gameplan.

Importantly - playing at the G, a ground we love in front of a massive Carlton Home Crowd.

The Oppo's have a dodgy forward line, devoid of quality marking threats - granted they have a few handy smalls!

They are spluttering along - behind Vs North for 1/2 the game last week.

This one is ours.

I think if it comes to it we will have to make the tough decision between Hewett and Kennedy. We have been there before so many times with Hewett, Kennedy and Cripps and it's proven to be too slow.

The modern game being so much more open and so much about run and carry and burst speed from stoppages to attack and break down teams "team defence" as well as using leg speed to apply pressure now as opposed to heavy numbers, it's important we don't get too slow.

Going to be a really hard decision as those three are fabulous players. Not that dissimilar to the problem Hawthorn had with Josh Kennedy in a very good but a fraction on the slow side midfield.

A big part of our resurgence is adopting these new fundamentals. We apply pressure and generate run from stoppages with some of our quicker players particularly Walsh, Cerra and when needed Docherty. Now Dow is putting his hand up as a quick inside mid who can burst away from stoppages.

We may have some very tough decisions to make, but that is a sign of a good team with good depth, there has never been a premiership won where really good players don't miss out and if we do it that is what will happen.

The same dilemma is brewing with our backline. Particularly if Fisher puts his hand up like that.

This I will note 100%, the latest form of Dees has been underwhelming and the Roos win was a metaphor for that.

We should be favourites, Port and Pies were in far better form before they played us
