NO. CHANGES.

Sam Docherty will play his 150th game in the Navy Blue guernsey - the jumper he grew up wearing as a supporter - as Carlton looks to continue its strong run of form from recent months.

Last weekend’s sub, Ed Curnow is the sole omission from the Round 22 team: he has been named as one of four emergencies alongside Jordan Boyd (now available after suspension), Sam Durdin and Josh Honey. One of those four will be named as sub an hour before the bounce.

Fogarty gets one more week for mine, possessions were low but 17 pressure acts is solid

Marchbank out for Big Durdin in my opinion, I love Marchy but watching him today was so frustrating. Multiple fumbles, slow, lack of awareness - he played like someone who’s only played 4 games in 4 years.

Chance Walsh gets up? If so he comes in and Dow goes to sub

Hoping Kemp is okay and just had some tightness, we need him up and running.

In: S Durdin, Walsh
Out: Marchbank, Dow (Sub)

Edit: Boyd could be back too! Do we dare only play two keys and bring him in for run and drive? Worth a look considering Melbournes lack of forward height

We really missed Harry today especially with Charlie being tag teamed and that get out kick on the wing.

Definitely missed him working up to the wings and giving a stronger contest inside 50 compared to our resting ruckmen.

The Blues face off against the Dees fresh from a dominant Nic 'the Noodle' Newman masterclass vs Ross the Toss and his band of campaigners. The Blues are flying high, as are the Dees with both teams seen as two of the in form teams of the competition.

Carlton, inspired since the release of Herbatron's mid-season masterpiece highlighting how deep the Blues Bobblehead scandal ran through the club, has simply looked unstoppable.

They've made light work of cellar dwellers in Gold Coast, Hawthorn, West Coast, Fremantle and Collingwood and had a great win against Port Adelaide resulting in a thumping 50 point win before putting away the Saints on Sunday. Melbourne meanwhile have had a few comfortable wins versus North and Richmond and came out on top in a couple of finals like matches versus Brisbane and Adelaide.

Carlton will be looking to break Melbourne's 3 consecutive win streak vs Carlton with the last few clashes proving to be close encounters for the premiership fancies.

Some key match ups for the game:

  • Marc 'Strength' Pittonet vs Max Gawn
  • Paddy 'Brownlow still a chance' Dow vs Jack Viney
  • Nic 'Noodles' Newman vs Christian Petracca in his new role up forward.
  • Charles ' The King' Curnow vs Steven May
  • Jacob 'The Wall' Weitering vs Whoever Goodwin decides is playing forward this week.

On Carltons side they'll be worrying about how the Dees line up come Saturday night. With Harrison Petty likely out with what looks to be a bad injury and Bailey Fritsch still working his way back in the rehab group, the Dees are struggling with options up forward outside of Kosi Pickett who last year broke our hearts at the death in round 22. Petracca has shifted up forward too to provide another option but with the recent dominance of Carlton's midfield he may be forced to return to a prominent midfield role. Clayton Oliver is a chance to return which would be a huge boost for Melbourne and allow Petracca to stay a forward of centre player.

Max Gawn is back to All Australian form but with the tag team of Gawndy struggling together he is likely the lone hand vs Pittonet and Dekoning who will try to work him over throughout the game.

If Petracca is to stay up forward, responsibility will likely fall on one man...

Can Noodles contain the beast that is Lasagna Petracca? He is bigger, stronger and faster than any of the players Newman has matched up against in recent weeks and he is undoubtedly the key to a Melbourne victory.

From a Dees perspective they have the luxury of playing Carlton at a good time for them. With Mckay out for the next few weeks Lever and May will look to feast on the deep entries to Curnow as we saw with Wilkie and Battle last week. Containing Charles goes a long way to stopping Carlton but as St Kilda found out, the Blues reinvigorated play style is allowing multiple goal kickers to bob up for the Blues each week. Gawn will look to control the midfield battle through his superior ruck craft and make sure Cripps can't assert his strength around stoppages with the returns of Walsh and Cerra still in doubt.

However, unlike last year where the Dees were able to spread the field with superior wingers, Carlton has been able to bolster their outside run options during the off season and have found two really hard working battlers in Acres and Hollands. With a relatively even spread of outside players it likely comes back to who can get on top through the centre of the ground.

It should be a great Saturday night game with most of the football world tuning in to see if Carlton can continue their winning ways or whether the Dees can put a stop to the Carlton runaway train that's been gaining steam ever since the mid season bye.

Predictions? Blues by 15 with David Cuningham to remind the football world that he is one of the unluckiest campaigners to ever pull on a jumper and Collingwood fans to be whipping out every excuse in the book as to why the Blues suddenly look like the dominant team of the competition while their flag chances wane.

Marchbank is not a bad player and we all know that, he lacks match fitness. You get that back by playing and playing a hard fought game like that is a good way to get it. He will play next week. Especially with McGovern out and Kemp possibly injured as well.

Got a feeling this is a game we might just hold back our 50/50 players. If we lose we lose. Make sure those ones who aren't quite ready are ready to go and come back the following week for our run home.

Boyd back this week. Walsh, Cerra, McGovern and maybe McKay the week after. Kennedy could be around by then as well.

Ok, how did you two feel about the form of Fogarty, Docherty, and Owies? They were s**t, and I'm putting it down to fatigue.

Doc is a great player, so he battled through, but he was knackered and on 74% game time to try and keep him going for next week. I don't think he'll come up. Owies was solid, but his pressure quickly fell away. We're seeing some of the same problems from the first half of the season, so to challenge an in form team we need to rotate a little bit.

Longer term, the squad will be fitter, but right now we're breaking a cycle that's gone on for seasons.

Owies? He was excellent and won’t be dropped

Doc does look in need of a rest, was putrid in the first half, but there’s no way he’d be thinking that and he’ll demand to be played

Fog wasn’t great but his pressure was

I reckon we’ll go in unchanged, barring injuries which we might have finally got through a game without

When we are full, Pitto definitely off..

Traditional Rucks are overrated, we win games and clearances even when we get dominated in hit outs.

Pittonet is just too slow for this new style we’re playing and doesn’t take enough contested marks to justify his height advantage. Still can’t believe we signed him on for 4 years…

Silvagni is more effective as a double edged sword, tall enough to help ruck duties , but also sneaky enough to get a ground ball off the pack and run into the goal square.

Also takes a better contested mark than Pittonet

I’m not a huge fan of either but SOS suits our structure a lot more.

Along with a fit McKay , pitto will definitely be a surplus to requirements and
Let’s be honest here, he isn’t a top ten ruck in the comp

I think you’ll find Pittos hit outs to advantage are absolutely elite in the competition, we are murdering teams at stoppages, even without our best midfield in, and he’s a massive reason why.

TDK and Pitto are my number 1 duo

My point is that the traditional ruck role is overrated , I.e an ideal ruck needs to do more than hit outs to advantage to justify their position.

For example prime 2018 Grundy and Gawn this year are doing a lot more on the field than tapping the ball.

Also hit outs to advantage are not why we are winning stoppages

To put it in perspective , against freo with no real ruck we lost the hit outs 70 to 18 and we still won clearances 41-35…

Having TDK / JSOS sharing the ruck we may lose hit outs , but who cares , it gives us a ‘spare’ player that can do other things

Marchbank is a weird one, started the game on fire, laced out a couple really nice passes to good spots & was seeing the game really clearly.
Second half he wasn’t, had a couple “deer in the headlights moments”, that’s really backwards, not sure what was going on.

Feels strange to even say this, but is McKay still an automatic selection when he’s fit? Big call for them to make considering how we’ve been playing. I’m not sure McKay, TDK & pit can all fit?
He’s still one of the first picked, nothing has changed. That 2nd quarter yesterday would’ve panned out differently if we had Harry leading up the ground and clunking marks as the get out kick instead of Charlie leading up. We then would’ve had Charlie inside 50 on the next kick creating something.

I’ve said it before but before he got injured he’d really found his groove playing as pretty much an old fashioned CHF. His skill set is ideal for that role. Don’t let his nerves in front of goal deceive you, he’s always been a gun and still is.

Hopefully Cerra is good to go.
Felt we were down one front line midfielder in the first half.

Q: could Kemp take the Tractor?
Cerra is still at least another week away.
He just game back after one game out so he is a chance for the Suns game.
Not sure how Mckay is tracking but suspect he is still a few weeks away.

Poitto has dropped to 6th for hitouts to advantage per game and is well outside the top 10 for percentage of hitouts won. Our contested wins went through the roof after TDK moved into the main ruck role. St Kilda had edged ahead in the second quarter before the move.

Hell tdk finished with 8 score involvements and 6 clearances. Pitto is struggling atm. I think hes bloody necessary for now but a fit JSos and Harry. He's probably making way

Definitely missed him working up to the wings and giving a stronger contest inside 50 compared to our resting ruckmen.
This. Being questioned as an automatic inclusion is quite strange. Again, there were times yesterday, particularly in the first half, we were under immense pressure and the kick down the line on the wing was thwarted time and time again because we didn't have McKay to relieve the pressure.

I think they will go with
in Boyd out Fog, Fogarty becomes the sub. I’m not sure if they’ll try Boyd in that forward role or if Fish will play there but that’s my guess. If it’s not working just sub Fogarty in.
Marchbank will stay in but he is a worry. He has always been shaky with the ball and it’s heart in mouth in any one on one. His athleticism though does help us cover the ground.

Also Curnow had one of the best 10minutes you’ll see from a sub but I don’t think that’s sustainable

I am much more confident we will win a game of footy when Pitt and TDK are both in the side. Even if they play pretty poorly, i am still more confident the team will win the game of footy.

With our clearance strength, we just need a committed contest by a proper ruck for 100% of the game between them. If one or both actually play well, we are really hard to beat.

With all of our known strengths, and our ever improving role players, and taking into account our known weak areas, i really like to see a few things and the rest takes care of itself pretty much.

2 rucks - Pitto and TDK.
At least 3, and hopefully 4 of our elite runners - Walsh, Cottrell, Hollands and Acres.
2 of Gov, Kemp and Marchy to complement Weitering.
The good Jack Martin.
They are almost two halves of a perfect whole.

Pitto winning the tap ( not much else ).

Tommy playing like a ruck rover ( which I love).

We need both - watch out for when TDK starts clunking fully time.

Marchy is a class act - lacks confidence clearly - still doing some nice things.

Matchups will determine if needed.

Rob float mids forward - must have cover!

Would be great if he could give some ruck relief to support TDK & JSos going forward as I can’t see Pittonet being the answer.

Cant be dropping players on one bad performance. Fog has been a barometer for the past 6 weeks
He’s had 14 touches in 2 games. Yes his pressure is great, but realistically he can’t kick it more than 40m & isn’t a forward threat.
No way Mots is dropped- has been awesome, Owies presents better.
It’s Durds or Fog - fair argument to keep Fog in & see if Durds can produce in the 2s.
There’s a lot of love for Fog but we need more from that position moving forward.
