Think outside the box Gringo - nobody considered Connolly a midfielder until Batchelor started developing him as such this year! How do we know Bytel doesnt have the required or cant learn the forward craft if he is not given the opportunity? Ive seen him get front and centre and snap a couple of goals at VFL level. I hate that clubs 'pidgeon hole' players and dont give them the opportunities in differing positions to give them the best chance to suceed. If Bytel could add goal kicking change up midfielder to his scope, he all of a sudden looks much more attractive to the team and puts pressure on others.

Look at Geelongs sucess with Ratogulea playing in defence, when previously he had only been used as a tall forward/ruckman.

I agree re Greshams quick first few steps they are quick, but after that he is quite slow and gets run down far too often. It would be interesting to see the % of F50 entries that actually ended up with a team mate? I see him as worst kick in the side when running at full pace. Score involvements are another stat that again doesnt spell out a players effectiveness with the ball.

Score Involvement: Number of scoring chains where a player was involved with either a disposal, hitout-to-advantage, kick-in or knock-on.

There is no doubt he was winning more footy last year but to suggest his 2022 form line was good is misleading given his weaknesses. With his poor ball use Gresham is another we have to move past IMO. We simply cant keep carrying 'ball butchers' regardless of their positive traits.

For sure, not everyone has it though. I'm a lot more confident with our systems including development at the moment.

Gresham is having a down year but he's one of our few POD good players. I'd be hanging on to him unless he's causing trouble or asking crazy overs. Lots of good players are poor users. We haven't been able to attract good players from other clubs it is. We can only get guys like Hill who are around Gresh's level on $900k per year and a suite of picks and players.

We are acting like millionaires where we want to shelve all the existing players. I'm not sure what people have been smoking. You need to stockpile talent not start again every year.

I agree with this but the game might be moving away from that?

Mid-season All-Australian team from afl.com.au:

Wilkie - Moore - Sinclair
Daicos - Ballard - Dawson
Butters - Bontempelli - Serong
Petracca - Cameron - De Goey
Cameron - Curnow - Greene
English - Oliver - Neale
Daniher - Daicos - Rozee - Gulden

I don't know enough about all of them to characterise them but not many poor users there - Oliver the only one who stands out as being a bit messy by foot. Maybe Gulden or Serong or Ballard? I don't know enough about any of them.

Gulden is a gun by foot.

Petracca and Oliver would be the worst in that team but both are contested animals and they don't need silky skills because they bring something else to the table.

Not many of those mentioned in last years best kicks.

Touche` Gresham had his best game for the year last night and showed why you rate him so highly. His burst out of the centre and kicking were excellent, hopefully that is just the start of form curve going up. If he can continue that he will no doubt be worth another solid contract?

Dont forget everyone that Sandringham are playing Sydney at 1.05pm today - you can watch it live via the AFL site!!! Olli Hotton is named on a hff really keen to see how he goes.

It all comes down to money I would say , at the moment he is on good money 700k plus from what I recall hearing and I would expect a big cut in wage if we are going to keep him knowing we could use that money and a bit more to attract a midfielder to give us more potency - Gresham is basically 26 and has all the talent in the world but is inconsistent and has shown he is not to durable , hopefully we keep him but if his manager tries to get some stupid over the top contract for him I would let him go.
Having Owens , Windhager , Phillipou means Gresham will need to start producing the goods as a midfielder because we don't need a small forward on movie star wages who can't really kick much over 45m.
Billings and Ross were in the same boat having to sign on for much lower contract's because no one was willing to pay overs for them - I rate Gresham higher but I wouldn't be paying him more than what Crouch is getting.

We are starting to get some real quality kids coming through at Sandringham like , Keller , Heath , Van Es , Hotton and I would expect we pick up a couple more this coming trade period.
It's going to be interesting who gets sent packing and what we get for them - there seems to be a few that could be on the chopping block - it's a pity Ross has triggered another year on his contract because he would be one I would look at moving on even if we got nothing for him. To me he is just taking the place of a kid who should be getting the time in the midfield.
