VFL 2023 Swans Reserves

I never said who was the better player. I said the importance of those players to their teams.
The swans are one of the teams that has the most entries into the defensive end, so you need to have great defenders to repel the amount of ball that comes in. When you don’t have excellent defenders, high point scores against like last Saturday night will occur frequently.
Ok but they all played in the GF

And Paddy ain't coming back so it's semi moot now anyway.

For one Scott wouldn’t be dumb enough to put danger on a KPP
Probably because Dangerfield has never played in defence where as Mills spent 5 seasons as a defender. So he’d have a rough idea how to defend even against a KPP.

Ironically there were some on here who thought Mills should stay in defence and never move to the midfield.

As Matthew Lloyd said putting Gould on him wasn’t any better. Sometimes you just don’t have the depth to cover the injuries.

No doubt we had other options in your opinion. You’ve written off Francis. There must’ve been someone else though who could have filled the void.

The laughable part is you whinge.

VFL app found another 4 disposals, 1 mark and 1 tackle for Sheldrick, updated to 39.

Warner too got a bump to 23

This was the first game Vickery started to show why we drafted him. Has been building every week: 3, 8, 13, 18. The goal he kicked was very good, from 50 running on an angle to get passed the chasing defender.

Very much liked what I saw of Vickery.

People tend to seriously underrate the length of injury list and the effect it has on success. Last year we were blessed with injuries nearly all year and the results were there to see. Same can be said of Richmond, Geelong and Melbourne in recent years.

And part of what makes injuries so frustrating is that a lot of it is just luck or lack thereof (ie Rampe tripping over a damn chain) You need your core group of players fit and healthy if you want to be in any chance in this competition.

Great win y Port tonight , observations are that Naismith is not up to AFL , played against a midget , Riley Stoddard 38 in a losing team will go to West Coast

Still cannot Mark. Has always been a good tap ruckman and fights on well for contested ball. Is playing at the right level for him. Great to see him playing and enjoying himself.

Damien Truslove's take on our loss to the Bullants;

Didn't absorb the pressure as well as we should and ill discipline led to us giving away 50m penalties.

“The average age of the group is 20-21, a very young group, so you are going to get inconsistencies with performance at that sort of age group, but that is not an excuse for some of the things and areas we struggled in,” Truslove said.

Truslove's observations on individuals;

“Angus Sheldrick was outstanding. He was heavily tagged, was targeted by the opposition, but he absorbed it really well and found a lot of the ball. He was hard and and tough for four quarters,” Truslove said.

“Lachlan McAndrew got plenty of hitouts and continues to have some good form.”

“Nick Shipley, from our VFL list, is having a great season and was consistent again.

“Corey Warner worked hard with his running patterns to find plenty of footy as well.”

Making his return from injury, Tom Hickey played out valuable minutes, picking up 12 disposals and 17 hitouts.
“Hickey was great and needed the run. He played three quarters, worked pretty hard around the stoppages and it was good for him to get the run, hit some bodies and he will continue to get better.

Having been sidelined by a shin injury since being drafted late last year, Jacob Konstanty made his first appearance in the VFL competition.
“It was Jacob’s first VFL game and he played just over a half. It was good that he got through and got out there. It was a physical hard game so it was a bit of a tough one for him to come in, but he handled himself well and will continue to get better each game he plays.”

Cooper Vickery, pick No.27 in last year's national draft, finished with 18 disposals and a goal, moving in position while Marc Sheather saw a transition to the Swans backline.
Both young Swans impressed Truslove.

“Marc Sheather played down back and it was a new opportunity and new role for him,” he said.
“He was really good. He was competitive, aggressive and won most of his contests. He also gave a little bit of drive offensively, out of half back so I think that is an exciting move for the club going forward.

“Cooper Vickery also moved from the defence to the wing and gave us some run drive there and that was his best performance so far for the club, so that was a positive.

“With our young boys, we want to keep moving them around and teach them the craft of each line so they are not locked into one position, because it gives them an opportunity to play at AFL level in different roles but is also a good part of their learning.” Truslove added.

The Swans VFL side have the bye this weekend.

So much better report than we were used to last year.
I have a feeling it is driven by Truslove as this sort of overview was normal for him at GWS.

I know many disagree but I do like Sheather back. Could be the lockdown defender/pest we are looking for and Vickery certainly did look better (more natural) on the wing.
I'm sure no one else has mentioned it but I wouldn't mind Sheldrick getting a run in the mids in the seniors this week. :)

Yes interesting seeing Vickery play wing recently. He still seems quite slightly built, so good for him to have the versatility to play other positions.

He also gets to use his running and kicking ability in a different way. And wing at AFL level seems quite tactical with its positioning, so it gives him something new to learn.

And he has actually kicked a few goals like that. Where he has a burst of speed to get free of his opponent and then kicks a goal on the run from 50m out.

I hear Haley wanted to play for alwyn last week
It must be difficult for him to bond with his teammates as he flies in and out for games. He would probably miss that side of things, so I would expect that if another local VFL team came sniffing at the end of the season then he might be off.

Fantastic stuff Ticks for those that would have no idea what they are like
Not gonna lie the number one reason I love watching the reserves is because of the grounds. They just take me back to playing at ovals with really old stands and scoreboards, random folks on the hill in camping chairs, people walking around the fence with buckets of hot chips, people watching from their cars and honking for goals. How footy should be.
