Got the day off so been listening to a fair bit of a trade radio today. * it's brutal with all the advertising. Too much, I'll just get all my updates from this thread from now on.
Fanciful bullshit without ads > fanciful bullshit with ads.

A wise decision

What was his BigFooty account? There used to be somebody called TheZiebell but I haven't seen or heard of him for ages.

Can someone please tell me why we are not looking to pick up Riley Bonner for nothing/cheap?

He offers something we can use, off half back or on a wing when sheils slows down.
I don't mean to be rude but we've had this weird obsession with players like him for years, and it's cost us dearly. He basically needs a stairlift to get from point A to point B

He's a massive upgrade on Turner and as a DFA he's free.
He's not exactly hard, but can kick a footy.

If having him off half back releases Sheez until we can develop or find something better then i'd give it a go. Just need to wait and see what other options are avialable first.

We all see ourselves in our favorite players... but that's how I see my movement on a football field

Agree. I would rather see if a fresh start can reignite bonner over keeping turner.

That ship has sailed, hit an iceberg and sunk to the bottom of the ocean.

I can't remember who it was but Bonar has showed some ability to play on KPFs who were significantly bigger than him. The real issue with Bonar is that he is made of tissue paper.
He gets beaten in every contest when he's playing against a key forward-sized key forward. Often he makes you think "oh gee he did ok there" because he almost competes in a matchup he has absolutely no chance of winning. But this is not a reason to keep him on the list to cover our key defender deficiency, because he just isn't one.

I thought he was contracted until 2025...
But only for another year... id look to get him for a slightly high cost.. Pick 2 is probably a pick too far

It later says compensation is based on the player's average salary. Are they contradictory, or am I reading it wrong?
You're reading it wrong.

What they're saying is they rank all the contracts from Top 1-100%

They then take the free agents offered contract and average the wage across the total years.
i.e someone on 800, 700, 600, 500, 400 over 5 years is considered the same as a player on 600k for 5 years.

They then check where that contract would slot into the 1-100 for the year and assign compo accordingly.

I don't really think this is accurate. Losing Maj before the 2019 season started is a sliding door that and we'll never see what would have happened if he'd been healthy and played in 2019. I think we could have been a better side than we were in 2015-16 after that. We didn't defy expectations in 2018 because we were a side full of spuds, it was because we got value out of our players in ways we hadn't beforehand.

I guess part of the issue that year was our reliance on Ben Jacobs, who lost a career to the failure of umpires to protect players. But aside from that our post Brad season in 2019 was alot better than anything since and that was with his players and game plan. If Maj was there too and the trauma of his issues hadn't happened to him (and the rest of the side) then we'd have been stronger that year.

I'm glad Brad's gone and I think where we are now is a good place to build from (better than we'd have ever had otherwise,) but there were some very average sides dominate in that 2018 - 2020 period. Its one of those things we'll never know I guess. I think it was worth a shot until the end of 2020 (from a post 2016 perspective, not knowing covid or Maj's thing would happen.)

I also think Scott had flaws as a coach that would have probably prevented us winning a flag but I'm not 100% on that. Either way we'd be in about the same position now having just bottomed out.

But we might not have Clarko, Sheeze and Warlord. Or Will Phillips who i think will prove to be a gun player.
mmm, well I'm not sure the circumstances surrounding Maj influence the point I'm making - Brad Scott was allowed a second attempt at a "top up" strategy, which - with Polec, Hall, Pittard and Tyson - was a whole lot less successful than the first iteration (with Waite, del Santo, Higgins).

From a governance point of view, I'm always 'once bitten, twice shy', and a strong board would have gone with a fresh face and a different, draft-based approach

Anyway, doesn't matter now - as you say, we are where we are

Yeah, OK.

Cheers.
