Jack Darling could be on the trade table as part of a deal with North Melbourne to split the coveted No.1 pick.
West Coast’s biggest decision heading into the trade period is whether or not they would stick or split their first selection and essentially give up Harley Reid.
According to discussion on AFL Trade Radio, North Melbourne has shown interest in the Eagles’ maligned spearhead.
Last week West Coast list boss Rohan O’Brien said it would take an extraordinary offer to entertain giving away the pick a position he re-affirmed on Monday.
“We haven’t actually put a price on it because we feel like if we do that the perception is that we’ve got an appetite to trade it,” he said. “We’ll just wait and see what happens, and if someone gives us something that makes us turn our head we’ll consider it then.”

West Coast split their top pick last year, trading the No.2 selection in return for No.8 and No.12.
“This time last year we didn’t think we were going to do that but things evolved and we thought it was the best option,” O’Brien said.
“That’s why we’re keeping an open mind at the moment.”
Realistically North Melbourne is the only club with a draft hand remotely strong enough to entertain getting pick No.1 off the Eagles.
Currently, they possess picks 2, 14, 20, 42, 54, 62, and 79 and are expected to get pick No.3 as compensation for Ben McKay.

Any move for pick No.1 would likely see picks two and three head to the Eagles and a smattering of other picks with North Melbourne reportedly looking at also getting Jack Darling in return.
Darling has been below his best in recent seasons and could provide valuable forward-line experience alongside Nick Larkey as well as another tall option.
However, there have been no formal offers put forward and it would be hard to see the Eagles depart with their 500-goal star amidst the retirement of several other veterans in Luke Shuey, Shannon Hurn and Nic Naitanui earlier this season.
Two AND Three AND "a smattering of other picks" - think The West should look a little further than the WC Bigfooty pages when doing their research!

* OFF 2 and 3 is ******* ludicrous for Reid..

There's no way we trade 2 and 3 for 1 straight up.

If anything, I think it'll be something like;

WCE give:

1
Future 1st (2024)

NMFC give:
2
14
Future 1st (2024 Priority Pick end of 1st round)

2 and 11 for 1 and darling and we take on his big salary

This would be ideal, if we can do it for the PP's, not holding my breath though.

It's essentially 2, 24 PP x 2 for 1 and Darling in that scenario. We might have to throw something else in there to GC, maybe a swap of 2nds.

We need to maintain 4 picks in this years top 21*.

To go from 7 top 21 picks in 2 years (we currently hold), to 3 or 4 is no good imo.

Our F1 will likely be pick 1 again, you think the Eagles will offer two possible pick 1s?

The West is only just catching up on a week old rumour about Darling and heard someone ask the question on trade radio. Don't put any thought into it.

If Brady trades away both #2 and #3 to WCE he needs to be lined up against a wall and executed. Surely there couldn't be anyone stupid enough in this universe to even entertain that thought? North taking Darling and his salary off the Eagles' hands should be seen as a form of payment towards obtaining the #1 pick rather than something we need to pay for as part of any deal?

I think that is def the plan re taking Darling's wage. Nice

There might be something in it if it's considered a further sweetener on WC behalf to dump his salary, if your cap is at breaking point.

And then Barrett said look how much was required for pick 4 so that sets the std for pick 1.... what a load of crap!

Damo is a moron. There is a massive difference moving from 10 to 4 than 2 to 1, pick 2 is massively more valuable and still gives Eagles certainty outside of Reid.

“According to discussion on Trade Radio”… good god.

They have written an article based on a talk back callers “rumour”.

Darling is such a weird target.

He's 32 next year.

Whilst Taylor Walker just had a career year at 33, Darling will be cooked by the time we are finals contenders.

But having him allows us to keep going with cj and comben and then even draft a kpf and give him time to develop
