The ruck merry-go-round

Sydney’s emergence in the race for out-of-favour Demon Brodie Grundy could lead to Port Adelaide ramping up their bid for Bulldog Jordon Sweet.

The Power have met Grundy, a South Australian like Sweet, but the Swans are considered the frontrunners if, as expected, the former Magpie requests a trade after Melbourne’s finals campaign ends.

They are also at the front of the queue for North Melbourne’s Ben McKay, an in-demand restricted free agent, while The Age’s Peter Ryan revealed Sydney’s interest in Melbourne’s unrestricted free agent James Jordon.

The Demons appear to have softened their stance publicly on Grundy, who they acquired from Collingwood for a second-round pick last year. The dual All-Australian has played only once since round 17, with the experiment of pairing him with Max Gawn not working out.

Melbourne would almost certainly part with Grundy only if they find another suitable ruckman to serve as Gawn’s deputy, given 199-centimetre utility Josh Schache and untried rookies Will Verrall and Kyah Farris-White are their only other options.

The expectation is that one of Giants’ big men Matt Flynn or Braydon Preuss will depart – given Kieren Briggs’ ascension, and with Nick Madden on the rookie list – so the Demons could look at them. Preuss played 10 games for Melbourne over 2019 and 2020.

Alternatively, Scott Lycett, Brynn Teakle and Sam Hayes are out of contract at Port Adelaide, who have been on a months-long quest to upgrade their ruck stocks. They also have the contracted Dante Visentini.

North Melbourne would also be in the ruck market if unrestricted free agent Todd Goldstein signs with Essendon.

Dogs sniffing around injured Saint

A second club – the Western Bulldogs – has expressed interest in hard-luck St Kilda defender Nick Coffield, one of a number of Saints whose future is in limbo.

Brisbane also inquired about the out-of-contract Coffield, the No.8 pick in the 2017 draft who has not played at AFL level since 2021 due to an ACL setback and then persistent calf issues.

The 23-year-old made it back for four VFL games late in the season, averaging 23 disposals, six marks and eight rebound 50s, and is one of a number of out-of-contract players on the Bulldogs’ radar, including promising Lion Kai Lohmann.

Rivals believe fellow Saints Hunter Clark and the contracted Jack Billings (2025) and Dougal Howard (2024) are also gettable. St Kilda are keen to invest in the draft, but none of this group is likely to score them a high-end selection.

Billings – who coach Ross Lyon views as a forward only – has mild interest elsewhere and would ideally like to move on after playing only three senior games this season, but key defender Howard seems more likely to stay.

Zak Jones, Jimmy Webster, Daniel McKenzie, Liam Stocker and Ryan Byrnes are also without a deal beyond this year. Restricted free agent Jade Gresham’s future is also uncertain, particularly given it is highly unlikely the Saints would receive first-round compensation for him.

Gresham has been linked to Essendon for some time, and The Age confirmed on Monday they are in the hunt for the talented forward. He is keen to play for a big club, according to sources familiar with his intentions.

So the Age says Sydney are at the front of the queue for McKay, and The H-Sun says Essendon are. What does AFL Information, Trade Rumours and Results think? And of the three, which is the most credible?
And why do we all keep reading this crap when they obviously have no idea and are just guessing?

St kilda

Yeah anyone but * after they were adamant about not paying high as to not derail their draft order and pay adequately

We are moving heaven & earth to get rid of him fyi.
Still doesnt change the fact we need to have something in the pipeline (whether it be stop-gap/temporary or a permanent fix) to replace him in his area of key defence. I don't want Corr playing FB/CHB until Griff comes back mid-late next season.

Does anyone seriously believe that Viney wouldn't be acutely aware of this? They've known he was gone since mid year and will likely have plan a, b & c.

Your reasoning is sound, except for the fact that from all reports he's not really a key defender. Time will tell though.
Be a bit stiff to be 18 years old, weigh in at 93kg and stand 195cm tall and considered a back flanker/pocket? Those numbers scream future key defender to me.

You and Clarko might not be on the same page then.

We can only trust and hope so. I'd be bitterly disappointed if there wasnt even a plan D or E

We are in a world of hurt if Corr is playing on the like of Cameron/Hawkins, Curnow/McKay, Walker, Allen, Daniher and the other gun opposition key forwards

Cutting off the supply is key.

If our track record for the past 10+ years is anything to go by, that scares me as we were/are easy to score on. I still have nightmares about those multiple games where we were 5 goals up with under 10 mins to play and we lost (Bloody Petrenko and Kerridge haha)

You get a great coach in, you have to give him a little time to turn things around.

yeah dunno, my son is 16, 175cm, and 85kg,,,,,(and is an elite athlete btw)..... its not that hard to put on bulk at that age. Trade off with running ability but that then leads to the question, can he bulk up and maintain athleticism, if so ...perfect. If not then perhaps he's not a KPD.
