WAFL Colts grand final: Top AFL draft prospect Daniel Curtin headlines Claremont, Perth battle

Swiss army knife and projected top 5 pick, Daniel Curtin will be one of the many young guns on display as the Claremont Tigers take on Perth Demons at Optus Stadium this Sunday afternoon.

Claremont and Perth finished the season top of the colts ladder, with only a handful of percentage awarding the Demons a minor premiership.

These sides have been a step above the rest of the competition, only dropping two games a piece, both boasting a high powered offense and a stingy defensive game.

Facing off only two weeks ago, Claremont took the honours with an impressive 30-point victory on the back of Sam Van Rooyen, who kicked three goals.

Despite failing to secure an early grand final berth, Perth regained their confidence with a comprehensive victory over East Fremantle last week, proving that the squad will be ready to raise hell come Sunday.

A lot will rest on the shoulders of teenage sensation, Curtin.

Already proven to be a big game player, Curtin has starred in many of Claremont’s games so far this season.

His blistering form at state level boosted his draft stock significantly with the highly touted utility featuring in Claremont’s league side primarily as a defender.

Curtin has produced several impressive outings at top WAFL level, showcasing ample class, proving why recruiters are heading in droves to watch him play.

For Perth, the likes of Aiden O’Driscoll (brother of Fremantle young gun Nathan) and Oscar Hine-Baston will play vital roles for the Demons at either end of the ground on Sunday.

Much of the Demons’ success can be attributed to first year coach, Scott Moore. Perth have catapulted themselves up the ladder in recent years, vastly improving from cellar dwellers in 2021 (0 wins) to 1st place in 2023.

Could be also planting the seed for OOC next year

Pre agents are the latest trend.... as clubs know they can get more value that they the compo they will get the following yr. Darcy will get a first you would think so do Freo think they are top 8 next yr... we have plenty of high picks more than happy to not use all on draft

he is better than he is given credit for by the BF nuffies that saw him drop a couple of marks 2 years ago and formed their opinion then and there

For sure, and I have no idea how much of that was attributable to his fitness, his attitude, or playing in an unfamiliar role.

I do think the forward mix is going to be a really interesting watch next year. We can't play all of Zurhaar, George, Curtis, and Stephenson at the same time, particularly when Sheezel and Thomas are locks. Who takes precedence?
I would trade Zurharr. I’ve said this before and got shouted down but we would get a really good player for him and imo we have enough players like him. He’s overrated on here. Shake things up.

It also amuses me when people put George into their 23s over Ford, Stevo and Curtis - not having a crack at you - but the bloke is yet to play a game!!

Love this. Curtin is by far the biggest list need.

We must walk out of the draft with 1 of reid or Curtin. I wouldn’t be giving anything up other than ports first to move up to 1 to take reid. I think Curtin at 2 is almost as good and definitely a need.

Just worry about the go home factor however at the end of the day you have to back your environment in.

It's rare that the perfect mix of need + talent converges at Pick 2 like this.

Curtin is a gun. Rate him so highly. Want him at NMFC for the next 15 years please.

Spot on, Zurhaar very one dimensional, much happier to back in Curtis, Ford (George?) and think much better long term players that bring teammates into the game. Perfect time to trade him.

People wanting trade Zurhaar, one of our only proven match winners ffs.
I can understand it. Not saying that i would do it though. You’d want to see a lot more from the names that get run out as justification for trading him before considering it.

Zurhaar having an impact through the midfield this year proves that he is far from one dimensional.

He is a dynamic match winner, you don't trade those types, because they aren't exactly easy to find.
