Good player but not a position of need by any stretch. I'd be very surprised.
Is an upgrade on pretty much every defender besides Sicily, and frees up other players for different roles particularly if we see the promise of Weddle and Seamus continuing to grow.

Imagine this scenario playing out

Eagles trade pick 1 for pick 2 and port's 1st with the Kangas

We trade for the higher of the giants two picks in a cap dump with the giants for either Haynes or Whitfield.

Then trade that pick from the giants and our future 1 to the eagles for pick 2 and their current 2nd which is pick 19.

Trade 19 and our current 2nd for a pick in the 10-12 range.

Walk away from the draft with Watson, Caddy, another pick in the low teens and mccabe.

That's an absolute home run

We have significant interest in Doedee.

This seems like grabbing a player for the sake of it.
Doedee is 190cm, reasonably undersized as a genuine second KPD. While he's a quality third tall, we have Sicily.
Perhaps we see him in a Stratton role, but that would detract from the run we've started to generate from half-back.

Particularly if you want to free up Sic totally. Blanck and Doedee doing the lock down with DGB and Sic plus Dimma and Mitchell with a rotating Impey is not a bad backline. DGB has got to reach the level, but on balance, I think he will.

If it was a end of season that had Doedee and McCabe coming in , DGB and Scrimshaw would be shopped around. Seems Sam has given them
Ultimatums .
And maybe that’s the point. A few posters have said we are keen on Reid (unsurprisingly) and DGB would be a point of difference to offer the eagles for pick 1 in addition to good picks. Add the salary dump pick and we potentially might be able to get Reid, another top 10, McCabe and presumably Whitfield and doedee in this scenario. Happy to trade our first next year given how I expect we improve in 2024 with those additions for the loss of 1 player who isn’t playing much senior footy.

Love Doedee, he'd walk into our team and be our second best defender ...
However not sure playing all 4 would suit Sammys playing style. We run, we gun and we are aggressive. You get him as he's A-Grade talent, but there's going to be fallout, and I hope DGB isn't it.

As much as I would love it, I can't see another generous Jack Bowes type trade occurring again. Salary dumps will likely involve pick upgrades (attaining player + 2nd round pick, for a 3rd or 4th).
It's pure incompetence to give away a valuable player and a 1st round pick for loose change. Our supporter base would be livid if it were Hawthorn giving away Sicily + a top 5 pick in return for a 3rd round pick + salary relief.

Our list management team can demand a 1st round pick to take on Whitfield's contract, but I doubt GWS will be obliging. In saying that, I wouldn't be taking on any salary dumps unless the trade is favourable for us. If not, walk away.

There is no way you would play all 4 of those guys in the same team.

2014 - Gibson, Lake, Stratton & Spangher

2015 - Gibson, Lake, Stratton & Frawley
Different game. With the 6-6-6 rule we can’t have an extra number behind from the centre bounce. Also speed seems to be much more important compared to back then.

I think it’s no surprise adding speed in Mitchell and Weddle to our backline has improved it.

If Doedee comes in despite it being an interstate move Scrimshaw would suit the crows perfectly as they don’t really have an interceptor without Tom. Also adds elite kicking to replace Brodie Smith who is 31. Blanck Doedee Sicily Weddle Mitchell Hardwick CJ looks pretty good to me.

Disagree. The 6-6-6 rule was introduced to encourage greater scoring, but if you check the results of games this season that's not happening

I haven’t got to see much GWS games the last few years - if Whitfield was to come to us in a salary dump whose spot would he currently take in the side? I don’t like the idea of a 30 year old player being brought in at the expense of our developing crew.

The 6-6-6 rule prevents teams from starting an extra behind the ball so they can intercept the clearance then have the extra number to run the ball out.

Because there is no extra number now you need quick defenders to run and create options to generate fast attack out of the backline.

If you give teams time to set up behind the ball you are going to struggle.

In my opinion Bramble. Our right wing isn’t sorted and I think weddle stays back at least for a few years he looks great there and gives us flexibility. Win centre clearance out sideways connect to Amon or Whitfield to deliver inside 50. Would love to be a forward to that. Draft a project wingman who can spend a few years at Box Hill then come in to replace him. Maybe Darcy Wilson or Will Lorenz with the salary dump pick we get with Whitfield…a thing of beauty!

Whitfield would replace Bramble and Morrison in gameday squads and would make us a better side immediately.

It would also give us some flexibility by allowing us to try and get some late picks for both, or use them as makeweights. Though the latter seems kind of unlikely as that rarely happens.

Obviously the main issue with Whitfield is his age, but Amon is only a year younger and we went fairly hard at him. Neither may play in our future flag challenging side, but they may help us get valuable finals experience and help set a professional culture. Also, I think Ward, Day and Mackenzie could learn some things from Whitfield too.

But most importantly if he could help us net one of GWS's first rounders then that alone is good though reason.

First Rounder + Whitfield
For
Second Rounder + Bramble(?)

Yep, but you only have to maintain 6-6-6 before that ball is bounced in the centre. After that's happened teams can do whatever they want. With very low scoring there are less times the ball goes back to the centre for a bounce.

Ward was our starting wing alongside Amon before injury this year.

Given our midfield depth, it's a position he will need to make his own. Hopefully he can grow into it like a Clug, Sidebottom or prime Gaff.

Being stuck paying Whitfield 1million in 2025, 2026 (and 2027) when ideally we'd want to hit Free Agency hard as a really attractive destination...

It would be a big call and not all that straightforward.

Surely we wouldn't be looking to do this AND bring in Gresham or Doedee also.

I would hate to trade away our future first. Would make for a crap year knowing trade period is coming with no first-round pick. Besides the pick next year could be a top 5 pick again.
