The WA under 18's squad has been named. Includes Hansen jr, Clay Hall, Sam Van Rooyen, Lance Collard, Aiden O'Driscoll.

Dale may be able to post the rest.
The WAFL website and the start of a West article on the squad both say Hansen Jr is 19. How does that work with an U/18 squad? Do they have a quota of 19 year olds they can select? Perhaps if they didn't make it last year?

I think they allow a certain number of over and underagers. Taylor would probably know the ins and outs of the rules guiding it.

Big stuff for Jacob Whan from our academy, tall defender who has had stints in the midfield this year in the Colts

I don’t know the rules around who can and can’t be selected as an overager but from memory there’s some sort of criteria.

Tim English and Aliir Aliir were previously overagers for our state squad I believe.

Duffield reckons
A 194 centimetre, 19-year-old who missed out in last year’s draft after spending a portion of the year injured has emerged as a primary target for both West Coast and Fremantle at the mid-season rookie draft at the end of the month.
Gippsland Power forward Ryan Maric, who is expected to play for Victoria’s 22 and under “Young Guns” team in a trial match against the Victorian Metro under 18s team at the weekend, is shaping as a top five pick at the draft.

West Coast is believed to have been tracking his performance closely while one source has indicated that, if he makes it through to Fremantle, he is unlikely to get past the Dockers’ pick.

Maric probably would have been taken somewhere in the 30s at the national draft last year had it not been for back issues which kept him on the sidelines for a significant period and persuaded clubs to take a “wait and see” approach.

An experienced recruiter said he possessed the character and “all the tools” to eventually be an AFL player, but was not someone expected to step straight into senior AFL ranks.

Maric is still slightly built and would need some physical development.

Fremantle has a pick at the mid-season draft and is expected to take it. But it is understood the Dockers will wait and see who is available in a narrow talent pool before they decide whether to target a midfielder or a key position player.

At the moment, they have needs in both areas

f Fremantle and West Coast chase a key position player, then Claremont local Jack Buller (199cm, 21 years-old) shapes as an obvious contender and is believed to also be on North Melbourne’s radar.

If they look at speed, then Subiaco’s Robert Hansen has also caught the eye – but more as a forward than a midfielde

A top 5 pick that lad. Could even go to melb with our first pick
There is some excitement with this years crop.
But there is always a few that should have gone first round who didn’t.
The focus on these kids may actually work in our favour especially the WA crop.
I think if we can nail the MSD that will help fill some obvious holes with the draft.
We have form with taking Johnson and I reckon JVR may have been on that list too.
If we go Victorian, like we did not taking Darling then my mood will change.
Last years draft really was disappointing, with not even a second round pick to
get excited about. Felt sorry for Walls because that’s a sh.t sandwich.

It’s possibly to get one talented player I reckon, we could even bundle pick 21 and pick 39 together to get up to pick 17 or so and back into the end of the first round

That North third will be early 40's too, so we'll be ok. It's not ideal given where we'll finish but not a complete disaster

Well these kinds of threads are always fun. So in terms of picks I understand we have (and I am sure someone will correct me):
  • North Melbourne 2nd round priority pick (Guessing range would be 19-22)
  • North Melbourne 3rd round priority pick (37-41)
  • Carlton 3rd Round priority pick (50ish)
  • North Melbourne 4th round priority pick (50ish)
So because everyone is so unconsciously biased towards WA products, let's try and take a broader perspective lets name an initial potential player for each both from WA and from somewhere else:

North Melbourne 2nd Round Priority Pick
  • Non-West Australian option: Colby McKercher (Tasmania) - 181cm Wingman, traits: burst pace, hard running, high possessions. Downsides: gets caught doing too much sometimes, small, might not last till this pick.
  • West-Australian option: Riley Hardemann (Swan Districts) - 185cm Wingman, traits: hard running, good disposal, decent possession numbers, played a senior WAFL game already numbers: Downside: only medium sized category, does he have the top pace?
North Melbourne 3rd Round Priority Pick
  • Non-West Australian option: Sam Frangalas (Dandenong) - 187cm midfielder/forward, traits: Long kick, explosive, good size downsides: sometimes a bit wayward, not big possession getter, not really stamped himself as a pick me yet.
  • West Australian option: Lance Collard (Subiaco) - 188cm forward traits: kicked bags of goals at WAFL colts, "bag of tricks" player, explosive, pressure at ground level downsides: wafer thin and light weight, unlikely to be a midfielder
Carlton 3rd Round priority pick
  • Non-West Australian option: Billy Wilson (Dandenong) - 182cm HBF, traits: good kick and link man, speed and run, gets decent numbers downsides: small defender - do we need another?
  • West Australian option: Sam Van Rooyen (Claremont) - 193cm Forward, traits: good kick, endurance and marking, possibly some flexibility in position, runs on the board in the goal kicking area downsides: probably too small for a key forward at afl level (more high third forward / half forward flank), speed off the mark.
North Melbourne 3rd Round pick
  • Non-West Australian option: Ben Ridgeway (Glenelg) - 181cm midfielder, traits: captain/leadership material, speed, hard working inside midfielder good on the spread, downsides: small, kicking under pressure, nothing totally outstanding shown yet.
  • West Australian Option: Aiden O'Driscoll (Perth) - 177cm midfielder: pace to burn, decent possession numbers at WAFL colts. downsides: very small player, not outstanding possession numbers.

No love for Clay Hall? Also could Aiden play a similar game to Balla’s?

I like him but I think SVR is better quality in terms of disposal and has nice size whilst Aiden has super speed which sets him apart (Hall is probably a better alround player atm). But I was tempted to to list him as a WA option yes.

And yes Aiden might be a small forward option.
