I keep hearing Taj Hotton would be a top 5 pick if not for injury. Doesn't that mean a club should go after him in the top 10 unless they believe his body is made of Swiss cheese? Particularly clubs with multiple picks like Melbourne and Richmond. Yet I keep seeing him fall to GWS in phantom drafts.

Super fast talented player - i.e. Shai Bolton. But has been injured and hasn't proved himself is what I've heard. I'd like us to take a risk on him. Seems a good shot to be valuable. But then we are building a list almost from scratch, and maybe hsi type isn't such a priority. he's one I'm really wanting to see where he will end up.

Good talent is always a priority though. Even if a player is more of a cherry on top rather than a piece of the actual cake, I think teams would rather have a good cherry than a mediocre piece of cake..

I must admit this is the first time in years I have not really followed this draft as I knew Sydney would be getting some pretty bad picks late in the first round and it wasn't worth following too closely since at that point it would be impossible to predict who Beatson was going to call with picks 23 and 25 or something like that.

In saying that though, to get a bit informed, when is Twomey and Kevin Sheehan doing their mock draft they do every year?

Clearly you haven’t been keeping up, this is the super draft and the next Judd or Hodge will still be available at pick 27 (1st pick of the second round) and bottom 6 teams will be falling over themselves to offer a F1 to get back into this years draft.
Sydney’s picks look like being Buddy & Parker replacements.

:p

Buddy and Lockett I am thinking. I think their replacements would work well together in the forward line.

I have heard that while there is not a lot of super top end talent in the Harley Reid mold, the draft does go deep, so the player you get at 5 isn't that much better than the player you get at 20. The drop off isn't as high as most drafts.

Now that is a quotable quote "would rather have a good cherry than a mediocre piece of cake". In our case I reckon you are right. But sometimes the decent role player is worth a lot to the list. Right now we need pieces to build around, so go talent.

I understand what you are saying, but that has nothing to do with my reply to the OP.

He was saying something to the effect, that the Northern clubs do sfa for providing a pathway for kids, and their development.

I was saying that is not correct.

This is the system the AFL put in to place, we’re just playing by its rules.
Strange how the Ashcroft's and Marshall have done most of their development playing in the CTL for the Dragons, Vic's APS system and Vic Metro, I get it that the Ashcroft's are F/S but Marshall sure isn't.

Should draftees be honest in interviews or not?

If a kid is dead keen to remain in his home state, for whatever reason, would you rather he be up front about it, or lie in the interview, and then request to be traded back home as his initial contract is up?

Clubs have interviews for a reason - to flag potential issues. Sure, ideally all kids would be fine moving interstate... but IRL some of them just wont be.
Dominos.
For the dogs specifically:
⭐You could go from getting Naughton to selecting from Lochie O'Brien, Aiden Bonar, Jarrod Brander, Matthew Ling.

⭐Imagine if Bontempelli didn't want to stay in vic so you were fored to bypass him.

You can't take players from other states either for the same reason, and you want a midfielder. So in the top 20 you only have 3 options. Reach for flanker type in Salem/Jones or take Freeman at #4.

Berry killed your cat?

Berry killed your cat?
Not exactly, the cat killed Berry's first-round hopes instead and is running with murder as we speak ;)

Bad Cat Wtf GIF

From the vision though, Berry looks like a nice small forward to me and any club (similar to Dylan Moore mold) and whoever drafts him will have an excellent player at their disposal for years to come, wouldn't be shocked if he was selected between pick 10-20.

However in recent years at the draft, usually 1-2 (or more) players that are projected to be in first round calculations by draft experts then get taken up much later in the second and third rounds and we see bolters come in the late first round instead that not many experts would have been predicted.

Don't have any examples on me at the moment given I'm multitasking but you could also mount a case for this year with Moreas as well being picked up much earlier than my pick at 35 as well as Gross not being selected at all in my Top 40, when he could be very well selected in the 15-25 range.

Who knows what will happen though and maybe I'll look like an idiot at the end of the day but it's what makes the draft so fun to predict and watch with pure interest.

Zac Taylor comes to mind.

Slipped into the 40's when most phantoms had him going well inside 30.

Looks at home at AFL level now he's finally been given am opportunity too.

While the jury is out on if he'll be a good long-term player for Essendon but Archie Roberts was one from last year as well that I can remember clearly who was predicted to be selected in the 15-25 range but then wasn't picked until pick 54.
