Could be the beginning of a trend then. Historically very uncommon for Queenslanders to move to Victoria for footy but now we've got Sam Marshall (Melbourne Grammar), Caleb Nancarrow (Scotch) and Boston Everitt (Carey) all coming through in 2024. Perhaps the APS schools realised what they were missing out on when Will Ashcroft moved down at 15 and really opened the door for Queenslanders to dominate the Victorian pathway.
I wonder if the payroll tax issues might start to reduce the amount of football (general excellence :)........) scholarships available

Leo Lombard picked up 12 touches off the HF for the Suns in the VFL preliminary final and didn't look out of place. Will be interested to see where he is rated next year, another one from the Suns academy.
Looks a certain first rounder at this stage. Some even have him in the top 10. Winning a VFL flag at 16 years old is a very rare achievement in this day and age so I'm sure it'll make headlines if it happens next week.

Because there’s only 4 clubs allowed to play kids in their team.

Can’t speak for Sydney or GWS, but the Lions rarely even play top age academy kids in our team.

Not sure that's true. Harley Reid played multiple games for Carlton's VFL side this year.

It's a bit hilarious tbh.

Doesn't put much stock in the Academy systems and QLD footy if these players are viewing they have a better future developing in the AFL VIC system, as apposed to their own and the academies.

No doubt will probably play for one of the NAB League sides also.

Just like every Vic kid (country & metro) on a scholarship at such schools as well then. 🙄

It’s no different than kids from the country or overseas being sent to private schools in Australia or other Western countries. Parents want the best opportunity for their kids. If a big private school comes knocking, families are going to weigh up the options.

Reportedly quite a few Lions academy boys were offered scholarships. The majority turned them down.

That's a stretch. Going by that logic, you shouldn't put much stock in the South Australian footy pathway because Tex Wanganeen chose to accept a scholarship to board at Xavier College in Melbourne instead of staying in Adelaide. That's a ridiculous thing to suggest but it's in line with your logic. FYI plenty of Queenslanders have chosen to stay in the sunshine state and still get drafted. We're about to see three Queensland-based juniors drafted in the top 12 picks this year.

The simple fact is the majority of private schools in Queensland don't offer scholarships for talented Aussie rules juniors (not yet anyway) and often give scholarship opportunities to rugby union juniors instead. It's really not that surprising that a few talented Queenslanders accept the opportunity to board/play footy in Melbourne and chase their dream of becoming an AFL player. The surprising part is that it's taken this long for the APS schools to recognise the talent in Queensland when they've been tapping into talent from NSW, SA & NT for well over a decade.

How's Lombard looking now? Looked pretty good in the VFL GF today and now has a premiership medallion to his name. U17s All Star game up next for Lombard on Saturday.

The futures game squad has been allocated teams.

How do they allocate players into the two teams for the Futures game?
Looks like they've broken into positions groups then just randomly assigned them a team with an equal share of top enders

How compromised is the 2024 draft expected to be at this early stage?
At the top end or through out?

There were two father sons (1 Car + 1 BRI) and three academy kids (2 GC + 1 Syd) named in the 2022 U16 AA team.

Over all, there are a lot of father son kids this draft, and potentially a lot of academy kids.

Just from a Lions perspective, we have Levi Ashcroft who’s probably top 10, and we have hopes for 3 academy kids who might be second to third round talents.

Looking like 2 from the Suns academy at this point - Lombard (1st round) and Nancarrow (2nd or 3rd round).
