The 89 ranking was from Champion Data's ratings rather than the Phantom Draft. I know we bag CD a bit but it doesn't give a lot of confidence that he's actually a star.

More crucially while I think our small forward group could be better it wasn't the reason why the 2024 GF happened.
Champion Data says it all.
Might as well as have used his potential SuperCoach score.

No draftee tonight will change the grand final result.

Don’t need backline players? I look forward to the first game one of Rampe, McCartin or Melican miss and we will have the joy of watching our back up defender Sweet ****-All get torn apart by one of the 20 key forwards picked up by the other clubs.

Have Snell and Edwards too plus redrafting Hamling

Rome wasn’t building a day sure I’d love to have a Tigers haul where we could fix everything too

Alright then. McCartin gets injured next year. What happens next?
Does Rehab.
Has a cup of tea.
Is this some sort of weird pick your own adventure game?

What relevance does a 17/18 year old getting drafted got to do with McCartin?

No kid that young is going to parachuted into defense.

I get this, and you have to draft one eventually, but was any key forward we drafted now going to make a huge difference in our immediate window? To me it doesn't sound like any were rated highly enough to be at particularly high odds to offer more than our current 3 in the next 2-3 years.

Granted you could point to Morris at the Lions but outside of his involvement in the GF drubbing he was just as impotent as our key forwards throughout the finals.

We have to draft a key position player eventually. We can't just keep going "well we did not rate the talls in this draft"

Except key defenders come in and have an impact much earlier than key forwards.

McCartin has a long spell on the sidelines and the Swans are done, we can't win the flag without him.

Only Sheldrick of the ones you listed were first round

Meanwhile we have our great Dean Towers picks lol

Each of those players were drafted at a similar range to the selections we had tonight it's the number, not the round I am going off here (in previous years these were two second round picks)

Dean Towers was drafted in 2012 to a vastly different recruiting team to a team that has just won a flag and was looking for mature selections to make an immediate impact. Very different situation to now.

Stephens I admit was a failure of a selection, same with a few others, but all clubs have failures honestly we do a great job building our list, so am going to back us in.

People were adamant all year that 3 tall forwards don't work yet draft picks that suggest we're moving away from that are the end of the world? It's strange.

Granted, I'll admit I haven't followed much at all.
I don't say that three tall forwards don't work. I just say that OUR three tall forwards don't work.

What if McCartin gets a concussion next year and misses 2 months (which happened a few years ago)?

Who comes into the side? We will have Melican as our number 1 key defender and what else? Will Longmire have Rampe play tall, something he could do 8 years ago but can't do now? Will he bring in another key defender, and if so who?

We have at least tried with drafting Will Edwards and Snell in last few drafts.

Cochran as another intercepting tall (no a man marker)

Also have Francis and Hamling - regardless of how you feel about capability.

We have all of Buller and Hamling? As KPF back up

and neither were the highest priority. We already have Hayward and sometimes Heeney as medium sized forwards, and we have Papley and Wicks as the smaller forwards, again not perfect, but we have much bigger needs than small and medium forwards.

Naming Wicks: we needed a small forward

I agree with you, I was just answering your question.

Tigers haul will be a bust.
That tigers side has literally no spine or experience needed to sustain such a young crop of kids.
They'll lose games . Bigly.

Then Yze will be sacked.
Half of the tigers 1st rounders will be delisted/traded when Tasmania comes in.

I really hope Buller comes on next year to replace either McLean or Amartey.

King and chamberlain the year after. Maybe they were thinking about them and their development into the forward line for the future.

Still surprised we didn’t get a tall.

We have invested heavily into McLean and Amartey they wont be replaced

My thoughts from night one...

Dattoli - Cannot stress enough how much I love this pick. Small forwards are now as important in the modern game as key forwards or key defenders or inside midfielders. We have a number of candidates that can play such a role, but none with proven elite form in that role. So stoked about this one.

Bowman - Meh. My first thought was "sounds like Hayward and one is bad enough" (I'm not a Hayward fan - don't shoot me!) But on reflection I think it's okay, and maybe if he comes good he can even keep pressure on Hayward for spots. I hope this kid has good pressure, as that's something I think we definitely need more of, but I'd still have preferred us take a chance on one of the talls.

Us not picking tall forwards - Not sure why everyone is giving our recruitment staff flack for doing exactly what seemingly every other club did: not rate Armstrong, Shanahan or the Whitlocks enough to use an early pick on them. It's not like we overlooked them in the top ten.

Would like to see us add key defenders or hard pressure mids tomorrow.

All of those are either very late selections or junk pick trades. We are clearly not serious with our KPD depth issues doing things like that.

Maybe we will go into 2025 with a 2 key forward setup. If that's the case I guess we have enough on the list. Whether they're good enough is the question but clearly the club is backing them in.

Down back, I wonder if we're going to take Charlie McCartin, assuming of course he's not taken, perhaps with even our next pick?
