Having calmed down a bit since the live picks, I don't mind the players we've taken but I'm still miffed that we didn't go for a tall.
Dattoli looks like he could play a role for the present while Bowman is definitely a player for the future.
The former seems to have plenty of footy nous, polish and toughness about him which is always welcome. Hopefully Dattoli's comparisons to De Goey are more related to his on field exploits rather than off field though.
The latter needs to speak to Shane Lehane personally about what his strength and conditioning program should look like because I don't see Bowman pulling on a guernsey for at least a few years. His highlight reel is sensational but was he worth a first round pick?
They both tick the Longmire box of versatility with both players seemingly able to slot into a number of positions over time.
My next concern is if Jack Buller stagnates or goes backwards in the VFL next year because then our decision not to draft a tall will be all the more worrying. Cochran could be anything of course but at this point I see him more as a defender anyway.
I would hate to look back on this draft down the track and reaffirm what a lot of have already posted tonight - what were we thinking by letting so many quality tall forwards slip through our fingers?
Joel is a disappointing season away from being a dud while Hayden is so limited in his skillset. I don't think Logan is the messiah we're hoping for which is totally fine so long as he has a tall partner in crime to ease the load and expectation up foward.
I wait with bated breath to see how this all pans out.

Here's my rough breakdown of key/small-med forwards I would have been happy using a first round pick on.
Key forwards: Thilthotpe, Morris, Curnow, McKay, Treacy, Amiss, J Cameron, Andrew, Walter, B King, Cadman, Hogan, Van Rooyen, Larkey, M King, McDonald, Naughton, Ugle-Hagan, Sam Darcy, Allen
Smalls/medium fwds: Rankine, Rachele, Lohmann, C Cameron, Rayner, Elliott, Bobby Hill, Bolton, Stengle, D Jones, Greene, Daniels, Watson, Moore, Breust, Pickett, Fritsch, Papley
So 20-18 in favour of key forwards, but I was FAR more generous with my KPF selections (JVR, McDonald, Amiss, Morris) due to how hard they are to find so I allowed a fair bit of room for development.
I didn't factor in key defenders drafted as forwards, but I also didn't include lots of mid/fwd hybrids so it evens out.
I would say that those listed small forwards will be just as crucial to their teams' success next year as the key forwards, and I think that with the way the game is trending that the list probably include more small/mediums than keys with a few times.
I think people need to start adjusting their expectations and accept that KPFs aren't as inherently valuable at the draft as they were about a decade ago.

I only watched the gf once like most of us and thought we got smashed in clearances, but I looked at stats the other day and we actually won clearances +1 and lost contested possession by -2. Hard to believe
Rather than wallow, I've gone back to pretending I could do a better job than our list team.
I've assumed a few are off the table at our Pick 40, and I'm somewhat confident that Sims, Boxshall, Mraz, O'Farrell could be as well (that's what the italics means). So here's who I think will be around at our picks for our remaining needs, taking medium forwards off the table, no more small forwards, slightly de-prioritising the mid/fwd types as well.
Based on a speculative pick already, I've avoided the risk with Mraz, although if we're confident he's over his injury issues, we could grab him and then play him at both ends to see where he ends up, and then focus on other needs.

- Green is first preference, having to live without a KPD (other than whatever Cochran turns into) given we've used up a pick on a small forward, and just picking who sounds like the best small defensive option on paper as a rookie
- Yellow is the more ready-to-go option, particularly Sims if he's there (any of the other 3 if he isn't), Bell is reasonable size but probably doesn't see any action before Snell, Edwards, Frost is a solid unit from the SANFL Team of the Year, getting clearances and tackles for fun, previously in the GWS Academy (ACT product)
- Orange is for those prioritising a KPD and not dipping into the mature age mid market

We are about to draft a 195cm intercept defender tomorrow from the academy and have two 198cm plus players next year from the academy that are looking to be drafted.
How is that no KPP coming through the academy.

This weird obsession with having to draft a tall key position player this year is weird.
Made even weirder that we will add a 195cm intercept defender in Cochrane tomorrow.

Tbf pretty sure they were both 191cm at preseason testing this year so wouldn't be surprised if they are both 193cm now and could end up 196+. Think you also have to include McGroder and McCartney who are both talls in the year after that if they make it into the top 50 of their draft and choose AFL/Sydney
192 and 191 respectively.
Looking at Heeney in his draft year, just looks more solid. Bowman a bit taller sure.
I just don't see the comparison with Isaac, especially given his rugby background and being comfortable in the contest. Heeney was always going to be a mid or a medium forward who loves one-on-ones.
Bowman seems like a quick, mercurial type who doesn't really fare well in the contest unless he gets a clear leap (but to be fair, what a leap). And might end up at half back.

2024 Telstra AFL Draft Night 1 Recap: Dattoli and Bowman become Swans
The Sydney Swans have added two fresh faces to the club on the first night of the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft with Victorian Josh Dattoli and South Australian Ned Bowman joining the red and white.
The Bowman pick has reminded me of the Magor pick, albeit different ends of the draft, a medium forward touted to have X-factor, though Magor a bit more of a contested player.
Arguably not much difference in terms of being prolific goal kickers, at the same level, though Magor had some bags late, after a long injury stint mid year in his draft year.
Bowman projected late by most, but obviously some fans earlier. Magor had shown some proficiency as an inside mid as well, and I was rapt (as was Kinnear) to get him in the rookie draft (thought he might go 3rd round onwards).
Magor I think was a victim of a poor VFL team, then setup, where he was moved out of position to get near the ball, and never really put back to where his best footy had been played when we got more competitive. Hopefully we remedy this with Dattoli and Bowman.
