Yes thats correct.
So right now we can only take 4 picks in the ND as thats the amount of spots available on our PRIMARY list.
Which then means 1 CAT A ROOKIE spot available and 1 CAT B available.

Hoping we get Rome as a Cat A and Barrett as our Cat B. But ideally if we delist McEntee and Williams that gives us 3 spots available in our Cat A to get Montgomery/Francou/Hargrave or Polkinghorne

Unfortunately we just didn't cut deep enough on the main list. If Soldo was traded we would have another spot and also with Finlayson's 1 year extension after a poor year's performance.
I get he has personal issues and feel sorry for him but its a performance based industry.
That would of been TWO available list spots on the main and we could of moved Logan Evans to the main list and used our 5th (pick 94) which would be a pick in the 60s on Rome Burgoyne instead of Rookie listing him.
Hopefully he doesn't get bid on because we would be screwed.

Oh WELL!!
We have 5 picks across the national draft and the rookie A draft plus a Cat B vacancy. All 5 could be in the national draft or we could use one or two of them in the rookie A draft. We can have up to 6 category A rookies (leaving only 36 spots on the main list) , we currently have 4 of them. If Rome Burgoyne is bidded on in the national draft we either take him in the national draft or have to let him go. If we choose to match that pick, assuming we have used the other 4 picks before him, we don't have another list place (as it stands now) to pick a category A rookie as the main list would be at the maximum 38 and the rookie A list on 4 to take the main and rookie A lists to the maximum combined total of 42. If Rome is not bidded on we can use that 5th pick in the rookie draft.

Would you do 14 and 30 for 13 if Freo really want Berry and think we are going to draft him?
Depends on who is available but also whether we could package 30+36 for another pick in the late teens, but can’t see a natural buyer for that deal. Maybe Richmond for pick 18/20 if they could package a few picks in the 30s for a future pick from someone?

Basically its a question of whether Rome is taking a Senior spot or Rookie spot. Same with Barrett. That 5th pick in the rookie draft would just be used to take Rome if he isn't bid on in the ND.

If Barrett and Rome both get bid on in the ND, we have issues

There's lots of possibilities tbh. Lets say this deal with Freo happens, we would have 14, 29, 30, 36 and 50.

Package 36 and 50 for Brisbane's 27? Then we have 4 top 30 picks (14, 27, 29, 30). Would Sydney take 27 and 29 for 19 and something back? I am not sure if I'd do the deal yet, but its one to consider.

That deal with Freo though is a no-brainer.

Rome's easy come easy go. Like him but but there's players who are going to miss out completely I like as much.

Pretty much means that we're holding out for 4 non-tied picks, then to take Rome Burgoyne as either ND or CatA and rely on Barrett being a Cat B rookie. No wriggle room really. Poor old Montgomery probably misses out.

I honestly don't know why we're holding on to some of the guys we are, even if they are in contract.
If there is talent on the board later in the draft which has a lot more upside and potential than McEntee or Dylan Williams, I think we have to seriously think about it.

This is the megadraft to dial into and pick the late bones with.

Both McEntee and Williams seem to be backup in their positions at this stage so it could be a wise decision to bring in even more talent especially if next years draft is not so good.

I am just gonna say it, because I have been holding it in for a while and didnt want to look back. This list management has had its praises for its drafting as well as some trading and I'll give them that credit where its due. But there's a recent recurring theme of (and maybe its just me that feels this way) of us giving away our first round draft pick easily.

To put it in context, we have given away pick 18 this year and a future first rounder from 2025 for Esava, Soldo and Luko. Its a sliding doors moment but if we keep pick 18 this year, we would've solved the problem that Esava was meant to fix but hasnt (by drafting Trainor) and gives us flexibility to pick Dodson (instead of Soldo). Imo, during Ken's reign, this trade was the biggest screw up. Now we dont know how the Luko trade will end up, but I dont think we even put up a fight about the future first rounder.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. And FWIW, we gave Freo's future 2nd to Richmond instead of our own so we lost another 5ish places there. Anyway, rant over
It's what happens when you don't develop tall players well.

That's the issue, neither should be back ups in their positions. Can see an argument for Williams but if we're really being ruthless then he's a no as well.

One more thing on next year's draft, if there's going to be players who we think are good enough to be drafted but will miss out, then naturally (as long as they kick on and nominate again), they would be available to be drafted as a 19 year old? So can it really be that next year's draft is not so good? Sitting here watching the 2025 prospects, I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the commentary has been

Yeah, it's a balance between the one year left on their contracts and the possibility of getting a guy with a lot of upside late in the draft. I think there seems to be a fair whack of guys especially talls with potential.

And when it comes down to it, no one has a crystal ball to know if next year's draft is of a certain quality. Things change.

We look to have a fair whack of guys who might be retired or delisted next year so we will need to work out that without a first rounder next year what is best to go with. Late picks in this draft or later picks next year.

The problem with next year is about half the top 30 are academy or F/S. It is very heavily compromised.

The following year more so with Tasmania.

That's the issue though, aside from Boak I don't think we'll see retirements next year. Maybe Marshall due to concussions but that's it.

There'll be delistings in the form of Williams, McEntee, maybe Jackson. Perhaps even one of Charleson or Anasta if neither fire this year. Soldo will leave. Bergman is a question mark. We might have up to 8 or 9 changes in a year where the draft isn't as strong. So to not cut Williams, McEntee and Jackson now is a mistake. I feel for Jackson because there's something to work with but we have to be ruthless.

I don't deny that but there's perhaps even better talent coming out of SA next year than this year in terms of top end prospects.

You'll also have some draftable prospects that miss out this year that will be drafted as 19 year olds if they have solid seasons at state league level.

But saying that, this is why we need to cut deeper this year! I'd have rookies from this draft over some of the players on our list.

Compromised drafts will become the norm moving forward. When all you need is to have a parent born overseas or to live in two of the three biggest states in the country to be automatically zoned to a club, it leaves an increasingly lower number of players available to the open pool of players every year.

I can complain about height because I'm not keen on Berry either ;)

One tiny teddy I could cope with and that would be Dattoli based on highlights only. If you take out the talls in Cal Twomey's top 30 he's ranked almost alongside Berry.

Hotton's disposal and decision-making bothers me more than his height and injury.

Depending how many picks we end up with we should go tall a couple of times and depending on sliders I'm not opposed to going tall with #13. I wouldn't mind Charlie West at 50.

We should get Burgoyne and Barrett at the back end so we have a medium and small ready to go. Maybe Montgomery depending on list space. I did like the look of Ollie Francou, sort of a cut price Lalor, although his kicking looks a mixed bag.
I'd like to go big bodied midfielder (preferably above 189cm) for pick 13 (not keen on exchanging for 2 picks in 20s) & then go for a key position pick at 29 (we need both kp forward & back).

But also happy to swap that priority around if a quality tall (195cm plus) is available at pick 13 (as long as not Vic Metro based, flight risk too big imo).

Interested to hear more about Ollie Francou as I haven't watched him play & not much hype around him. Josh was an elite handpass but his kicking was very ordinary. Still a top footballer though with his evasiness in the packs.

Ollie Francou is a big chunky kid, completely unlike his old man, but racked up some big stats late in the season in u18s. Odd kicking action, not much science to his kick. But collects touches, tackles and clearances for fun. Had one game late in the year with 36 Disposals, 1.1 Goals, 6 Tackles 14 Clearances

Here's some video of him in a game v South.

There's a little bit of footage of Francou on YouTube. Physically seems pretty well developed, not sure he has that breakaway pace or agility, but could be a solid inside mid. Wouldn't hurt to take a swing on him if we delist another player.

Nevermind, Ford is all over it.

There's also some extra footage on the SANFL YouTube channel if you search "Francou" (round 6 and 12).

I don't think we need to go too crazy culling depth to bring in a heap of 18 years olds. I think we've already culled enough. We aren't rebuilding. The 4 picks in the top 50 in the ND should be enough.

Consensus has these guys rated from 11 to 17, kako was at 12. Looks like our first comes from one of these.

Murphy Reid181Mid/Fwd
Tobie Travaglia187Def/Mid
Xavier Lindsay183Mid
Bo Allan (WAFL)191Def/Mid
Joe Berry181Fwd
Taj Hotton182Mid/Fwd

Reid looks the most likely to slide to our pick out of that group. But I like him.

Bo Allan seems like the one to me, absolutely no intel whatsoever but my gut feel is that is who we are sniffing around to move up the order to get. Probably slots into a our best 23 straight away either in defence or a wing.

If we don't get him, i think we will still get a good player at 13. I like the sound of Reid, Berry, Travalgia, Hotton, etc.
