Regarding your first point, that is right but all our tall forwards can do that include Mitch, Luko and Marshall. We need one that's a genuine forward 50 target like Armstrong or Shanahan. Hence why Whitlock does not suit us.

King brothers had extremely good forward craft unlike Whitlock. They weren't as good at getting high up the ground but were genuine targets inside 50. I just can't see how Whitlock becomes a Dixon/Curnow/McKay/Hogan/Larkey type player. I see him more as a Hipwood/Marshall type player that can also ruck

I enjoy reading your opinions and admire your passion, you are obviously invested in drafting and it is great to see those perspectives.

It's just strange to me to see someone reticent about a tall forward because of their abundance of height rather than their lack of it.

I've only watched a few minutes of highlights, but I do like Whitlock's ability to get into spaces, take a mark in the open and move the play on. But they're only highlights and they always look good. I think the Marshall comparison is fair, he's the player Whitlock reminds me of.

I'm always suspicious of phantom drafters following the convention as we get closer to draft when it comes to our picks because often we will do something surprising. It's convenient to hand us Whitlock or another tall because that's what we're expected to do.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see the top dozen falling the way everyone thought they would a month ago, so Reid, Travaglia, Armstrong, Allan etc of that later top dozen range are all gone by our pick and it comes down to Whitlock, Hotton, Berry, Lindsay and quite possibly Shanahan.

Rookies we should be targeting with our ONLY selection in order:

- Jay Polkinghorne (SA) 191cm forward played primarily reserves for Norwood would be a great pickup.

- Thomas McKay (SA) 192cm defender can play either end could be a gem

- Josh Murphy (VIC C) 190cm strong bodied forward unlikely to be available at the rookie draft, kicked the most amount of goals at CLTs

- Harrison Ramm (SA) 201cm Key defender/ruck came equal first in the state combine 2km running 6:29 needs time to put on size but his versatility is key gives us potential ruck option to develop if Soldo tries to leave end of season 2025.

- Jacob Molier (SA) 201cm Ruck/Forward - another raw talent but something that could be worked on with both speed and athleticism his strengths

You have named a couple of handy tall types there that could be worth a spot on the rookie list, but re Soldo spitting the dummy for the 2nd time I doubt that unless both he and his manager are as thick as two short planks they will consider pulling that one again, because after the aints lost interest and no other suitors joined the queue for his signature I suspect there is a very strong chance that as soon as he is uncontracted at Alberton he will end up plying his trade back in the VFL.

I think for a 190cm well built kid he should be shrugging off tackles more than he does. Not saying he cant do it, but i dont think he does it as much as he could and that sort of shimmy of the hips to break free of a tackle is something he could work on.

I also find a higher percentage of his disposals are done whilst being tackled than what could be. Basically, I dont think hes learned how to use that size/power advantage he has, to his advantage just yet

If he could genuinely break free of tackles on a regular basis i’d have him in my top 10.

Matt and Jack Whitlock were born two minutes apart, are each almost 200 centimetres tall and will be first-round picks in the AFL draft – but they want to be known for more than being twins.

You have to love their attitude, they love being outdoors playing all sports, big kids who learned to play against other big kids by being each others' biggest rival in all manner of backyard sports.

Their mum would punish them by making them stay inside.

“It’s not every day you can go in the backyard and have one of the best key-position players in Australia to play against, so it’s very valuable,” Jack said.
“It’s good having someone to go through the same battles, and then also the same wins as you through life. We push each other pretty hard.”

They live on an 80 acre farm with goalposts set up, a basketball court, tennis court, cricket pitch and heaps of space. No wonder Parker and Cripps like them, there's Butters and Bergman characteristics rolled into the twins right there.

Matt even says they would prefer to be at different clubs so they could be their own person. Growing up, their parents emphasised their individuality rather than their 'twinness'.

I think that's more to him thinking he is smart enough to not need to rather than a lack of applying it as a craft and failing

Yep, again he does okay in the ruck at u18 level, much like his contested marking, because of his height advantage.

200cm+ tall, with a 91cm vertical, good mobility and a nice frame that can fill out. I think there’s plenty to work with when it comes to him in the ruck.

I get that people don’t like Whitlock currently, but imo, he has the tools and such a high upside to be anything. He’s definitely worth a shot at 13.

You’re worried he’s too big, which is why he dominated under-18s and won’t have that same advantage at AFL level. However, that height and vertical aren’t going anywhere. He can absolutely dominate at AFL level under the right mentorship.

Geelong could try to move up the order to land the draft’s best ruck prospect, South Australian Alex Dodson.
The Cats are understood to be keen on the Sturt big man but their first pick is not until No. 45, well after he is expected to be chosen.
So Geelong, which holds all its 2025 selections, may attempt to package a future call to land the under-18 All-Australian next week.
