I will be happy with whomever the Hawks Pick at 33, or if they trade up the draft for a player, or trade drown for value and a player. None of it is a concern in my book.

A quick analysis of the list areas I'd look at:

I don't think the Hawks are carrying any list cloggers and so we are now looking for possible upgrades on what are already very good players ... or players likely to retire soon.

1st: the replacements for the likely End Of Season-2025 retirements:
- Gunners: Calsher is his understudy with Battle, Sic, Scrim, McCabe and Scaife as others who can do the 3rd tall role.

From the National draft: the Whitlocks and Faull (unlikely to be possible and I would not spend the capital to reach), Barrat and Stumpf. I like both. Nichols as well but only if his kicking efficiency has been thoroughly recorded and deemed acceptable / fixable (would be a good defender which we do not need... too much like Cameron Bruce in his kicking...unreliable).


- Breust: Hardwick, Butler, maybe Seamus and even Day are options. And then there is Matt Hill who may slot in very quickly. I am so very excited by Matt.

From the National draft: Hotton if the Hawks go all in... unlikely to be possible. Hynes also works, but I would not reach.

Now the backups for our Best 22.

- Lewis and Chol: Ramsden and Scaife

From the draft: Needs to be power player. If possible Shanahan (I don't think he is possible), Sims or Gerreyn.

Sims for me.
I don't know what to think about Kayle Gerreyn. Will his obvious talents translate to AFL level or will his deficiencies hold him back. And does his frame and agility make him a certainty to have an ACL injury? If so, why has he not already done one? Gerreyn confounds me.

- Worpel: HH, CMac, Ward?.

From the Draft: Cody Anderson, Jack Ough.

Cody Anderson, the Beast from the East, is coming to the Hawks. I hope the Hawks make him basically skip the preseason and have him work with a specialist to completely break down his game, which reminds me of a good VFL player, ... and then rebuild it so that it becomes AFL level. It took Brad Sewell 5 years to be close to AFL decent in his disposal. Cody will have the luxury of not being needed at AFL level for at least 2 years, and the certainly that he will be on the list for that time. For mine he should make his weaknesses his strength (his disposal), as we already know his strengths (being a beast) are 100% AFL ready.


Overall: I don't care who the Hawks pick as we have already crushed this off season. I like Sims, Barrat, and have some interest in Ough and Stumph, but frankly, once Matt Hill chose the Hawks, on top of Battle and Barrass, the ND is now just GRAVEY

Our GRAVEY is Noah Mraz.

Others have suggested he could be developed as a fwd, I don't see that happening. McCabe is by far the better option to be a fwd.

Time to hit the weights Noah as you will be guarding the big boys in years to come. Frosty is your name-sake cousin of another language. Live in Frosty's pocket.

Welcome young man. Getting on a list is a great achievement. Deserving to stay on a list is your next challenge. And after that, deserving to be in the Hawks Best 22 come GF day is the ultimate goal.

Could also be Serong. We drafted him as a forward. He could be ready to go next year.

Right-you-are. Serong is a good mark, a great kick and could slot nicely in as the 3rd tall in the fwd line. We would be putting a lot on Dear as being the 2nd tall, but he did that job pretty well in 2024.
 
I saw a bit of Noah Mraz last year and he caught the eye and I learned after he only really started seriously playing footy that year. He has great athleticism good speed and endurance, an amazing leap and reads the play very well. He also did fantastic lockdown jobs in his bottom age year on Archer Reid and Jordan Croft so he has that as well. Given we have frost Turing 32 Sicily 30 and Barrass turning 30 in 2025 this makes a lot of sense. Mraz McCabe Scrimshaw in 3 years time if a formidable tall back 3 and the first 2 aren’t under pressure to develop too quickly. I really like the pick it’s high upside and a steal at 35.
Anderson has an opening as a pressure forward to start his career and has all the attributes.
Given what we did in the trade period this is a good draft.

The more I read these articles the more I realise it’s the dumbest thing in the world to rate a club’s draft haul before any of them have even kicked a ball for their clubs. You can only grade these in years to come - the whole ‘we can only really grade Hawthorn a C’ screams out ‘I’ve never watched these blokes play junior footy so ¯\(ツ)/¯’.

Even funnier is that they practically use the same argument for Collingwood and give them a C+. Geelong also gets a C+ not because of who drafted but pretty much because of this

Agree it’s clickbait but here we are…
If you do it then ranking should be against the going in expectations not outcome especially in the Lions case where it was pre-determined. Brisbane got an A. They matched 3 bids on 2 players we all knew they were taking and one from academy later on. That’s a C grade they did what was expected nothing more.

Seeking anything resembling footy insight from any article produced by Fox Sports/Fox Footy's faceless crew is always a fruitless endeavour. They're only useful for the laughs they provide.

ST KILDA

Picks (at start of night): 7, 8, 34, 45

Selections: Hunter Clark (7), Nick Coffield (8), Oscar Clavarino (35), Ben Paton (46)

St Kilda stole the show inside the top 10. Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield were clearly the best players on the board, with the duo both skilful in their position. That class is what the Saints lack — and what they addressed at this year’s draft. They also attempted to fill a void in a key-position role down back, picking up Oscar Clavarino — who is great at reading the play. Ben Paton is another fine intercept player who can also add a bit of rebound. St Kilda’s defensive stocks are certainly stronger after this.
