New to this board, so apologies if it's been covered. What was the story with Ned Maginness? He nominated, and was always reputed to be a fair bit better than Finn.

Welcome to Hawthorn Jack Gunston, bit long in the tooth but handy around the goals, great footy IQ.

3rd time we have recruited a Jack Gunston

Hope this one sticks and it only ends with a retirement

They're not even rating the drafting of the players for the pick....

"It is hard to hand the Hawks a grade better or worse than this, given they didn’t get involved until the second evening."
I made the point earlier about it not rating expected outcome just outcome. If you look at Lions and Crows for example they could have saved all the travel costs as AI could have executed their drafts. If you are North maybe you want to consider it going forward…😉

An old random generator would suffice for North.

As I recall, the D+ was because we chose Frenchie over Phillipou, the 'big bodied' mid.

Pretty sure I would prefer Frenchie right now.

Proves the 'Who won the draft' question and associated ratings is just a load of sh!t and we should not get worked up over it. To be ignored.

I think it was the Hawks Insiders podcast who had a Fox Footy journo on and from memory he essentially said they hate having to do the gradings for all the reasons we know are stupid but its content and it gets engagement.

In other words, if they just list who we drafted then nobody cares. If they give it a grade then people will debate it. The fact several years on we're still talking about it proves it's an effective strategy.

What happened to Stumpf? Rated by some as a prospect for our first pick but not a sniff from any club during the draft.
I was definitely keen on him as a longer term investment. He is a bottom ager so there is a good chance we might see him in next year’s draft.

What would be interesting is knowing if J Whitlock was on the Club’s radar had ******* Port not taken him.

We had the best small forwards in the league and some of you are acting like

Clocked the fastest 20-metre sprint time of 2.815 seconds, which ranks as the fifth-quickest in Combine history

76cm vertical, best at the combine.
November born too, so he could have a lot of improvement in him.

I hope we invite him to BH.
He could be a MSD target.
Looks a good mover, but highlights are limited.

kicked 27 goals as an undersized 196cm forward.
Virtually an underaged player.
Man he sounds like he's worth a punt.

Whilst picking a key defender at our first pick seemed perplexing at first, I have a feeling after night 1 we ranked the best available KPPs (regardless of position) and were going to pick whoever fell through. Shanahan and J. Whitlock would have been the top 2 on that list and we missed out so the next best was Mraz.

Given that we're stacked with KPDs now, I wouldn't be surprised if Sicily or even Battle play as a full time forward next year. And Josh Weddle will almost certainly not be in our backline from next year (either wing/undersized ruck-mid/impact player around the ground).

Frost/Blanck take the no. 1 key forward, Barrass/Battle take no.2, Scrimshaw takes no.3 - and Serong/McCabe/Mraz also taking the 3rd best key forward if/when they do play (i.e. depth).

Sicily forward alongside Chol & Lewis (or Gunston when required) eases the pressure off of Dear and let's the kid actually develop a bit more without being hammered at AFL level every week. It will be good for his growth. And Scaife/Ramsden as key forward depth when required or when we see an opportunity for them.

Does the Mraz call sound a bit better now? Sis is a heck of an option to throw up forward..

Don't think he was ever rated higher than Finn tbh. Finn was a huge bolter from memory. Was mid teens in most phantom drafts a contested goal kicking mid.
Agreed.

Ned had never been rated better than Finn.

Finn himself wasn’t in the Vic Metro Academy of 30 players at the beginning of his draft year.

He took that “non-rating” on board and had a very good APS/TAC season as a result.

Pulled out all stops to get drafted, and continues to get everything out of himself as an AFL player.

Hopefully Ned gets on a VFL list or plays with his mates at Old Scotch.
