AFL Grand Final 2024 AFL Grand Final - Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions

We have been top 4 in 4 of the past 5 seasons. We've had the opportunity to get plenty of finals experience. Unlike Brisbane who have become hardened and are now a great finals team, we continue to wilt under the pressure of the occasion and are if anything actually getting worse at playing finals by the year.

This won't be popular but until the entire club collectively looks at itself in the mirror and says 'we are a loser club' and then resolves to do something about it, nothing will change. And that is irrespective of what happens with Hinkley.

This is the crucial difference.

Koch, Richardson, Davies, Cassisi, Wines, Rucci, Curtin, Kornes, Dwayne, and a frightening number of other Port people up and down the chain are more than happy to stand on the laurels of near enough being good enough.

It’s as if they can’t wait to find an excuse and tell a sob story from the perspective of a snivelling underdog that has no business competing at the pointy end, regardless of trifling realities such as draft/trade-capital and resource expenditure, ladder position, home ground advantage, and red hot favouritism.

• Little club from Alberton.
• The fans don’t understand how hard it is.
• Best list ever!/List is no good¡
• When he arrived.
• ‘We Exist To Win Premierships’ is unrealistic.
• How quickly they forget.
• Injuries/suspensions.
• There were TARPS on the SEATS.
• More than a few clubs would kill to be in our position!
• It’s not the SANFL anymore.
• Successful year in terms of win/loss.

Ken having the hide to sell the “pretty brave” narrative as we watch Brisbane stroll away with the flag despite a cavalcade of setbacks, is the purest microcosm of everything that’s wrong with Port’s approach versus elsewhere.

We would not have come close to Brisbane. No answer for Joe and he would have Destroyed us.

Neale is super classy and I think their forwards, Mids, Rayner, Ashcroft and Zorko would have killed us. We need new direction and some good drafting if not for 25, for 26.

Just finished watching the game and the professionalism of fagin is miles ahead of Hinkley.

Brisbane have assembled an elite list by various avenues including the luck of excellent father sons and the academy benefits, good drafting with Dunkley Daniher Cameron etc, plus having an experienced core of low drafts coming thru from there time at the bottom
I Think they are possibly the most deserved premiers. I saw it coming from 2017.

Raynor and Mcluggage were on point.
Drafting was on point.
Attitude, professionalism is top level.

all that hard work and a little bit of luck. IIRC GWS should have finished them.

We would melt like ice cream under a scorching Summer afternoon sun if we happened to be in the GF. It would have been even uglier than it actually was.

It would trigger 2007-GF PTSD in every single Port person, even in those who didn’t follow the club back then. We actually escaped from worse losing in Sydney.

...

Koch: Shows glimpses but largely has no idea
Richardson: no idea
Davies: failed cricketer, no idea
Cassisi: experienced success as the 22nd player picked...
Wines: daddy donuts career player, no idea.
Rucci: self interest, treated with disdain by actual winners
Curtin: lol
Kornes: probably has more idea than the rest but also more self interest than the rest
Dwayne: played in a few bridesmaid teams, no idea

The biggest disappointment is still those being the loudest voices in an era where everyone has a voice and a platform. Tredrea had his say, very diplomatically, but now he cannot as he's working in the inside. Ginniver has been disappointing, all the Cahill's and Williams's have been disappointing... As a club and culture it's absolutely gutting that almost no personalities who have experienced the success and have high expectations of what is possible to achieve have been completely absent at worst and on radio silence at best, allowing the narrative of what Port Adelaide is capable of to be completely hijacked.

2007 will never be beaten I fear, no matter how shit we are. These days the other team will begin lairising and having fun. Geelong were absolutely ruthless that day and played like their life depended on it til the final siren. Nobody was out there having fun until it went. There's been plenty of opportunities to better it since, but culture has changed. Mick Malthouse only a few years later talks about how he send his full back to full toward for the last QTR when his Collingwood were smashing St Kilda. Geelong 2007 would never have contemplated such tomfoolery.

That, and now any team being badly beaten will attempt to shut the game down, either at the contest with numbers around the ball, or by flooding defence.

While this is true, there is also no doubt that:
1. Hinkley is one of the biggest pushers of loserism throughout the club.
2. The clubs ongoing acceptance of and excuses for Kens failures send the biggest loser signal to everyone else year after year.

So while sacking Hinkley isnt the only thing we need to do, it remains the most important thing we need to do.

Percentage-wise, it has been beaten. GWS scored only 25 points in 2019.

It was a 89-point win, but ridiculous 456% for Richmond.

One way to understand Victorian percentage is by acknowledging that it simplifies the match score adjusting the losing score to “1” and then, the winning score, proportionally.

Hence:
2007 GF — 3.71 to 1
2019 GF — 4.56 to 1

You nailed it.
People believe dumping Hinkley and all will be good again are dreaming.
We need a culture change like you say and you won’t get it with Koch and co running the show.

You need to take step one before you can take step two.

We need to dump Hinkley, dump Davies, dump every other Hinkley, dump any player that can't get with the new program. Bring in people who aren't nepo-babies, who don't accept mediocrity, who respect the history, and who embrace challenge and expectation rather than running scared from it. It takes time but we will never even start on that journey if we can't take the first step.

Sam Newman has turned a flamethrower on the Sydney Swans calling for the players to be publicly “censured by the AFL”. “If anyone ever says, ‘You experience the hurt of losing — either in life or in sport — and that will stand you in good stead’ — it is the most overrated, ridiculous comment,” the former Geelong player said in a video shared on X. “They are a disgrace. They should be censured by the AFL for taking the piss out of this competition”.

I was just thinking "I wonder what Sam Newman is thinking".

Cheers for this.

If Port had somehow fluked their way into yesterdays gf against brisvegas the result would have been a bigger blood bath than what the actual bloods copped.

The winning culture of our club is completely donald ducked, it has had zero quality leadership both off and on field for years, eg the dual captains fiasco.

Not his fault that he was chosen of course, but an under sized low skilled 3rd tall defender who couldn't run out of sight in a London fog on a dark night like Tom Jonas would have had less than zero chance of being appointed captain in the Fos Williams or John Cahill eras, they would have been more concerned about keeping their place in the team.

Grand final day always the same - you start the day with an air of expectation and then it’s done and dusted and it all feels a bit meh. When’s the first test start?
Border Gavaskar trophy starts in November.

Though the TIO NTFL Premier League starts Friday if you still want that footy fix over summer.

The full game replays are streamed on the AFLNtv YouTube channel usually a couple of days after their scheduled start time or if you have a news.com subscription you can watch it live, not sure about Kayo.

All NTFL finals will be played live on 7+ in Feb just before the AFL season kicks off :)
