Assuming we get Duursma as part of the Zerk trade, I think we start as:

McGrath - McKay - Kelly
Ridley - Laverde - Redman
Durham - Parish - Martin
Perkins - Langford - Gresham
Menzie - Wright - Stringer
Goldstein - Merrett - Shiel
Duursma - Caldwell - Setterfield - Bryan
Heppell

By the bye I'm hoping for:

McGrath - McKay - Cox
Ridley - Baldwin - Redman
Durham - Parish - Martin
Hobbs - Langford - Gresham
Menzie - Wright - Stringer
Draper - Merrett - Shiel
Duursma - Caldwell - Setterfield - Bryan
Perkins
Interested in why you don't think Hobbs will start the year - won't last the season, fitness wise?

Someone has to miss out, but it's hard to see who. Caldwell and Setterfield are better defensively mostly.

I honestly don't see why anyone would take Durham away from the wing. He doesn't have the weapons to be a half back and is your prototype defensive wing as quite often he covers the half backs man as they're streaking up the field.

He, Martin and Duursma will be a good rotation through there.

I agree, but I'm putting Martin in the middle and having Tsatas rotate through the wings. While he is expected to become inside mid I think another season working on his running capacity and holding shape on the wing before he gets too serious in the gym will be good for him.

Nope. We have a wing rotation that's good. Set and forget.

Martin wants to play mid, eDPS thinks he is going to be a good mid and we've picked up another winger. Having three men run the km that a winger should across the centre line and a medium forward (Langford) also capable of running those km on the half-forward line means that we should be able to either outnumber opponents at contests or find free players in red time as fatigue sets in. The four of them also mean we have a lot of marking options between the arc as well as chipping in front of contests at both ends of the ground. I'd like to include Perkins and Cox as half-forwards and half-backs as well.

Hopefully by the end of the season it looks something like this. (Age at the start of next season in brackets)

McGrath (25) McKay (26) Ridley (25)
Redman (26) Reid (22) Durham (22)
Martin (23) Setterfield (26) Duursma (23)
Gresham (26) Jones (23) Caldwell (23)
Davey (20) 2MP (27) Langford (27)
Draper (25) Merrett (28) Parish (26)
Hobbs (20) Perkins (22) Bryan (22) Tsatas (19)

Emg: Cox (22) Menzie (21) Stringer (30) Shiel (31)
Thats a lot of players hitting their prime years.

I know we haven't had much luck, but if Brad Scott can get the best of this talented list maybe we can reach a higher level next year.

Ridley McKay Laverde
Redman Reid McGrath
Duursma Parish Durham

Agree. No point messing with a strong wing rotation. All three can also spend a small percentage forward at times.

Tsastas is not a winger . He needs to be developed as a midfielder as that is what he is . If that is more VFL than AFL then so be it. Playing and learning another spot at the top level is not good for him . My opinion of course.

I could easily see Wiedemann playing CHB in round 1. Reid does not have the runs on the board to command CHB until he does it at VFL level to a good standard.

I'd be hoping that Baldwin gets a start before Weid.

Duursma- setterfield - martin
Caldwell - Langford - gresham
Stringer - Wright - menzie
Goldstein - merrett - parish

agree, but i see their secondary positions as follows when rotated out:
  • Martin: mid/HF
  • Duursma: HF
  • Durham: HB

I also fear our HBF depth will be severely tested in 2024. Hind I expect to fall away, Heppell admirable in 2023 but question if he'll continue that form into 2024, Laverde is just ok, Kelly an ordinary ball user / decision maker, who else is there after Redders if Pidge is the lockdown small?

Coming up with the below, I can see why Dodoro tried so hard to retain M'Assimo. If Hind does fall away and then we are left with Pidge and Redman as the only AFL-level backs with leg speed. That may mean Durham gets more minutes at HBF.

This is where my thinking is currently at ....

Round 1
B McGrath McKay Laverde
HB Redman Ridley Heppell
C Martin Merrett Duursma
HF Caldwell Jones Gresham
F Langford Wright Menzie
Foll Goldstein Parish Hobbs
I/C Setterfield Stringer Durham Bryan
Sub Perkins
Em Tsatas Cox Baldwin

Mid-season
B McGrath McKay Reid
HB Redman Ridley Heppell
C Martin Merrett Duursma
HF Caldwell Jones Gresham
F Langford Wright Menzie
Foll Draper Parish Hobbs
I/C Setterfield Stringer Cox* Durham
Sub Perkins **
Em Goldstein A Davey Baldwin/Laverde

Best 22 changes
In: Draper, Cox, Reid
Out: Goldstein, Laverde, Bryan

* I'm making a BIG assumption that Cox finds a way in as a swingman. If he does, then i can't see us playing two rucks. Wright will be #2.

** harsh on Perkins, but as we balance out i think we might find it hard to find a spot for Gresham, Stringer and Perkins in the same team. Unless one of them plays as a pseudo CHF, but given I've gone with Wright at the second ruck, I doubt we can afford to sacrifice Jones or Weideman for that second tall role.

Cox v weid for me.
Do not think Cox has proven he can play CHB either . Wiedemann has actually had the best VFL form plying CHB. Like Reid I would like to see Cox find a bit of decent form. Not ruling it out but certainly not solidly in my side yet.

I’m surprised to see duursma in every best 22. I expect him to play a lot of games because he is definitely thereabouts, but best 22 is supposed to be the pie in the sky ideal. Ideally we don’t have a spot for him if the team gets back to where they were first half of this year. It seems to me people are putting him in the side based on form from 3 years ago which is kind of leaving the realms of optimism and heading into fantasy.

Probably not best 22 as much as "my ideal" 22 come mid season.

This is how I'd like to see the team line up by round 10 an beyond. (Form & fitness permitting)

C: MARTIN MERRETT DUURSMA
HF: STRINGER JONES GRESHAM
F: LANGFORD WRIGHT MENZIE
R: DRAPER SETTERFIELD PARISH
INT: PERKINS CALDWELL TSATAS HOBBS

I tend to agree with that.

Part of me wonders if Jones might evolve into the person who plays the thankless “decoy” wing role.

He’s got a decent tank and was happy to do the team first running thing last season at the start. He’s best in a contest as the 3rd man up and can slot a goal if he finds himself swapped into the forward line.

Realistically he’d be playing there in the VFL. (Which would also open up space for one of Wied/Baldwin/Laverde to play CHF/FF at VFL level in a healthy side

We will know what plans they’ve got for Cox in 24 within the first month of preseason starting

That's not the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Heck I'm half-way convinced that's what he was doing at the start of this year, what they call 'high half forward' (which seems to be the inverse of an offense-only half-back)

What makes you think Reid can hold down CHB? In three years he’s shown absolutely nothing, apart from being injury prone and slow. IF he can put some games together and get continuity he may come into consideration, but he’s coming from a long way back. Cox and Jones really aren’t far in front of him either.
All I ever hear about is if these blokes can get over their injuries! It’s a big IF
