That's not the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Heck I'm half-way convinced that's what he was doing at the start of this year, what they call 'high half forward' (which seems to be the inverse of an offense-only half-back)

I always thought HHF was a ball chasing mid/HF and your “Decoy/defensive wing” would be the player who would always switch away from the ball as the Attacking HB or HHF would attack the ball and your decoy wing would move into the space they left open.

So in many ways it’s using 1 thankless wing role to free up 2 active users at HB/HF vs the traditional active wing role where the HB and HF would rotate into that space and be more passive space holders

Prefer Jones as a CHF who leads up to half back than a winger. He has a tank but not the run down speed needed to close an opposing winger.

See if your playing a decent zone he doesn’t need that “rundown speed” as if the player runs past his zone it’s the next player who can come up and stop him.

Plus Jones marking would make up for the occasional run past

We will know what plans they’ve got for Cox in 24 within the first month of preseason starting
We should but unless he is having the greatest preseason ever I would like him to start in said position in the VFL and actually start tearing it up and earning his spot. :)

I’m happy for that, as long as they don’t just move him around. Give him a position and then let him train the 1 role over the summer and then learn it in the vfl/ if his preseason is strong enough he starts in the afl.

Do not think Cox has proven he can play CHB either . Wiedemann has actually had the best VFL form plying CHB. Like Reid I would like to see Cox find a bit of decent form. Not ruling it out but certainly not solidly in my side yet.
no one really has.
McKay - Zerk - Baldwin would have been my rd.1 choice.

Perhaps it's Lav, but im not sure Lav and Baldwin play in the same side?

12 months ago I would've said Laverde easily. Not sure what happened in 2023 but he went backwards after a great couple of years prior.
Played injured a lot of the year .

Early crack at how the trades affect our best 22 ... I'm liking the depth we will have ...

Firsts :

B: McGrath McKay Laverde
HB: Ridley Reid Redman
C: Duursma Parish Martin
HF: Gresham Jones Hobbs
F: Stringer 2MP Langford
Foll: Draper Merrett Setterfield
B: Perkins Shiel Caldwell Durham
Sub : Hind

I would like to see Durham trialed as the 7th defender if we land Duursma. I think he could play in the Redman mold.

Seconds:

B: Kelly Baldwin ...........
HB: Cox Hayes Heppell
C: A. Davey Tsatas ...........
HF: Menzie Voss J.Davey
F: Goldy Weideman Guelfi
Foll: Bryan ........... ..........
B: Wanganeen Hunter ....... ...........

I presume Snelling with be delisted ... D'Ambrosio + BZT traded.

What a pack of spuds, I quit.

What makes you think Reid can hold down CHB? In three years he’s shown absolutely nothing, apart from being injury prone and slow. IF he can put some games together and get continuity he may come into consideration, but he’s coming from a long way back. Cox and Jones really aren’t far in front of him either.
All I ever hear about is if these blokes can get over their injuries! It’s a big IF
Exactly why I said at the top of my post that it's perhaps not the "best 22", but rather, my "ideal 22" come mid season.
I get the fact that Reid had a lot of work to do, but we can't argue the talent piece, he wouldn't have been pick 6 if he couldn't play football so huge upside there. Has also put some size on in the last 2 years, so just needs a consistent run at it and should be right to go. Jones likewise regarding talent, with him we've even seen it. It's the durability factor with those two, but I'll back them in to get through it.

Cox I can take or leave, have him as the sub for pure versatility, but happy to replace him with someone else.

Disagree. Wingers are the hardest to zone off and usually it results in someone running off their line repeatedly to man the next player in the chain until the opposition walk the ball through goal square for an uncontested goal

Picked with how I think the coaches will want to structure the side up

B Mcgrath mckay ridley
Hb Redman laverde (Baldwin) cox
C Martin hobbs durham
Hf Gresham langford caldwell
Ff stringer Wright menzie
R Draper merrett parish
B duursma Goldstein Perkins setterfield

Sub - heppell

I see Laverde named in most sides here - and agree - he's a warrior who gives his all every game.
But he's not without his limitations and I think now we have McKay Lavs spot will hopefully come under pressure from the likes of Baldwin/Weideman/Cox or even Reid (if he can ever get his body right)

Lots of options with our lineup in 2024 - this could work;-

Ridley McKay McGrath
Redman Lav(Baldwin) Hind
Martin Setterfield Durham
Perkins Langford Shiel
Draper 2MP Gresham

Goldstein Parish Merrett

Caldwell Hobbs Duursma Stringer
Menzie

B- McGrath McKay Ridley
HB- Redman Reid Durham
C- Martin Parish Duursma
HF- Perkins Jones Shiel
F- Gresham Wright Langford
FOLL- Draper Caldwell Merrett
I/C- Hobbs, Stringer, Setterfield, Cox
Sub- Tsatsas

Emerg- Baldwin, Menzie, Goldstein, Hind

HF- Perkins Jones Shiel
F- Gresham Wright Langford
FOLL- Draper Caldwell Merrett
I/C- Hobbs, Stringer, Setterfield, Cox
Sub- Tsatsas

Emerg- Baldwin, Menzie, Goldstein, Hind
One ruck? Not sure Draper/Wright will be the go in 2024, we will need Goldy or Bryan as a second ruck.

Whatever happens it’s pretty cool that there’s now 10+ VFL players who are capable AFL players

That’s decent depth

B - A McGrath B McKay J Ridley
HB- M Redman Z Reid N Cox
C - N Martin D Parish Z Duursma
HF - B Hobbs H Jones A Perkins
F - K Langford P Wright J Gresham
R - S Draper Z Merrett J Caldwell

Reid named to play unless injured🤞🏻, otherwise Laverde comes in.
Was unsure on a backs rotation for the bench, possibly Heppell in some where.
