If Smillie was an elite contested mark, he would be the best young player of the last 20 years, better than Harley Reid, JHF

Focus on what he can do, not what he might be able to do
I didn't discount at all what he can do.. Simply said it's a shame it's not one of his strengths.

I also didn't state he needed to be an elite contested mark.

I recognise he's a a great talent and he's my preferred pick for 6, for what it's worth.

Bahahah I am loving the melts at rumouring we will take Allan at 6. I hope it happens just so everyone can complain about their really important informed opinions and recruiting expertise
All that we fans can generally go by are highlights, the games we've watched here and there, and the phantom drafts. We're allowed to form hopes and opinions based on those.

When we are frothing over the gun VIC kids that we can take with our crazy draft hand, and then get told we might pick a somewhat unknown WA boy when we've just lost two WA kids, of course we're gonna worry. We're excited for Smillie, Smith or Langford at 6 and then we might get... Bo Allan? Who no one else seemingly wants that early in the draft...

We could have had Heppell years ago and instead drafted a small WA midfielder way ahead of where he was projected. Look how that turned out. Heppell wasn't great the last few years but his best was way better than Conca's.

I hate Richmond (Francis Jackson?) curveballs.

You're basically saying you value your opinion, formed mostly from highlights videos, over the men whose full time jobs are to study these players, who have the track record from drafting our recent dynasty.

Bo Allan has been a potential top ten all year, don't know why you're saying he's unknown. And you're saying you would rather not pick up another Bolton or Baker? Get real.

Side note, Conca wasn't a bust, he played more games than the average top ten pick, and phantoms had us taking Polec. Conca was cruelled by injuries.

If Allan is who we take at 7, and the talk is we really want smillie also. Could there be a chance of a pick slide with saints? It has been reported before.

I think a slide from the Saints is odds on if they take Tauru at 7.

It won't be sliding back to 10 or 11, because we don't have the assets to facilitate it. The Saints want to split 8 but only if they get 2 x 1st round picks back, so going from 8 to 10 would see us giving up say pick 23, too expensive for us.

They might be tempted with 23 & 20 though. Would leave us with 1-6-8-10-11 and there's a world where we land...

Pick 1: Lalor
Pick 6: Smillie
Pick 8: Allan
Pick 10: Lindsay
Pick 11: J Whitlock
Pick 18: Oliver
Pick 24: Faull

Agreed but he doesn't have his midfield craft, composure etc etc

You probably read this as your always on draft board too, but earlier in year or maybe last year, I remember reading one of the WA draft watchers suggest that WA prospects are miles behind their Victorian counterparts in terms of development as they just don’t have the coaching and pathways we have in vic.

Interesting thought when considering a Bo Allen pick.

Can someone who knows more than the masses sell Bo Allan to me?

I’m trying not to be negative but I hate in between players. Is he a midfielder or is he a defender? Why did he only average 11 touches in the WAFL? What are his strengths? What are his weaknesses?

It is giving me flashbacks to when we reached for Conca.

It's a really good point. The only thing I'd add, at least in Bo's case, is that he did play a bunch of senior WAFL games this year which I imagine may be a step-up from TAC Cup in terms of playing against more mature (and possible more skilled) players.

People already writing Bo Allan off.

If we draft him STFU and give the kid a chance.

If he was from VIC half of you would be noshing yourself off over him.
lmao that's just non-vic cope

I would be just as annoyed if he was vic since I don't care about allan's "go home factor"

I just remember smillie being able to manhandle allan multiple times when they played each other

but I guess with baker & graham leaving we're down a couple of sub 20 touch mids so I can see the vision for pick 6 of the draft

Not sure our recruiters play those sorts of games early. They wouldn’t risk losing their favoured player. The only reason they pick Allan at 6 is if he’s rated higher on our board.

What if they rate both equally. It’s genuinely 50/50 in our ratings between Smilie and Allan.

Was it written in the form of a wah wah wah Vic's get better resources than us?

I'm not saying I value my opinion over theirs at all, I'm just saying we're allowed to have an opinion. What's the point of being on a forum to discuss things at all then? We have zero close-up involvement in anything related to football, but we discuss things based on what we do know regardless. Same applies to the draft, we're allowed to have opinions and desires. I worry about Bo Allan at 6 because he is a WA boy, hasn't really been mentioned a whole lot compared to the VIC boys, and we could miss out on Smillie who was touted as pick 1 for a lot of the year as a result.
I think it's a valid concern. The go-home factor is a huge worry especially when you have a gun VIC kid likely available at the same pick.

We've seen our own recruiting team make plenty of blunders despite their inside knowledge, so they make mistakes don't they? I worry Bo Allan would be one of those mistakes, fully aware of the fact I only have access to highlights.

Allan at six. I think I'm going to have a panic attack.

Ok watching the WA v Country game. Allen and Lalor on each other in the first. Lalor miles off, doesn’t even look fit, but then does something where you think nice. Allen, damn, surely we are foxing at 6, just seems an ok player that makes mistakes.
Travaglia, great player, take him before Allen easily, heart and soul.
Faull is very smart.
One thing, there are going to be players in the 15-30 mark that are going to leave some of the top dozen for dead. There are some elite traits all though that range. Wouldn’t be surprised if some teams make a wtf selection very early.
Take Tauru at 6 too, he is elite

Back to the second half.

This is the worry with us, especially since recruiting has moved back into the hands of FJ and mostly Blair, given Toce sadly passed away. We like to reach and be obscure. And we often whiff as a result.
