How far back we going? Not like we've had too many of late

Still I'd take McVeigh, Fosdike, Crouch, Bolton and even Rohan.

Rocca and Grant were good players.

Yeah Stephens was a whiff but Logan will play out as a Swan
Nic Fosdike was SO good

I think ppl also need to consider that most likely from 27-29

The drafts will be compromised

aside from this year being a good year potentially

I think many clubs are preparing from current draft for the compromised drafts coming

Compromised is putting it lightly.

May as well wipe those years out Richmond tried to speed up the process but unless they pick perfectly they are ****ed for a good decade or so.

Clubs like Carlton/Port/Collingwood are looking stuffed they would hope to grab a flag or two to justify the upcoming lean years.

It's a shame we can't draft Leonardo Lombard. He would be ideal if we ever needed a ceiling mural painted at Swans HQ or to conquer the entire Western Sydney region through a bloody military campaign.
Some great names in this draft.

Loch MacTaggart, 184cm defender, would draft him so we can call him Lockdown Lochie and to offset the loss of McAndrew

Elwood Peckett

Jack Ough, though pronounced Oh (despite national champs commentator only realising that into the 2nd of a game)

Tom Morris reporting we have met with Ben Paton from St Kilda - was going ok a couple of years ago

I actually saw this on a random Facebook post and assumed they’d confused us with GWS

Haven’t seen enough of him to comment but he seems the type we’d recruit for a gap we seemingly have, but Horse would keep him banished in the VFL without giving him a chance

I hope you didn’t say Rohan

Apologies, you're correct.

But if 9 touches and 20 hitouts is what passes as a good game for Stretch, he's nowhere near Ladhams who averaged 15 touches and 20 hitouts in 2022 and 2023.
I still think Ladhams a waste of space. He is about as thick as a short plank. If he isn't, then how come he continues to get suspended, even in the reserves

The Age has put out a mock draft;

Our picks;
23 Jesse Dattoli
Northern Knights/Vic Metro
Midfielder/forward, 179cm, 7/8/2006
Talent League stats (avg): 23.1 disposals, 11 contested possessions, 1.7 goals
Dattoli is a confident and competitive kid – and that has shone through in club interviews, with a mixed response to it, but more believe it is a positive, particularly given what it takes to succeed at his height. A natural footballer, it would not surprise if Dattoli was snapped up in the teens. He will spend time in the midfield and up forward in the AFL, with his improved endurance, toughness and power combining to make him a good stoppage player, and he is a good mark for his size.

Note; Berry, Hotton and Hannaford previously 'selected'.

26 Matt Whitlock
Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country
Tall forward/defender, 198cm, 16/5/2006
Talent League stats (avg): 14.2 disposals, 5 marks, 1.9 goals
The second of the Whitlock twins is a couple of centimetres shorter, but proved himself more than capable at both ends this year. Like his brother, he is athletic, works hard and is a good mover for his size – demonstrated by his 20m sprint time
(3.05 secs) Whitlock’s key-position appeal for clubs is obvious, even beyond his height: He kicked multiple goals eight times in the Talent League, but his season also includes three games with four or more intercept marks. His set-shot kicking could improve.
Note; Faull, Trainor, Shanahan & Jack Whitlock previously 'selected'.

Pick 40 Charlie Nicholls
Central District/South Australia
Key forward, 197cm, 8/6/2006
SANFL U18s stats (avg): 15 disposals, 7.5 marks, 2 goals
Nicholls was viewed as a potential first-rounder as recently as before the under-18 championships, but is now more likely to be taken in this draft range – or even later. He is lightly framed, will take time to develop and might never be a No.1 forward, but there is potential here. Nicholls is quick
(2.96 20m at combine) and marks the ball well, and a club that is willing to be patient with him might be rewarded.

Hamish Davis went at 32, the much discussed Hynes at 28, Mraz 30, Barat 31 and Sims at 34.

WA have named their summer training squad (starting prep for next year's U-18 National Championships).
42 players named, incl 3 underagers.
None have the surname of Warner.

Pistol Pete is certainly no scholar, but he's a very capable (and contracted) back-up ruck.

He also seemed to pull his head in a bit this season.

We'll be a lot better off calling on him when Grundy's not available next year than Green or McAndrew.

Sounds like he's (Oliver) got a great attitude, work ethic. Depends on how he's interviewed.

Plus they've drafted a couple of WA kids, a Tasmanian, and a Vic Metro player in the last 2 years, so I think they back themselves.
We've just seen the pull of the Victorian $$$ on even Academy talent at the Giants. They don't have a good record of keeping Vic Metro talent.

If Dattoli can play as an inside mid, not the worst draft.

Not sure we pick up an extra KPD actually with Cochran joining Snell, Edwards as developing types and having 2 mature agers in the VFL. I think we aim for Snell and Edwards to be ready in 2026 and maybe a mature ager and a draftee to join next off season. And if we don't see Whitlock as a KPD, wouldn't be picking up Nicholls later.

In terms of pure KPDs would rather pull the trigger on Harry O'Farrell early, or get Clancy Dennis at our 3rd pick (with M Whitlock, Kayle Gerreyn or Thomas Sims as a KPF earlier, or just go with Davis).

Noting I can't actually read the article.

Yep. Matt could be forward or back. No reason not to start him out up front.
Dattoli looks potentially a good player but I would prefer a decent medium forward or mid with that third pick.
Someone with a decent frame.

For mids with a bit of height - Jack Ough at our 2nd (194), Luke Urquhart at our 3rd (190), maybe Cooper Hynes at our 1st though more mid/fwd (190)

For mids that are solid units already - Phoenix Hargrave (181), Cody Anderson (183) and Hugh Boxshall (187) should all be around at pick 40, maybe Boxshall goes earlier

For Med Forwards around pick 40 onwards - Archer Day-Wicks, Nathaniel Sulzberger, Ned Bowman with Day-Wicks a bit more solid

This is offensive and he should probably be disqualified from the draft.
You’re probably too young to remember Billy Birmingham (aka the 12th man).

But Jack Ough gave me cause to reminisce:

“Pearce Off Jack”

“What did you say?”

“Pearce Off Jack, Gibbs On”

“Don’t tell me to Pearce off, f***knuckle”….

Those over the age of 40 will know what I’m talking about.

Doing a few different draft scenarios for us, fwiw. The assumption behind all of them are Cochran going somewhere between 45 and 55, with us still having a pick somewhere in the 60s or so (unsure how many picks will be used).

1730470502781.png
This first scenario is probably my #1 to cover various needs.
  • Davis the best medium forward available (Hynes maybe slightly more a mid/HFF).
  • Sims is a fwd/ruck, but one of his strengths is one of our weaknesses, contested marking, which none of the other key forwards around are known for. If mobile types are OK, Faull swapping with Davis or Matt Whitlock are options too.
  • Phoenix Hargrave (181cm) is a no-frills contested mid with clean hands, decent up forward. Played 6 SANFL games.
  • Loch MacTaggart (184cm), as well as one of the best names at the draft, is one of very few small/medium defenders who are actually mentioned as lockdown options. He may get to the rookie draft, may not even be drafted at all, but this is a need for us, so willing to take a punt.
  • Kobe Ryan (183cm) is a 20 year old mid from West Adelaide who after missing being drafted, won the SANFL Breakthrough Player Award last year and this year made the SANFL Team of the Year averaging 26 disp, 9 tackles, 6.6 clearances.
1730471422829.png
This next one prioritises the best KPF likely to be available (though Jack Whitlock might be there). Davis again. Boxshall (187cm) as a bigger mid who can spread as well (Hargrave feeds others). Angove as a decent half/small forward option, though touch and go whether he'll be available. MacTaggart could be there at the end of the rookie draft tbh.

1730471784439.png
This one is all over the place. I've relented and prioritised a small forward in Dattoli who can go into midfield. We've also decided Cochran isn't enough in the tall defender market and hedged bets with Matt Whitlock who could play at either end. Given Whitlock might end up down back, I've gone Bailey McKenzie as a 192cm forward who can push up as a link player, but also kicked 6 in a Coates League prelim (for 27 goals in 10 games). Tom Murphy grabbed as a mature ager to provide some extra midfield depth in the haul (alongside Dattoli's cameos) and I've Loched in MacTaggart again (seriously have not found other one-on-one small/medium defenders).

1730472454866.png
This last one is the Kinnear Special. He's / I've decided Oliver can become the next Cunningham, despite currently playing half back (with a combative and courageous streak). Kennedy (180cm 2-way mid) has been swooped on before others can get him in the 30s. This leaves us with some more speculative KPFs at Pick 40, but worth a shot. Sulzberger (187cm) can kick some goals as a medium forward with a decent frame, but also spend plenty of time in midfield. Unwin is a mid/small forward whose goalkicking suffered this year spending time away from the F50 and some awful accuracy, but the best of the remaining small forwards possibly at this point.

Like 2 and 3.
