David Wirrpanda was playing AFL at 16. Just sayin'. Timmy Watson at 15. If you're good enough...

In the end I don’t think there’s a need to risk it. We’ve seen how many young draftees enter the league making more impact than ever before. They have really good development and training already so I think there’s not really a massive need for it. Plus he still has next year to play some VFL games.

With that logic, Will and Levi Ashcroft should have been playing for us when they were 12 ;)

Tracking like we will be starting from a very low base this trade/draft period... after Round 6 >

I'd hate to lose Dev, but would WCE's 31 be reasonable - I mean I'd love to get 20, but that will unlikely happen.
IMO pick 31 would be the absolute top end we could get for Dev, unless he starts playing regular seniors this season, and if that's the case he would likely be staying a Lion.

We could point out our history of trading for future picks and arrange for their future first (ok more likely future second) and see how superstitious they are.

We’ll be lucky to get pick 50 from West Coast for Dev.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they walk him through to the PSD.

West Coast are most likely going to want to take 5 picks to the draft, and they’ll be hoping to use their 5th pick on their NGA kid, but there’s a fair chance he gets bid on before pick 40, so they won’t be able to match.

And short of trading out Barrass or Ryan, have no way of generating any extra high picks.

From a list management perspective, if I were West Coast, I’d offer pick 58 as a starting point.

We can gnash our teeth all we want at such an offer, but we’re bargaining from a position of weakness, and we don’t hold any cards.

Maybe if both Prior and Robertson get traded (don’t like that option mind you), we could get West Coast to give us both Pick 31 and Pick 58 that way and then possible trade that to another club for a pick in the late teens or early twenties possibly?

Saying that though, I don’t have much background information on this years draft and is probably the least interested I have been under Fages watch, in terms of what players are available around that mark.

I have a feeling Prior will stay and Dev will go.

It’s looking like a very deep draft. Unless a team needs to trade out a pick due to matching a father son or academy kid, it’s hard to see teams wanting to trade out of the top 30.

Maybe if we traded our future first for a current and future second round picks.

Surely we will need to keep our future first for Levi?

With Tassie coming in, and potentially impacting drafts from as early as 2025, I’m very much in favour of trading future picks forward in to the current year, especially if we have good father son or academy prospects in the next year’s draft.

So if we can trade our future first, for a mid to late 20’s pick this year and a future second round pick next year, I would be very keen to do that.

As we’ve seen recently, teams will still offer a good points upgrade for second round picks, and if we hold two next year, plus our third and fourth round picks, we should be able to match bids on two players.

Silly Nuggo... there is history.

Because James Aish wanted to go home to South Australia and Mitch Clark wanted to go home to Western Australia.

Looks like Jed Walter is hovering around 10 to 15 mark with lot of other names are rising in draft board. If Gold Coast ends up with a pick around 5 to 8, they might try and bump it up to get one more elite prospect before getting Jed. May be trading their first with our future first + points isn't the only option like I thought. Damn you Gold Coast, this was the year I was expecting finals from them.

I’d offer Gold Coast a live draft night trade.

Our future first round pick + our two current third round picks & our fourth round pick, for their second round pick + future second round pick & future third round pick.

Means we have to take four picks to the draft, and only plan on using two.

The trade would in effect generate two new, end of draft picks for us, so if we hoped to match a late bid on one of our academy players this year, we’d just have to hope they’re bid on after pick 56, because teams don’t need points to match bids from pick 56 or later.

What’s the academy situation for us this year, is there any players in that academy we could look at with our later picks or are we just gonna chose two players with our picks in the 20s & 30s?

It’s pretty hard for me to say.

Quite a few of the QAFL guys rate a few of our academy kids, particularly the bottom age ones, but our academy team keeps being beaten badly.

I don’t know if we lack talent across the ground, or if it’s the coaching, but beyond Marshall winning a heap of the ball inside, few players stand out.

I liked what I saw last year of Billy Richardson playing in defence, but he’s playing forward this year, and our tall forwards are generally starved of decent ball coming in to them.

Maybe they are hiding Richardson in the forward line because we want a key defender on the cheap.

I think the academy getting beaten badly is not much of a concern, the bottom half of the side is probably of low standard, shouldn't stop us producing the occasional draftable talent.

On paper the academy seems to be producing it's fair share of AFL listed players, just on our list currently we have Harris Andrews, Eric Hipwood, Jack Payne, Keidean Coleman, Blake Coleman, Carter Michael.

Off the top of my head on other lists are Noah Cumberland, Mabior Chol, Samson Ryan, Ben Keays.... I am sure there are others but I can't be bothered digging deeper ATM.

I did look at I think in the off season. We seem to develop more total talent that plays at least 1 game than most of the other academies. But we dont seem to develop as much top end talent (or at least high draft picks)
