Gilder had a hair cut but still has a bit of the Bruce Doull build about him.

Interesting hear them say on Midweek Tackle that apparently this years crop is the most even in a long time (feel these sorts of comments are rolled out every year) and a team that has the fifth or sixth pick may have have who they draft as the number one such is the fact there is t a clear pick one two or three.

Let’s hope Levi slides a bit unless of course one club just bids on him to make us pay such is the draft tactics of various clubs.

Interesting Gillet in there from Lions, but not Gilder.

Gilder played 4 x Allies games and was very good in 3 of them.

Gillet played 1 and wasn't great, but had a good VFL game on the weekend.

no McFayden or Gallop either, not even for their local combines.

Having seen plenty of these invite lists over the years, I'll highlight the key part on their rookie profiles as to why one got an invite and the other didn't:

Ryan Gilder. height: 191cm
Tom Gillett. height: 201cm

AFL clubs are a lot more interested in finding out more about a marginal Qld player if they've got an unteachable attribute like that height.

From what I have read both players have AFL qualities but Gillett has the greatest upside. Gilder projects as a backman who can play as a Lockdown backman against the 3rd tall forward. While Gillett has excellent athletic qualities who may eventually play as a ruck/ forward but who knows could play as a full back as well. He won’t be the first key position forward who ends up playing in the backline. I believe we already have a few of those.

Gillet played VFL on the weekend. Interestingly he was competitive in the ruck, but only took 1 grab and kicked 3 goals, all of them crumbing goals like he is a 201cm Charlie Cameron!

Excellent, we need someone to play that role with Charlie moving into the ruck.

The Age on this year's draft. Lascroft at 2, Marshall at 28! No other Lions academy players mentioned

There are two consensus views on this year’s AFL draft class.
The first is it’s an exciting and very deep crop, and the second is there is no surefire No.1 selection, 12 months after Harley Reid was the clear standout prospect at the top of the draft.

Here are our top 30 prospects based on discussions with recruiters from 10 clubs, and factors including this year’s AFL under-18 championships, performance across all levels, potential, attributes, and injuries that may have impacted them.

2. Levi Ashcroft
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
Midfielder, 179cm, 18/12/2006
28. Sam Marshall
Sandringham Dragons/Allies
Midfielder, 185cm, 19/1/2006

I reckon Gillett is projecting as a 3rd rounder as well

Gillett.

The best your club can get.
Reckon draft haul of Ashcroft II, Marshall and one of Gillett / Gallop / Glider would satisfy most on here including myself.

Tbf, we have quite a few young FF/CHFs (most ain't 200cm+ besides Ryan) waiting in the wings in McLaughlin and Lloyd, as well as Morris currently playing but they all play different to how Daniher + Hipwood operate.

Would be nice to find another 200cm+ out there to replace Lane but given how difficult is to find genetic-type players of that height and who can play well, maybe the club would have to play a smaller F50 if Hipwood or Daniher got injured long-term.

Morris & McLaughlin has the potential to play CHF / FF if that happened mind you, while Lloyd feels like he is best suited to play as our 3rd tall. Plus, you have Rayner, Lohmann, Cameron and McCarthy (if back) that can play tall, if needed.

The club should be more worried over our KPDs given how injury-prone most of them are (especially Gardiner & Doedee).

Depends what the draft strategy is.

Gilder is the best of the lot outside Ashcroft and Marshall from the Lions cohort. He is ready made, athletically gifted, really competitive and hasn't scratched surface of his potential.

Gillet ang Gallop would be project talls, though Gallop is a bit short for true KPP, but his power and strength is something else - has shoulders like an olympic butterfly swimmer.

For lions, they could take Gillet next year as an overage draft pick, but the risk is someone else takes him (like what happened with Samson Ryan). My guess is he'll be drafted this year, but not by the Lions.

On another note, the Lions just had a few more picked in All Australian U15s. Impressively Max Boothey was selected, despite missing QLD selection, the others were Noah Rafter and Lachlan Ellen.

I watched every game of the carnival and can't for the life of me work out how they pick these sides though. Ellen and Taj Murray from the Suns both selected and didn't do a single thing that stood out. Boothey and Rafter though, very very impressive.

QLD selectors look silly not having Boothey, then seeing him named AA.

McLachlan is listed on our website as only 181cm tall, though draft sites have him at 185cm. Either way, that's not really CHF/FF height these days.

Do you reckon we won't match the bid? I think the club will prioritise Gillett due to his height, replacing Lane. Gilder would be replacing Lester, but Lester will be around another year, maybe the club takes the risk nobody will draft Gilder this year. Gallop could get picked by someone I guess, but this is a very good draft for KPPs so I doubt it.
