I'd be fine. You'd figure we'd be thereabouts again, probably matching someone (Annabelle) again, so ultimately just keep rolling it over.

You are absolutely correct, and we'd find a way to make it work, but it will cost us more to do obviously. Might end up having to trade future picks in to deal with a deficit in 2025. Point being, Dom Ambrogio getting to work and generating us the points is the most important thing between Sunday and the draft in November.

I'm just an average punter in terms of assessing draft talent, but I'm just very very high on Annable given what I saw in the championship games I watched. He didn't get a heap of touches but his ability at clearance was really, really impressive. Think he's a perfect addition to come in from 2026 if he keeps his form up, and Marshall is going to run into a massive logjam for wing spots with Fletcher and Berry.

I'd love to have Marshall on the list obviously, but think this is more of a conversation this year than it has been previously. If only we didn't trade our future second for Brandon Ryan!

I wouldn’t be too concerned at all with acquiring enough points for Ashcroft and Marshall. Previous years its been a pretty easy task for list managers to achieve, especially regarding downgrading picks.

There seems to be a bit of talent on the move already, we will be able to leverage our first rounder on a few potential deals to pocket handy points.
Also, with the uncertainty of the future matching, there might be more of a premium on future pick, where we will get good return for our F2 if needed.
I’m not sure what you mean by, “with the uncertainty of future matching”.

We know what the new dvi and discount is.

We know it will be harder to match very top end kids, and that later picks don’t carry the same value any more.

Just on next year, there are a lot of club tied kids, either academy or father sons. I’m not sure if there are any top end kids, maybe one of the GC kids, but I expect there to be a lot of club tied kids in the mid to late first round and second round.

Not sure Dom has to get to work between Sunday & the draft. Our first round pick is a valuable commodity that every club knows is available. Same with all clubs that have f/s or academy picks. Every club knows we're not going to use it, and every club without their own f/s or academy bid issues would want it. The only variable with ours right now is whether it's pick 17 or 18 (ignoring all the bid matching etc). I'm sure most if not all the work has already been mapped out with our trade partners for what is gong to happen.

The uncertainty I’m eluding to is we haven’t actually seen a trade period under these changes. While we can theorize about “the best way” to approach the changes, clubs will all have varying approaches. Until we can assess what actually works, it’s largely uncertainty IMO

We probably won't bid on Marshall if it puts us on deficit. But, the Lions list management team has had 12 months to plan for acquiring the required draft points to snag Levi/Marshall, we'll get it done.
I would rather have sam marshall than goddamn points, lol.

We haven’t left you much to work with Briztoon
Miss these from earlier in the year too:

People who know more than me can correct me if I'm wrong but the feeling is we'll do fine in this year's draft and after that it's going to get a whole lot harder.

So it's important that we hang on to any younger players with potential.

The Rorts will continue but they will be pricier, yes.

I briefly met WAshcroft in the lead up to the final. If anyone has seen Bill Burr talk about how Lance Armstrong was a psycho and that the world should be glad he devoted his maniacal attention to cycling instead of corporate finance/poisoning water wells etc then you would feel the same about WAshcroft.

The man is a football machine. No doubt or fear in his mind. Just a clean, clear laser like focus. He knows where he wants to be and is driven to get there. Before at the captains run he looked so locked in and ready. Then he goes out and wins that Norm Smith. We are so lucky to have him. I can't believe that we get a free kick at another Ashcroft and rejuvenate this list with 2 psycho midfielders.

Our challenge this year compared to 2022 is other clubs like GC and may be Essendon (NGA) are also hunting for points like us. The 2022 strategy of trading out first pick after the draft started so there is no cap on how many picks you exchange may have some challenges now.

If other clubs shop like us but stock up during trade time, I wonder where we will get a trading partner who is willing to swap with us after first round draft bell goes off. Might be a bit tricky this time.

We may have won 2023 as well if he was on the ground.

2025 looks pretty exciting with 2 x Ashcrofts and a Neale going through the middle.

And then you’ve still got Berry and Dunkley to lock down the other side. McCluggage on top just seems unfair. Such a good midfield.

Best part is we have won 1. All pressure is off. I believe this group may rise even further now that the "lack of premiership" knife isn't hanging over them anymore. Exciting times.

Theoretically, we should be considerably stronger next year. Of course that will be negated to some extent by everyone wanting to figure us out and knock us off. Even so, we should consider ourselves favs for the next 2-3 years. The challenge will also be to keep as much of our squad together as possible and that will be tough, we’ve got phenomenal depth, other teams know that now and will come asking to get some of them out.

Yep, the depth didn't exist 12 months ago but out of necessity we played kids and some of them went bang ! Now we are sitting on decent wealth of talent so we're bound to lose some next year.

Possible 2025 change of guard would be

Zorko -> Levi
Lester -> Doedee / Gardiner
Daniher/Fort -> Big O/Henry/Lloyd
McKenna -> Coleman

delist or trade would be Prior, Dev, Madden, Craven, Lane. Along with Lyons retirement.
