Again, not wanting to get too far ahead of myself, but I would recommend to anyone who registered for Cat 1 GF tickets to make accommodation bookings pronto.
You can do it through booking.com, and make sure that you book a room with free cancellation, in case we get done on Friday
I booked at Mercure Albert Pk this morning, 3 nights for $720, and I can cancel with no fee until next Wednesday. Already, this has gone up by a further $150. A lot of places are already booked out.
Yeah did this with a mate, booked a little further out in coburg for two nights for $360 free cancellation before 26th. Good idea posting this!

Only 4.4km from the MCG, or a short tram/bus trip and a shorter walk. But I don't know Melbourne well - does public transport operate all hours?

I lived in Docklands from 2011-2019 inclusive so I have a reasonable lay of the land.

Won't have a problem with public transport - it runs into the early hours of the morning. I hate their Myki system but it is what it is.

Albert Park is just a relatively isolated area of the city. Will be easy to catch a tram up St Kilda road to get to Flinders Street station and then you can just walk to the G from there. Will be able to soak up a fair bit of the action that way.

Excellent advice.

To be fair it's a generational thing here. I've attended SANFL GF's since the mid 80's and throughout that time and the 90's, it was literally a crowd made of Port supporters and then supporters of every persuasion going for whomever we were playing. The Port Vs the rest isn't just a saying, it was actually physically practiced.

That's why it is hilarious that when non-Port people talk about our Showdown rivalry, they talk about how they hate us based on that history, but yet then talk about PAFC 1997. In the same vein the non-Vics think the hatred is all based around the AFL entry and what happened then and after. They neglect that our football club had competed in half of the GF's ever played in the SANFL by the 90's. With a higher percentage than that if you neglect our 1800 days when we actually weren't as good. So they hate us because we were always god damn good.

Generations of being sick of Port beating you gets to you. So I'm not surprised it still lives on, despite how pathetic it is. I'd never even think to do that personally. I support Port, not 17 AFL sides.
I can remember attending the SANFL double headers at Football Park during the 1980's where Port were playing in the late game watching supporters from the two two teams playing in the early game going hard at it between each other only to then team up and support the team Port were playing in the later game. I could not understand but I was a youngster at the time.

I'll mention here again that I am looking into booking a private turboprop jet to do a fly in/fly out on the day.

Cost would be $1200pp return.

As the turboprop is a jet engine that drives a propellor (not a fan) it is a quick flight, about 1hr 5 mins.

Jet seats 9, corporate interior (it's not like a Cessna training plane).

FishingRick04 ElectricG El_Scorcho have expressed interest, I know this is all dependent on winning Friday and getting tickets.

But I would have to be confident on numbers by today to make a commitment.

If you're wanting to do the GF on the cheap, I assume the Overlander will run a special service like back in 2007

Overnight there Friday and overnight back the following day

It's brutal if you don't sleep well seated upright though

yeah I have a mate who lives in Horsham who I'll stay with on the Thursday night providing we win. I booked the week of the pre finals bye. Adelaide to Horsham by bus ($35), then from there to Melbourne by train on the Friday late morning ($7) then the reverse back on the Sunday, not bad for $84 round trip, thank you vline. Gotta get there first tho!

Oh dear, I remember that trip very well. Their general seating is not that great, worse than long haul airliners.

The Overland normally departs Adelaide on a Thursday morning (takes around 12 hours) and then returns on Friday but they may do something next week different. Who I work for supplies the locos and train crew but I have not been told any different.

What happens with the ticket allocation once two teams are eliminated from the finals this weekend?

Is there another round of ticket registrations to the GF because two groups of members are punted from the allocation?

The only train that goes to Horsham from Melbourne is the Overland. VLine Train only goes as far as Ararat from Melbourne.
You will be busing it from Horsham to Ararat at least then transferring to the train possibly.

They shouldn't need to. Each prelim finals club has had a chance for members toregister for tickets. come saturday night, the total pool of GF ticket ballots would consit of those members that registered from the two competing clubs - so unless those two clubs didnt exhaust the total allocation, that should be all she wrote.

My mate in Sydney I stayed with for the PF, is a Port interstate member, but also AFL member with Sydney Club Support, so that he can go watch Swans games - in the members area. He also bought a cheapie 5 game GWS membership. So he had 3 chances to get to the GF, and has gone every year since 2000 or 2001.

AFL Gold members with club support for Sydney and Brisbane had a 2 hour window to buy tickets first, before other AFL Gold members. He asked me if I knew how many of these AFL members for these 2 clubs there were and I said the last time the AFL published the break down of AFL members with club support was 2014 AFL Annual Report. So I looked it up on Saturday night for him as the window to buy tickets for him was 2pm EST Sunday.

In 2014 Brisbane had 460 AFL members and Sydney 832 and 48.3k had club support of 56.5k total AFL members. In 2024 there were 56.6k AFL members with club support so I said increase the Sydney and Brisbane total by 20% as well and you will be competing with about 1,500 people.

He had the barcodes of a couple of mates so they could sit together and he was all done by 2.13pm. Easiest he has has ever hunted down an AFL GF ticket included the other dozen years or so he has been a Gold AFL member.
