I’m not convinced Buckaroo will stay. In the Caulfield Cup, they really slowed down mid race which allowed him to conserve some energy.

If the Melbourne Cup is a sit and sprint, he should win. But if it’s a proper staying test, I have my doubts.

Yeah I was just going through the runners trying to find where the speed will come from. Just Fine? Anyone else?

That's pretty much it. Point King might go forward in the top few like in the Bart Cummings too. Not many on speed runners though and of them none that will want a strong tempo

Wouldn't have happened many times, I am talking about when their first appearance in a race is the Melbourne Cup.

Melbourne Cup Winners: 1st-Up Without Prior Run

2020: Twilight Payment (55.5kg)

2018: Cross Counter (51kg)

2017: Rekindling (51.5kg)

1993: Vintage Crop (55.5kg)

1983: Kiwi (52kg)

All of these winners got off the plane and ran in the Melbourne Cup and won it.

Doesn't happen often but it has happened, especially in the past 7 years.

I must admit, I do miss Bart Cummings' presence during the spring carnival (or at other times throughout the year). I know he's been gone since 2015 but racing in Australia doesn't really feel the same.

Buckaroo needs the tempo to feature just as much as he wants a slowly run race so it doesn't test his ability to run it out, it's a tough one.

He's a backmarker, they can't crawl up front, he won't get into the race.

Let's say they started coming over in '83, for the sake of the discussion.

5 times in 40 years and you're being asked to take 5-1.

Yeah, nah.

He led and won over a mile. Easily has the ability to sit more forward

For the sake of discussion should probably look to be a bit more accurate than that

I've just gone off what he's produced.

I know they don't win first up in Australia very often, I don't know how many have done it as favorite. We've seen some all time great flops in the Cup from horses with big reputations over the years, referencing those who started short in the market.

There have been plenty of years in that time with no horse fitting the criteria and also plenty more who ran top 4 suggesting they still ran well. Using just wins as the metric in a sample size that small not the best way to judge imo
