Noting that my suggestion regarding Taylor Adams was firmly tongue-in-cheek around the #11 jersey curse, nevertheless, the problem for GWS remains its inability to recruit mid-career players. Whatever the reason - and I think cost of living is the biggest contributing issue - we mainly get cast-offs. Even the guys who have been great for us (Mummy, Shaw, Stevie J, Griffen to a lesser extent) were generally in that position.

Looking around the competition, you're looking at guys like Daniels, Seb Ross and Riley Bonner as "maybe" recruits purely if they want to extend their career. Otherwise, GWS need to be in the ears of players - like other clubs are in the ears of ours - years in advance to persuade them to come to us. But money can't be the major attraction, making it difficult to persuade them.
I wonder if our loss affected Longmires decision to not select Adams.
Our loss was a reminder you just can't be sympathetic in selecting a finals team. Selecting an injured player cost us.
We ran alot in our final, but had 3 players not play 70 % gametime. No wonder the rest where stuffed.

Would Matthew Kennedy be looked at? I like what he’s done with his career. He wants to be played in the midfield rather than up forward. Could do with his contested ball winning.
Can't imagine we wouldn't, he's a local boy (Same junior club as Perryman). He'll probably get more attention and money from some of the vic clubs though.

Looking at the players who are out of contract this year, it's pretty slim pickings. No wonder Pez and Cheese are popular and being offered big $.

EH, Jarryd Lyons, Jaxon Prior, James Madden, Jack Martin, Reef McInnes, Will Setterfield, Nathan O'Driscoll, Mitch Hardie, James Willis, Ted Clohessy, Harry Morrison, Marty Hore, Curtis Taylor, Blake Drury, Francis Evans, Naoh Cumberland, Thomson Dow, Zak Jones, Riley Bonner, Seb Ross, Jacob Konstanty, Alex Witherden, Coby Burgiel, Josh Rotham, Alex Keath, Dominic Bendendo ...

Washed up, untried, or fringe players unless someone's seeing value that I'm not.

Of course, we could try to pull a contracted player ... but at greater cost generally.

I'd like to see us grab some experience to backfill Pez (presumably) and Cheese, but are we getting value, rather than trying our own players?

Can you think of any?

Getting Peatling and Finn's signatures would be top of my list. But I would stop short at being held to ransom by JP's manager which appears to be what is happening. I'm happy with the development of the list and what the coaching staff are able to get out of it. Midway through the season Snooze was really struggling and many wanted him dropped, a change of role and he relished it. I see no reason why we can't use what we have. Some slight tweaks to the structure could free up some guys. A few have suggested Ash goes on ball, it worked this year for Ed Richards. I think HH on Rayner showed he needs to play on smaller opponents, maybe gives a chance for Aleer to come in and pinch hit in the ruck. Another pre-season into Thomas, Leake, Gotthard, Jones, Fonti, Angwin, Wehr, Rowston, Fahey. I just can't see the value we are gonna get from the guys around 30 on decent contracts at other clubs. Unless it's a Snooze situation who wants to come to us, we are better off retaining who doesn't crave the bright lights and big crowds and keep hitting the draft

We should look to have a starting midfield of Daniels, Green and Callaghan next year… that would be dominant. Have Kelly, Cogs, Peatling through there as well.

This would allow for the inclusion of McMullin, who I think could be very good. I’m also keen to see Gothard get a go in the forward line next year.

I have been impressed with the continued development of Cadman.

If Taylor Adams misses another GF I would approach his management to see if he has any interest in joining the Giants. He would make our team better in 2025

So, I reckon EH has committed elsewhere (Suns presumably).

Any thoughts on Alex Witherden as a replacement for Harry Perryman? He is a limited footballer, for sure. Initially went well for Brisbane but pushed out by better players; went to West Coast and has played a decent number of matches there. His stats read pretty close to Pez though.

Riley Bonner is an alternative. Again, a limited footballer. Pushed out by Port previously, and now Saints, but if want to have an experienced backup while we try someone like Connor Stone as a Perryman replacement ...

Other possibilities would be Rory Atkins (Suns) and Jaxon Prior, both of whom I suggest would be a level below Witherden and Bonner.

I'm not particularly enamoured with these guys, but posters are suggesting we get experienced players ... but can't identify who they'd get.

When it comes to the midfield, there's even less options IMHO. Caleb Daniels and Seb Ross are a couple that ... I won't say "stand out", perhaps "are obvious" is better terminology.

If we're getting an ex-Lion I'd be all over Prior as depth. Witherden might hit the occasional highlight kick but he also has his fair share of clangers and I have more defensive presence at my age with no AFL experience and a bung knee. Prior is super reliable, actually a deceptively good kick, and can play tall in a pinch like he did this year. He just doesn't have any hurt factor but if we can kick him a multi year contract he might be interested. I can't see him breaking into our 23 though.

Witherden is horrendous. Can’t believe he is still on a list.

I have no doubts about the emerging talent and the great potential growth in it. I like leake in particular

But it’s those mid 20’s players in the peak of their careers that are the most consistent and that’s what we are floundering trying to discuss

Draft is deep apparently, maybe we just go there

No-one seems able to suggest names that they'd be happy to trade in, so I do think the draft will be our focus.

Presuming that we get end of first round picks for Pez & Cheese (ideally, we'd get band 1 for Pez, but I'll be conservative), the guys I like at this stage are:
  • Xavier Lindsay: outside mid/half back who looks capable of becoming a balanced mid in future, accurate kicker
  • Harrison Oliver: small defender who brings a balanced game, can defend and counterattack
  • Kayle Gerryn: big lump who looks like he can become a forward/ruck to completement
Still need to identify a KPD; I wasn't expecting to lose Derksen, but we'll need a solid replacement to develop given that Keeffe and Aleer are the only depth KPDs we'll have next year. Matt Whitlock is the obvious choice (which would knock out Gerryn from my desired list), however, I'm not 100% sold on him and need to consider options a little more.

We've always had stacks of high draft picks. Keeping as many of them as been a priority as opposed to bringing in from outside.

I would love him back

What about mature age options? Dom
Brew looks like he will be/should be on an afl list next year.

Could have immediate impact in the system which is appealing. Similar strengths to TG which is possibly an issue

We had alot if cap space to pay Mumford, Johnson, Shaw 9 or so years ago.
I think going the draft is ok, especially if we have players on 3 year contracts.
They won't play much in 2025 and maybe on 2026, but will probably play a fair bit in 2027 and will be less inclined to want to leave ( hopefully).
I wonder how ready Leake and Gothard will be next year. Super keen to train and play, filling the spots of Perryman, Cummings.

Would rather not

Wouldn't we select Logan Smith before Gerryn?
