I see it as just a balance of risk and reward when trying to maxmise value from a draft perspective, and we seem to lean towards the low risk side of that, which is just what I prefer. I've been involved at two clubs (admittedly in a not so influential capacity) and have seen the consequences of trying to maximise value biting them in the ass because they thought 'we'll get him lower'.

If we're operating with a smaller pool than other clubs, which we've admitted in the past we are, then we're ultimately going to be over paying on occasion in the eyes of others but using Angove as an example, if he's our 12th best player available and after that is our 20th, I'd rather just lock in the higher rated player rather than sick around trying to give ourselves a better hand in the future. I think the introduction of trading picks 2 years in advanced will be of advantage to us as well, gives us more flexibility in moving up if we get to next year and realise there's someone up high we really want, and likewise it'll make trading down easier
I have a feeling Sydney were a bit rocked when we took Hannaford, their room had nearly the worst vibe of the entire draft. Richmond taking those two lads early really shook everything up! He really needs to work hard on his tank but his vision is very impressive, looks an absolute bull.

This puts a new shine on the night :D

I've heard his 2km tt is an outlier and not a true indicator of his endurance.
I have no idea if that is accurate, but I hope so, that time trial is a concern.

Can someone explain what roles we'll most likely see our new draftees playing in? Seems like they all played all over the ground
Ultimately, Kingers will play them where he thinks they will most value add to the team, but based on their junior playing:
  • Harry Oliver - is the easiest to describe. He's a small/medium-sized defender. He's got a good balance of defensive skills, while still able to intercept, run and counter-attack, and is an effective kick. The role vacated by Harry Perryman would be an ideal slot for him - but I don't think he'll play there in 2025, he'll need time to settle in and develop through VFL. He would bring the defensive qualities that Pez had, but add a little more attacking ability. Conversely, if Conor Stone grabs Pez's spot, then you could see Oliver taking Lachie Whitfield's role in a few years' time, in which case he'd have much of Lachie's run and precision distribution, but a greater defensive capability.
  • Ollie Hannaford - was a bit of a bolter, due to playing different roles successfully in his U18 year. He started as a defensive half-back - so essentially a role similar to Harry Oliver (or Pez) but less intercept skills - but was moved forward with success, kicking bags of goals. Arguably, he's an improved Toby Bedford-style of player - plenty of defensive pressure, but kicks more goals. Finally, he was played as a midfielder, including in the grand final, and performed well there too. He had 24 disposals, 9 tackles, 15 contested possessions, 7 clearances, & 1 goal in that game. His 2km endurance trial at the State Combine is a worry, because it's very slow, indicating a poor tank (endurance). He's described as a utility because he can play multiple roles. I would guess we would like to develop him as a midfielder, but that will take time - but he's got great agility and a good leap, so he could end up a forward/mid or a genuine mid/forward. I would think we would start him as a small forward, hoping that he can pressure and kick goals. But we could also use him to pinch hit in the middle, or even if we need a lock-down defender on some jack-rabbit opposition small forward. Again, low likelihood of featuring in 2025.
  • Cody Angove - basically played as a half-forward in WA, so running up and back between the 50m lines plus kick a few goals. I suspect we will aim to develop him as a winger - think Tom Scully, or Lachie Whitfield in his earlier days. Very lightweight at present, so will need to bulk up to be able to contest the ball, but essentially we want him to sit outside the contest, get the footy and run forward and deliver to Hogan/Stringer/Cadman/Greene.
That's how I see them. Harry and Cody have videos up, so have a look at those.

From the members exclusive with Caruso;

Angove - Outside running WINGMAN

Hannaford - GIANTS player, suits the brand; competitive, aggressive, great athleticism

Oliver - Half back, no reason he can't be used on the wing or in other roles

Those finals revealed a lot. When we were fit enough to play footy our way, no team could go with us.
We simply couldn’t do it for four quarters.
Kingsley can push this over the preseason… whoever is fit enough to play our way for the longest will play.
We are well placed for KP players at the moment. With guys like Ricca, Derksen, Brown and Leek not getting a game.
Next year will see our gamestyle in its best version.

OK, are we going to pick anyone, or trade it out? Tom Gross, Hugh Boxshall, Jasper Alger among the names linked to GWS. Or will another club bid on Smith before the 9th pick of the night?

Jaques just got a comparison to "Isaac Cumming (GWS)". Full credit to the list management team - we got a compensation pick for him and used last night, and tonight we've now got him back too!!!

Pick 18 - GWS - Harrison Oliver (Sandringham Dragons/ VIC M)
Pick 39 - GWS - Jack Ough (GWV Rebels / VIC C)
Pick 68 - GWS - Cody Angove (Claremont/ WA)
Am I secretly a GWS recruiter?

OK, we elected not to match a bid on Cooper Bell. Off to Gold Coast.

Reasoning?

Obviously wanting to match Smith, but were we at least a little tempted? Don’t really like it when academy boys slip through our fingers.

If he hadn’t have been bid on, would we have looked at a rookie spot for him?

Basically, what’s the story.

If not bid, there would have been 1 live rookie spot. We could have chosen him, (our other academy kid) Joey Delana, a recycled player such as Ben Paton, or someone completely different to fill that spot.

If someone else didn't go for him, we could have also left him in the Academy team as an overager, and played him in VFL next year to develop, while putting someone else on the list.

Depends on how the GWS team see the Aleer/Derksen situation. I don't think we "needed" to rookie Bell, but you would think we would have closely considered him.

Clearly, though, we didn't want him at that price. (Given that the price was pretty low, it seems we just didn't want him on the main list.)
