No issue with Pittonet remaining on the list.
The duration of Young's deal seemed excessive for what he is, the knock on effect is that it can impact our flexibility but you're right.

Again, like Cottrell & Durdin, Young was given an extension in March last year until end of 2026. Why, when he had contract until the end of this year?

Think an internal review of list management is needed. Put a few heads together and nut out who is who in the zoo and what they bring to the table. Then Make a cut of the bottom how ever many and target best possible replacements through trade and drafting.

I know this is what list management department do but it needs a sharpened review imo.

We should be winning a flag or two over next few years.

It seems a bit weird. I think in all of these cases (plus Pitto) its a combination of:

- they are seemingly solid players who are entering their prime, unlikely to get much worse, and at a minimum can be depth/backups and fill out the VFL team. None will be older than about 28 when their deals end, I don't think - so they're never going to be completely useless.

- all have had moments where you think they could be about to really start to shine, and allowing them to get closer to contract expiry puts them on the radar of other clubs (unfortunately, all four would only need to make a tiny leap to suddenly become quite in demand if available, but also all unlikely to bring any real compensation if that did occur)

- it keeps them, and their managers happy, and greases the wheels a bit when other player deals need to be negotiated. Might as well build some bridges when we can

- the contract values are probably pretty low, and locking them in place keeps them low, while also leaving less moving parts when you start renegotiating other, more complex deals. eg: when we figure out what to do with TDK, it's nice to know what space is available, what backups are available.

- there's other players more likely to be delisted, and given where we are at (and the limited draft and trade capital we are likely to have) we don't really want to be turning over 8-10 list spots anyway.

- the coaches like them and what they offer, and see them bringing more to the table than they show in their stats so far.

Well written and fair points

Issue I still have is Austin made it clear that spots are at a “Premium”

Most agree we need a list “refresh”, have several glaring holes and lack depth. Likely anywhere between 6-10 changes

Whilst they may not cost much they cost us valuable spots

Yes, we can pay them out early but it still costs money and IMO is a poor strategy

The key for me is NONE are best 22 players. Extending them when their contracts aren’t even up yet makes no sense. Let them run to the end of term to prove they deserve another one. I just don’t get it

I’m told Marchbank Cuningham Martin won’t be offered new contracts

I assume Sam Durdin won’t for same reasons

IMO has to be question marks over Mirkov Akuei Lemmey M.Carroll Fantasia and even Moir

Gut feel is Jack Carroll could easily go back to WA

I think Carroll was always leaving for Perth at the end of this year. 16 surely was always being given to one of the Campo boys

He's fast, he's a good endurance runner. His ground level game is good and his footy IQ is good. He also wins a fair bit of the ball if given freedom. He also has all the attributes to drop back inside D50 and help the defence as a lose man. IMO he has all the attributes of the type of wingman we want.

He's not a strong spoiler. This limits who he can play on as a defender. The coach looks at him as a 192cm player and puts him on talls. That's not his go. He's a runner. He plays smaller than what he is. He doesn't particularly play very tall even thought he takes a few intercept marks. IMO he's a lot like Cripps in that he's a tall man but doesn't play tall, he plays smaller than what he is.

As a defender he should be played half back flank or possibly back pocket.

Maybe we would have taken these measures if we didn't have the injuries.

Williams forward was a tick and Cincotta has been ok.

Brett Ratten for all his criticism was a good coach at repositioning players and getting it right. I think we lack the brains in our coaching department. We have the brawn and all the rest but tactics and player talent identification isn't always that great.
hamil clarke russell hansen don't inspire me with confidence and modern game IQ. we need better

Have you heard whether we're looking to bolster the coaching? We'd have to look at Adam Simpson?

We just seem to get the dregs all the time.

I haven’t heard anything but I assume we will make some changes. Always need to freshen up a few spots to keep growing

Personally, I think Voss needs strong modern day tactical support and we need to keep improving our reserves

Every chance we now look to trade Owies. Unsigned and it doesn’t look like talks are progressing. If he isn’t kicking goals he isn’t doing much and the return for him should be a pick between 30 - 40 imo. Him not being at Carlton in 2025 seems a real possibility. Plus Marchbank, Cuningham and Martin to go.

I’d Trade our 2025 1st for a pick approx 18 this year. Trade our 2025 2nd for a pick approx 35.

That gives us picks:
15ish
18
33 to trade out
34 to trade out
35 to trade out

Having these 5 picks would give the club a great chance to cash in on 2 1st round picks and trade for 3 players.

Give me 1 Darcy Jones type with our 1 of our 1st round picks and the best key back with our 2nd 1st round pick. More scoring avenues with an electric and fast paced mid/fwd and a key back we are screaming out for to develop.

Picks 33, 34 and 35 and maybe more to GWS for Conor Stone and Max Geuzewski. Both imo would be great choices and improve our forward line and midfield.

Take both Campo boys

Take Adam Tomlinson as a DFA to pair with Weitering for a couple of years.

2025 could look like:
B: Newman Weitering Cowan
Hb: Saad Tomlinson McGovern
C: Acres Cripps Walsh
Hf: EHollands Harry JSOS
F: Motlop Charlie Williams
R: TDK Docherty Cerra
Int: Kemp Kennedy, Stone Fogarty
Sub: Hewett

Depth: pick 15, pick 18, Pittonet, OHollands, Gruzewski, Cottrell, Cincotta, Fantasia, Binns, CDurdin, Lemmey, Young, Monaghan, Wilson, Lord, Moir etc

To me, the above side looks extremely strong and more dynamic. And if one of the 1st round picks comes on quickly and adds some explosiveness in the midfield, maybe we look at playing early.

It’s subtle changes and nothing that will push the salary cap too far for much more reward as well as keeping an eye on our future.

Some good stuff Juddy

I hope we go to the draft with 1 or 2 first round picks

So much to play out. With trades up to 2 years ahead, FA, the Campo kids our LM staff will need to be on the ball

I'd consider hitting up SOS for a trade for Zaine Cordy (Owies/Binns/Carrol??). Not getting a consistent look-in at Saints is 27, 195cm tall, premiership player, has been coached by one of the best defensive coaches in the business for 2 seasons and could bring in some of that wisdom (although Hammillyou'd have hoped will have a bit of that intel).

Max Gawn will be 33 at the end of this year. I doubt the Cerra rumour is true but you would think with who they have on their list they would really want to challenge for a premiership before Gawn falls off a cliff.

I’d certainly entertain the Cerra trade but it would need to be for their 1st this year and I’d ask to have Tomlinson thrown in so he could pair with Weitering.

But it won’t happen
Pitto and Cerra for Trac and Tomlinson.
