I think there's another element that the previous poster hasn't recognised. Yes it is indeed a risk to sign TDK to this contract. But it's also a risk not to sign him to it. There's a very large possibility that if we don't and he continues to perform at a high level, he will receive massive offers to leave. He would also be more likely to consider those offers given we haven't committed to him. Risk goes both ways in these scenarios.

My angle is more that we seem to have 6-7 players on really large $$$ contracts and we have very little to show for it, in terms of on field success. I see this as being the reason we have been quiet on the player acquisition front the last two years.

I look at Brisbane, Collingwood and Geelong, the past 3 premiership winners and I don’t see them handing out deals like we have.

Other than Williams, our other players all deserved the deals they got and perform accordingly, they all had runs on the board, Tom compared to them seems like a much riskier play.

Now if our existing contracts weren’t tied to the TPP increases like it’s reported Essendons aren’t, then I’d feel a lot more comfortable.

I’ll be happy if Tom re signs, just a little nervous about the $$$, that’s all

Personally didnt think Martin or McGovern have performanced to their contract price. Not much of a point to be made except hype and market forces make us pay TDK the 8m.

I don't like the amount mch either but with Pitto the other option, I wouldnt want to see TDK leave either. So pay must and lump it!

Im hoping that Pitto is on a relatively small deal so we can treat them as a package deal..

I find it silly to compare us to what other clubs are doing as we are the only team in our situation... a large chunk of our salary cap (maybe even more than 1/2 our cap once the TDK deal drops) tied up in about 20% of our entire list. It is surely the most top heavy salary cap by a margin. For all the avid supercoach's out there, it is a pure guns'n'rookies approach.

Im not saying what we have done is right or wrong, but it is unique. I have upmost confidence in the club that it is by design and not accident, and they therefore are comfortable with where things are at. In fact, H, Charlie, Crippa, Walshy and Weiters could have got an additional 20% plus on the open market, essentially saving the club about 1mil/yr on market value just with this group

What length contract and $$ would you feel comfortable re-signing TDK for DD.

Of course.

Those deals were done a while ago but I doubt they're playing on the bare minimum either.
Geelong has quality, no doubt but I dont believe they have the same number of big ticket players either.
Owies & Kennedy would have been on the bare minimum.
The club would have the capacity to create space but I suspect that comes from moving on out of contract players rather than having space to burn.
We'll see soon enough.

Following tier, (give or take for a couple) likely Silvagni, Newman, E.Hollands, Hewett, Pittonet?! Haynes?, Hewett, Fogarty?,
Acres, Young? Acres probably got a little rise, E.Hollands maybe depending on the structure we inherited from Suns. Hard to see any of that group getting a rise other than the band creep from the salary cap..

Probable next tier includes Ollie Hollands, Motlop, Cottrell, Cowan, Kemp. Boyd, Cincotta, and Durdin would be on better than “starter” deals, but not huge money. A couple due a rise, but not yet in top earner territory. Only a couple a chance to be around “average” money.

Fantasia may have received a touch over starter money, but Moir, Lord, Binns, Wilson, O’Keeffe, Lemmey, Wilson, and the latest draft class Smith. Camporeale (x2), O’Farrell, Charleson, and Irish Monahan and Duffy would all be on starter money or incrementally fractionally more. Any SSP additions will be on basics.

We have a great many role players who will never be on real big money. There are a few who will be in line for increases at next contract negotiations, but I suspect anyone who tries to get above themselves will be shown the door.

We are hoping for the Hollands boys to elevate over the next couple of seasons, Jagga will likely be re negotiated before his initial three years is up to add a couple of years and spread the value over a longer period. Hopefully Moir, Motlop, Lord, Kemp, maybe Durdin and Cowan earn decent rises from meeting potential. Binns, Lemmey, Wilson and O’Keeffe will be slow burn more than likely.

Cotts, Boyd, Cincotta, Fogarty, Hewett, Pittonet, Silvagni, Young, even Acres, Saad, McGovern and Doc are looking at similar level or lesser contracts through their remaining careers, even decent reductions for some. I doubt we will overly entertaining bidding wars to retain players courted from elsewhere. We have some great role players and most are mirrored by youngsters coming through.

EH wouldn’t have any bearing on what GCFC was doing. Once you’re out of a club it’s a new contract and in EH’s case, on a best behaviour 1yr deal in 2024 that got him a further 2yrs tacked on until 2026.

He would be one we/he would be hopeful of solid improvement which would bolster his salary down the track.
