To be fair how many chances has he had at AFL level I'd back him in before I put my faith in Sam Day
On that theory, Overweight Johnny playing in my local team should be getting a go before McBean even because he hasn't had any chances at AFL level as opposed to McBean having four seasons on an AFL list without proving himself good enough.

A fit and firing Day is 100% ahead of Fort.

Henry Smith is the wildcard for me. If he takes a step forward, he'll get first crack.

Fit and firing OK I grant you, but at age 32 balance that against....

"Over the course of the past four seasons, Day hasn’t managed more than six senior appearances, kicking 10 goals across five AFL games this year."

Doesn't mean he wasn't fit the whole time, he was just playing VFL. In the last three seasons he played 12, 17 and 8 VFL games.

Tell us again how many goals McBean has kicked in his afl career?
Pick 33 in 2012 national draft so first season 2013. Played 5 AFL games in 2015, 2016
5 AFL games for 1 goal 4 behinds

SNAFL 133 games for 324 goals

Not saying he is what we need, but the guy can kick a goal and take a mark. Captain of Glenelg
Not sure on his ruck relief though

What's that saying you are only as good as your last game

Day will only be required for one year you'd think. Given Joe is/was an elite player that can't be replaced with a) little time and b) little draft capital to get anything done he is the best we can get.

In my opinion, recruiting a journeyman from a state league with very limited exposed form is just as much of a risk as a less durable player (albeit not too bad over the last couple of years) who has at least shown the ability/talent to perform at AFL level.

We innovated very well at times this year (often out of necessity due to unavailable personnel), so I am confident with a whole pre season to plan, we will have some new tricks up our sleeve that might mean a different forward set up to what we've seen before. Day might only play when match ups dictate a taller player is needed.

Looks made to order to me

Great so 1 goal then?

McBean isn't within cooee of AFL level and hasn't been for close to a decade. I'm sure he's enjoying his time in the SANFL.
Day has shown as recently as this year and indeed over the course of 13 years, that at worst he is a solid competitor at AFL level.
We were never going to get a perfect option to replace Joe, but I'm much more comfortable with the player that's shown a shitload more over the last one/two/five/ten years.

Obviously Day must be capable or we wouldn't be taking him.

Exactly my rationale for thinking Ryan would be ok.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we try all of the options as the year progresses.
Probably won’t nail down an option until late in the year.
