But he's a Restricted Free Agent, so they can match if they want to keep him. And their plan seems to be getting (and keeping) good veterans in to ensure Harley Reid doesn't decide to leave, which is the only logic I can attribute to them trading out of pick 3 in order to get Liam Baker. So I think they'd actually prefer to match him than get pick 2 next year. And they probably won't finish last anyway because Richmond will be worse.
The tiger supporters will be in a world of pain for the next two to three years until the new recruits develop and become AFL standard players. If they get their recruiting right their trajectory could be the same as the Lions, Hawks or GWS which bodes well for the future. If you want to bottom out this is the time to do it as we don’t know what concessions Tasmania will get and how long these concessions will be granted.

Allen is a free agent. Hypothetically, they finish last next year. Pick 2 for Allen would be a pretty bloody good result for them considering he is 26 next year and unlikely to be around for their next tilt at success. Particularly with the expansion of Tassy diluting a few drafts.

I don’t think it’s as unlikely as some might think
Good point. Whilst there aren't too many examples, like Johnny has said, WCE always a chance of matching.

I just don't see it being Allen given there are a lot of perks to being a one club, WCE captain in Perth into retirement. It would be a huge call to leave - I guess part of it depends on how far off he thinks the Eagles are from being competitive again.

Why would it be dependent on starce? If he wanted out and west coast wanted to keep both then they'd try to keep Allen

Currency. If Allen wants to come and Starce signs, it's unlikely we'll have adequate currency for Allen. If both want to move, I could see Starce + future first getting it done.

Just playing this scenario out.

If it actually gets to us officially lodging a Free Agent request for Allen, it’s doesn’t come down to what West Coast would prefer out of keeping Allen and top 5 pick, at this point Allen is out the door, with the contract value not being an issue. The equation for West Coast becomes if they can force more draft value by matching. Given our likely finishing positions, the unlikely nature of shaking an unknown player free late, a top 5 pick would close to the best they could achieve. The same could be said of he chooses Geelong or Sydney.

The smart play for both teams in these positions, would be to generate the high value asset via Free Agency, strike up a side deal where we downgrade our first for points / throw in any players they’ve had interested in for cheap. They effectively walk away with a top 5 pick and late first rounder, which would be about market rate for an uncontracted player.

I personally don’t see Allen moving just yet, and agree he’d be one of the last players they want to lose besides Harley.

If Starcevich was going to West Coast as a free agent, that would downgrade any compensation West Coast would receive if Allen was to leave.

We’d be better off trading Starcevich to West Coast for a token/lesser pick, so West Coast get full compensation for Allen, instead of them matching and forcing a trade.

I disagree. At that point West Coast can match and keep Allen, which is how RFA works. Unless he threatens to sit out indefinitely or do a weekly sh*t on the coach's desk or something. But Allen doesn't seem like that sort of player.

Why are we trading Starz ? He's clearly our best shutdown medium defender

I'd think that pick 2 could be appealing to them as FA compo.
theyd be nuts to match.

the reason to match is if you think you can force better compo out of the receiving club than what the formula would generate - something we are very unlikely to have.

the terms we'd offer allan would make it stupid to force him to stay on those same terms if he wanted out.

We are not trading him.

The concern is that he is a free agent next year (as was Rayner).

He has not put pen to paper yet, so a bit concerning he could exercise free agency. I will be very concerned if he hasn’t signed before R1.

The Lions will be trying very hard to retain him.

Long way to go yet
