I think Acres and Hewett have been great additions to the club.

Probably because they’ve just played and won a grand final I’m seeing Neale (dual brownlow medalist), Ah Chee, Daniher, Dunkley, Cameron as very high quality imports.

Saad, Newman, Elijah, Acres, and Hewett have been great additions. I’m sure when they play in a winning grand final I’ll be saying the same thing about them arrow.. :D
didn’t they get Ah Chee for free? He had a fantastic finals series

Just watched Haywad, Papley and Loman kick the first 4 goals of the grand final and a large section of our supporter base thinks players like Owies and Durdin can win you a premiership

if those players came with a rethink on our strategies, i'd be more confident. we transplant some of those players into our present system it won't improve us much.
with our ball movement we don't give ours a chance to operate in any sort of space, or they don't put themselves into any - maybe that's where the difference in quality is. like any team we look like a million bucks if we're sweeping it forward with our flankers getting involved and on the end of it. but we insist on bombing it to their intercept defenders on the wing. and if we win that contest, we bomb it into the forward line.
we don't even mongrel it in, we give our tall forwards every last opportunity even if it means kicking to a one-sided aerial contest. our small forwards are the last resort unless owies is in space.

Honestly yesterday’s flag win by Brisbane has made me optimistic.

IMO our 23 is v v similar to there’s

Andrews-weitering (the general down back)
Payne-Kemp (more athletic second talk)
Lester-McGovern (good using interceping veteran that is underrated)
Answerth - Boyd (good kick small defender, underrated)
McKenna-Saad (line breaking fast HB)
Wilmot- Newman (intercepting HB with pace)
Starcevich-cowan (hard nut lockdown defender)
Zorko-Doch (veteran line breaking HB-on field coach of sorts and sets up the play from behind with good ball use)

Omac-TDK (athletic ruckman)
Neale-Cripps (superstar inside clearance best)
Dunkley-Hewett (defensive mid that accumulates and can damage other way)
Ashcroft-Walsh (young gun accumulator that can damage)
McCluggage-Cerra (rolls Royce)
Fletcher-O. hollands (young outside winger good runner and covers ground)
Berry- acres (big bodies defensive winger that helps inside also)

Daniher-McKay (athletic tall that plays ruck and kicks bags)
Hipwood-Charlie (goal kicking tall that’s athletic and good on the ground-obvs Charlie is 100x better)
Morris-Sos (third tall marking option)
Cameron-Motlop (goal kicking small with pace)
Lohmann-moir (athletic X factor small that’s good overhead and in the air as well as on ground)
Bailey-Fogarty (mid-forward thst applies pressure and kicks goals)
Ah chee-Williams (goal kicking high half forward, good overhead and on ground and plays the link role and good ball use inside 50)
Rayner-Lij (mid forward that can impact centre as POD and can push forward and kick goals)

From a non bias persective think all players are on similar levels at their best.
Think injury free is the key

Need Kemp to put on size and not get pushed over so easily as our 2nd tall (Haynes helps if he doesn’t develop over this pre season)-this will also allow weiters to play more offensively and peel off his man line Andrews given his faith in Payne.

Doch will be huge to play that Zorko role as an on field ‘coach’

Walsh and cerra having injury free pre seasons is a must so Walsh can find his finals form from 23, same as cerra to be our rolls Royce inside, outside mid

Need Motlop to stay injury free to get back his 23 goal kicking form
Need moir to increase his tank massively this pre season, we all know his talent and X factor

Don’t want Houston
Haynes-2nd tall
Trade our F1 for 12
11-berry-comp for Motlop
12- taj Hotton-need a Rayner type forward mid that can burst throgh the mid and kick goals forward (replace Fogarty so Lij plays the ‘Bailey role’ and he takes the Rayner match winning high HF role)
Campo boys adds youth

Pitt, Haynes, durdin, Cottrell, binns, lord and cinc round out the 30 squad

We will be fine.

Don’t disagree. I do rate Williams if he stays injury free as that high HF link up player and Motlop did show signs as a goal kicker end of 23. That’s why we do need to recruit berry with 11 imo for depth. Parker as a FA could be a shout also. Moir is the wildcard has the raw talent and X factor no doubt if he build a tank there is no reason he can’t have a Pickett style 2nd year breakout a game changing small forward and obviously we all rate fog but if he can start kicking goals and kick 25-30 goals would be great. Also don’t underestimate SOS as a 3rd tall also. I think we just need to adopt the Brisbane fast, corridor style game plan and we will be right back up there.

As is the game style and the way they transition the ball and their F50 entries to mobile moving targets.

They have us covered for speed & skill on every line which compliments or maximises the way they play.

I am ecstatic at Sydney’s capitulation under the guidance of Rob Inness. There are considerable similarities between Sydney’s campaign and our own.

Both clubs hit the preseason hard and were up and about early only to slump to some chasm like troughs. Players were cooked. Varying levels and we sustained more significant injuries to key players. Both clubs regrouped to varying levels. Sydney got back on the rails largely due to a big return from Heeney after an enforced layoff, but ultimately had precious little left after a couple more taxing games.

Inness will be no stranger to the hazards of trying to stay up for seven months. It cannot be done unless a club engages is a heavy player rotation policy to ensure the health and fitness of the group come finals time. Clearly Brisbane and to a lesser degree Hawthorn (rotations and list research) and the Bulldogs (slow start and list research) timed their runs significantly better.

Freo is another example of a club running out of juice at the business end. Adelaide under a taskmaster fitness guru were flat for most of the season after promising so much in ‘23.

Hopefully Inness draws the parallels with Sydney’s campaign and convinces Vossy not to undertake another manic pre season. Our players should have a significantly heightened base off the last two campaigns. Surely we can take the time to drill and hone our skills and connectivity considerably more rather than brutal bring your mouth guard match sims dominating the pre season. A small group of players might benefit from a higher intensity of training, but the group as a whole should be working on connection more than contest. We have the contested beasts, let’s have them healthy enough to strut their stuff.

Yes we need to recruit well, but we have enough players with considerable upside to add to some stars who largely just need to stay healthy to make massive contributions. A deeper list of match ready role players should enable an increased rotational policy, if only someone can convince Vossy there are more layers that are not pure contest.

I have nothing against Houston, but I would rather concentrate on the draft to develop young, more dynamic talent, and to improve the top heavy salary spread of our list. We will struggle to fit all of the medium sized backs in as it is, I will be very annoyed if our trades consist of a sunset role for Haynes, when another option in his area in McGovern is nit too far from the same stage and a designated kicker well in to the back half of his career. We need to develop and consolidate Cowan, Boyd, Cincotta, Wilson and a repurposed Ollie, possibly Matt Carrol too, with Saad and Newman approaching their use by dates
there's only so much fitness staff can do when the head coach ignores them and picks players anyway.... With different rules for different players....

Swans have shit the bed picking unfit players in multiple finals - but a the same time leave mills in tears and out of the team. There'll be a bit of a fallout after this one.

There's a few swans important board members who have been looking for reasons to ship out some of the figjams (Heeney mainly....). Maybe him and Longmuir forcing that pick at the same.time as leaving the captain out ........ Who knows.......

Rob's great. Full confidence there.

Houston down to us & Roos says Morris at the end of this clip

The only players who would realistically choose to play at Norf are players who either:
1. Can't get a senior game in their current team, or
2. Chasing a pay packet

You don't go there if you're after success and you're in the peak of your career right now.

Aside from Saad the other three have had a fat paycheck and have under delivered most of the time.
l suspect Houston is coming back for a range of factors and $ won't be the key factor, otherwise would not bother.

Houston is only coming back to Melbourne if Port are agreeable.
As Silvagni made young Reid pay overs for a contracted Gibbs, Port are well entitled to do the same for a contracted Houston.
North are reportedly willing to offer him more money and Port overs in trade.
Dan would understand that if he wants to return to Melbourne, barring Austin overpaying, he nominates North and pockets the cash …

Port have no early picks so to acquire some of the players they have committed to, they will do a deal for Houston it just won't be two first rounders, no club is paying that for someone close to 28.
At best North will offer their future 1st, and we will trade our future 1st to Gold Coast and on trade to Port, marginal difference.
The attraction of playing for a big Melbourne club vs North with small crowds every week would also be a factor for any player.

Port won’t be trading their contracted dual AA for anything other than overs.
They simply don’t have too.
North are willing to accommodate this … I doubt Carlton are of the same mindset …

They have already committed to Lukosius on a 7 year deal without a 1st round pick, they will need one to do that deal.
A deal will get done, again he is nearing 28 and even North are not paying more than a F1st.

Port need approval from the AFL to trade future picks which will get approved according to Cal Twomey and it looks like a future first get the deal done for Lukosius

Pretty sure North’s future first will trump our future first.
Reckon Port will see it that way too …

Pretty sure Houston will nominate a club this week & again he is a good player but at close to 28 it would be crazy for either Carlton or North to overpay, personally would prefer we gain the extra pick from Suns and go to the draft but have a feeling Voss is keen to add Houston & hence asking Owies & Kennedy to look at their options our list needs some good fresh young talent & getting a few early picks would be a positive.

Port would have thought they could possibly get Cummings and Perryman via FA plus a pick for Houston. Overall a great net result, despite losing a gun player. A single mid 1st (pick 8-12) might have appeased Port in that situation

Now it's looking like just Houston for a pick. That's a net loss in the short term and they are contending now. You'd think that would increase the asking price for Houston. They don't need to offload him to get Lukosious so him nominating them is not really relevant.

Houston saying he is happy to stay doesn't help either. It just gives Port more leverage and makes it easier for them to walk away.

I'd be surprised if we aren't Houstons preffered destination but if we aren't able to meet the asking price it might just force him to pick North (or stay depending on how bad he wants the move).

Maybe Im overthinking it but thats my read of what could potentially be happening.

Where Perryman nominates, whether we can get pick 12 off goldcoast or buckle on 11, or whether that would even meet ports demands are all still question marks. So lots of factors that could be holding up a nom.

Houston won’t nominate a club that can’t satisfy Port.
The only way we can satisfy Port is to overpay.
Would/should we be happy with that … I doubt Austin will …
