Compare the pair…Dear v Moir both same age and very talented but dear can play a full game and in a finals game…

why is Moir still not ready for a full afl game?

Moir had a horrible hip injury that ruined his pre draft year, the main reason he slipped as far as our pick.

For mine, a two year (two trade period) strategy is needed, as we can't fix all our issues this season given our constraints. The players that we so desperately need may be available end of 2025.

Firstly, Noah Balta is the partner for Weitering that we need. Athletic, has mongrel, and will be 26 at time of signing. RFA in 2025, so Richmond have matching rights, but put a band 1 offer in front of him and I think Richmond take the Pick 2 compo (assuming they get the spoon).

Secondly, Zak Butters is the low-set, zippy mid that we lack. RFA in 2026, so a 'pre-agent' next year. Hinkley contract expires next season, so I think he gets the boot then. Hinkley's pet (Butters) may want a fresh start back in Vic. We must keep our 2025 1st rounder, as the start point for this trade.

Gresham (Orazio/Williams replacement) and Ison (long term Acres/Newman replacement) as NGA talents in 2025 is also a blessing in terms of drafting.

What does that mean for 2024 off-season?

Hit the draft, clear out salary where possible and trust the upcoming kids as players 23-34 on the list. Get the system and dynamic right, and then get the finishing pieces next year.

Invest heavily in small forwards and half forwards. Bargain pick ups of Garcia (WB) and Rosas (GC) is a start.

Use Owies, Pittonet, Kennedy to get 2nd rounders, package them up for Pick 12 from GC (points for Lombard) and go to Melbourne offering Cerra and Pick 12 for Pick 5 and a mid-2nd.

Motlop, Martin and Carroll shipped west for 4th rounders or late future picks.

Use the opened up cap for 2025 to pay TDK and Weiters and bring other payments forward to allow for acquisitions of Butters and Balta end of 2025.

Trainor and Berry in with Picks 5 and 11
Dattoli with our mid-2nd
Match bids for both Campos with our slew of 4ths.

Darcy Macpherson (delisted former GC small defender) and Will White (VFL) as rookies. Matt Duffy in as a Cat B.

Roll with a makeshift Haynes, Trainor or Young at KPD2, until 2026 when we can flick Haynes or McGovern for Balta. Trainor for me is McGovern's long term replacement at 3rd tall interceptor.

Dreaming, I know and its definitely risky - but lets be aggressive and proactive this off-season. I'm ok taking one small step back to set up our next 5 years.
Don’t mind the Balta option, as for Butters we can not afford to wait until 2026.. we need to be aiming to win it next year.

We need pace in our midfield, i hope we are at least speaking with Bailey Smith, the reports are that the offer at Geelong isn’t excessive and we would have more ability to grow his ‘brand’ than the Cats do, even with CottonOn. We will have a higher draft pick to satisfy dogs than the Dogs.

Pick 11 + Lewis Young for Smith.

Saad was average to poor for the majority of 2024, hopefully it was a blip and he gets confidence back in his body, is only 30.
I do have a theory on that. Saady is at his best when he has a license to create, run and carry. He is an attacking weapon,

who has been turned into a more defensive style, man on man defender. This has maybe, taken a lot of the enjoyment of

the game away from Adam. Ideally I would like to see Saady get freed up again and be told he can take the game on. He is

at his best imo, when he is going at full tilt, evading oppos players and delivering 50 metre bullets inside 50.

Try him in the guts

If he can have a strong pre season, I wouldn’t mind seeing Boyd tried as a midfield option. Not leg speed quick, but can pull the trigger with quick decision making and be a damaging distributor.
Might be worth a shot forward

Newman Weitering Young
Houston McGovern Saad
Acres Cripps OHollands
Boyd McKay Fogarty
Kemp Curnow Williams

TDK Walsh Cerra

Lord Cowan EHollands Hewett Moir (Berry)

Try him as a small forward

My biggest frustration with Saad and its probably more a knock on his teammates up the field than him personally is that he is no longer prepared to take risks. He gets the ball, runs around in circles and then chips it 15 to 20m. Again, probably an indictment on his teammates for not running to create and provide options leaving him with the choice of chipping it and us retaining possession or just bombing and likely turning it over. If that continues, getting Houston and any other elite users across half back isn't going to help us unless our game plan changes and players up the ground are prepared to work hard and give options. We'll simply knock the attacking flair out of them as well.

Trusts his teammates or his hammies?

Maybe he's improved out of sight since then, but Boyd's career was saved when he was moved to half back in the Dog's VFL side, was a certainty to be delisted until that and us subsequently picking him up. Has the attributes to be a good small forward but the history is worrying.

Geelong need an earlier pick to get Bailey Smith surely? Would we be tempted to deal ours?
With Tasmania’s draft concessions starting in 2026 and the assumption of improvement by us next year I don’t think we’ll entertain moving on this years first.

A lot of talent in this draft, and the ability to get a top liner prior to our f/s is incredibly valuable.
