2024 McClelland Trophy

Even you would be able to read our annual reports and understand this is correct SYB. If you’re struggling let me know.

Our President has gone through it and said it publicly as well.

Again, say it slowly with me - owed to the AFL.
I don’t actually care what your annual report says, you were dumb enough to suggest Hawthorn need to tin-rattle and you’ve got the most debt of any club in the comp.

I wish I could inject you straight into my veins.

I was so annoyed Melbourne won the trophy last year.

The MFC men's players got to share in prize money for going out in straight sets and half of those players brought a whole bunch of embarrassment and shame to its supporters. They didn't deserve deadly squat.

Probably allowed them to get the really good stuff

Premiership*. Singular.

Of course, any fan would rather the Premiership, but failing that, you have to be pretty chuffed picking up a million dollarydoos!

Amusing thing is, Hawks fans are content with Lions winning the Premiership, they fully deserved it. Yet Lions fans are salty as **** we won this. Stay classy guys.
Premierships**. Plural.

Ya know, the one we won a month ago, and the one we currently hold in the AFLW.

Why are we salty? The difference is the winner of the McClelland, criteria’s fault btw, doesn’t deserve to be called champion club. We are salty because we deserved to win champion club last year ahead of Melbourne. And we will be really dirty about it if the AFW lions win the premiership again this year. Imagine having both 2024 premierships and not winning champion club.

That is why we are salty and you aren’t.

No-one cares what you won last year, it's irrelevant to this conversation.

If you do win it again this year and do the double, you don't need this trophy, you will have two Premierships. For any normal person, that's more than anyone would care about.

Just tell you truth, you want the prize money. You don't give a **** about the status of the trophy.

Which they can't have because Hawthorn have won it

The McClelland trophy has always been about H&A performance. There's already a separate award and prize money for the best performed club in finals. So Brisbane have no claim to this.

The only other way this award could have been decided is by keeping the men's and women's results separate. In which case Sydney and North Melbourne should be the ones making an argument.

I'm not seeing the complaints, if the Lion's men team didn't have an awful H&A season, we'd have had it in the bag but we blew it.

Hawks deserved it. It's a good incentive to follow the AFLW and let's be real, a million bucks isn't going to change a lot in the grand scheme of these clubs who the AFL will never let fail in the modern era anyway.

Hence why the Lions are spending money instead of paying the AFL back because what is the AFL going to do lol.

Edit: The only gripe is that winning the AFL premiership is only an extra $200,000. Maybe time to up that prize money?

When was the last time it was increased?

I'm pretty sure its $1.2mil for the premiership

There is already award for:
AFLM Premier
AFLW Premier
AFLM minor premier
AFLW minor premier
Best overall performed H&A club

Missing- best overall performed club.

And there is already a seperate award for the best performed club in H&A. It’s called a minor premiership. Emphasis on MINOR. But no let’s not double up on the thing that matters/most valued, finals performance, instead let’s double down on the thing that doesn’t matter, home and away record.

Doesn’t make any sense

The actual club don't get much themselves anyway. From memory 3/4's of the money ends up being a bonus for the players and coaches outside the salary cap.
Would mean a bit for the AFLW players and coaches

We're in a non footy state and were in the bottom 4 for the first half of the last decade, it's not a shock that we needed extra financial help. Not to mention how poorly run we were at the time. The club is now fairly well run and turns a profit, has since 2019. Nearly every home game this year and last was sold out.

We owe the AFL money though as they helped us when we were battling. Can partly thank the QLD Gov for that as they charge Lions crazy rent for the Gabba (same with Suns for their home ground). Also, AFL is a "non profit" org and doesn't pay any tax. So they should be putting money back into the clubs as needed.

The McClelland has only being going for 70 years and it’s a H&A award, always has been.

Better luck next year I guess

It’s pretty bloody weird that all of a sudden there’s this massive outcry about something that’s always been this way.

When I played bush Footy, we had a champion club award that went to the side that had the best performed football and netball teams of the Home and Away season, the McClelland seems no different.

Sorry bad words on my part, by extra 200k I meant an extra 200k more than the McClelland Trophy.
