Agree. I'd prefer a well built 194-196cm kf who can stand his ground & take a mark in a contest than one of those scrawny stick figure 200cm forwards who constantly get pushed over in a marking contest.
Agree, also we've got Steene, Smit and potentially Condon for that role, we need a leading/mobile key forward, ideally good to great below their knees and who can compete and pressure both when the ball is in the air and on the ground.

Yes he was, but the narrative that we only drafted Jason to get Travis is complete bullshit. The club was heavily into Jason well before Travis played competitive football!!!

Maybe next time lead with that.
Something like and on a similar but different note remember that rumour about Jason, Cam being selected to get Travis....biggest myth in footy.

Rather then to a post about Travis being more highly rated then the pick 37 we took him with...

Yep, and they're all getting the opportunity to learn from & compete against 3 beasts in Checkers, McStay & Membrey.

Your quite right, but that myth was definitely a widespread narrative at the time (obvs from mug punters like me, not from the club). I think Jason was an excellent defender but when we took him the "whisper" was the little bro (Cam) was better and Trav the littlest was going to be a star.

We've been raving about Nick Daicos since he did that interview with his bro (what did he say, 'I'm only 8!"), so he knew it was too early even if we didn't.

You seem obsessed by size. 194-196cm is perfectly fine size for a key forward
Yes in the 1980’s when Plugger, Dunstall and Ablett were that size. The only one these days is Curnow who is successful at that height. If you haven’t been watching. 200cm + is a key and Curnow size is a mid.

Yep, and he has a great vertical jump which helps too. I was watching highlights of a 199cm prospect drafted last night (before our boys) and he moved ok, but looked to me like he could barely get off the ground when competing in the air.

Far better to have a mobile, competitive guy who can protect the drop zone and mitigate that mere inch or two of height he’s lacking with a good vertical jump.

Rubbish.
First of all Ablett was 185 and Dunstall 188

But Oscar Allen, Jake Waterman , Mihocek , McStay , Curnow , Georgiades, J Cameron , T Walker, Fogarty, Gunston , L McDonald , Zurhaar, J Amiss, Treacy , J Hogan etc all say hello
You can have your over rated Peter Wrights and Max Kings

Curnow, Cameron and hogan go alright. Far from giants. At our pick range not as if we were spoilt for choice

Don't rate Mihocek (192cm)? Tex Walker (194cm)?
Does Logan Morris (191cm) or Josh Treacy (195cm) look okay?
Personally I think the 200cm blokes are too big unless they have insane athleticism.

Mate, Travis was not 10 at the time of Jason's first year when the club first recruited him.
He was 13 and was being tracked by not only afl club land but also track watchers.

I never mentioned that old rumour in the post you are referencing.

your response was as such you agreed with Eddie which obviously is at odds with what I wrote....
I only posted about the drafting the other brothers to get Trav. That rumour came out when we took Cameron and could very well be true for Cameron. Jason was drafted off the back of a strong underage carnival and was a very worthy draftee. Absolutely no talk of Travis at the time. Jason has been added to the rumour since.

Walker, Riewoldt. Walter is much hyped at the same size.

He's an inch shorter than Tom Hawkins and can jump - going by draft testing.

Does that get him to the RL or back onto the senior list? I’d have thought senior list.

Yeah good question, you’re prob right there
Assuming cal just forgot to add hawks to the list

In principle I actually agree with you

There’s a bit of an irony in that the one time Hine (Leppa) actually bothered to recruit key position players, they’re both undersized by 2024 standards lol

Unless you’re very much a “specialist” forward or back, you kind of need to be 200cm plus

Unfortunately I’m not articulate enough to put into words what I mean by “specialist” forward but from a player example I’m referring to:

  • Fogarty
  • Waterman
  • Curnow
  • Sam Taylor
  • Jack Buckley

They’re those players that while being “sub-200cm”, they specialise in that role so don’t necessarily have the need to be above 200cm
