Just looking at Cal's late mail phantom... In both editions he had St Kilda taking a player, then bidding, then taking another player. Why wouldn't they do their bids on their first pick and make these teams pay the maximum?

Agree. They've got picks 7 & 8 so it wouldn’t make any difference to them to suck a few extra points out of an opponent. They’ll get who they want anyway and if they’re bidding on anyone with those picks it’ll be someone they’d be prepared to list anyway.

GC and Essendon will have enough points to match at that point and an earlier bid won't move the Saints 4th pick any higher.

All it will do is shift around the picks at the end of the draft a little bit and slightly adjust which teams get the late blokes who go on to succeed.

It doesn't take any value out of the back end of the draft when a team has to pay an extra late pick to match. The same players are still available and the other picks - not owned by the Saints - become slightly more valuable

There's no tactical reason for the Saints to do it.

With the discount, Pick 8 and the bombers can match with picks 28 and 31 with a pick in the 70’s coming back. Pick 7 and their pick 40 gets shuffled down the order to about 45 or 46 without a late pick coming back. Might even be enough to push it behind the Saints pick 47.

Pick 8 and GC have enough points to match and get a pick around 73 or 74 back. Pick 7 and they go into deficit in 2025 without trading in more points. That’ll impact them in 2025 when they’ll no doubt have more academy players coming through.

Much of that will depend on where Brisbane have to match a bid though. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thinking Think GIF by Rodney Dangerfield

Eventhough we are coming in late to the draft, it would be unbelievable if we found that diamond in the rough, and maybe this is the draft to that in.
It's good to read that opposition clubs think we're still going to pick up a very good player, despite our late picks.
I think the mixture of decent talls, KP and mid/forward types that will still be available at our picks makes it possible for us to get a player or players that can make an impact in the next 12 to 18 months....

I personally think we will focus on trying to combine 60 and 66 to move up the order rather than 52 and 55. Try to turn it into another top 50 pick.

It seems consensus now that Carlton won’t bid on Ashcroft at 3. What a rabble of a club they have become
I like to dig the bones in to Carlton just as much as the next, but the same thing happened with Daicos. All 18 clubs are spineless when it comes to bidding but they’ll all complain about access

Just a bit of fun and hypothetical.

Let’s say we didn't trade for Houston but still managed to get pick 13 for Noble. Who would you want to be drafted with that pick?

I'm intrigued to see who Port take with that pick. I'll also keep an eye on what happens to pick 11, which is now with Richmond and went to Freo via us from the Schultz trade

If we still had 13, I would trade down and target both the whitlock boys.

I assume in this scenario we still have our second rounder, which i would use to target a mid or medium defender with great speed/kicking.

Impressive work on calculations, but there will be live trading. Dons will most likely have traded out 28 and 31 before then - added some points and some Future picks and GC will have probably added some points too. Saints will most likely just read through their draft board and bid if they're at 1 rather than trying to be tactical as there's very little likelihood of a tactical gain for them.

If they're trading them for more points, it'll be before rather than after an Ashcroft bid.
The Lions are also likely to trade for points prior to Marshall pick too, our picks are likely to be worth more at that point as our later picks will slide in, whilst the Lion's pick 42/43 may slide out.
